Self service screens

Hello, I recently went to take out some books at the library and was surprised to see that in order to issue them, a user must input their password on a large touchscreen in full view of other people and security cameras etc (the screen being placed too high to shield onlookers using your body). I appreciate that for students this might not be a great issue but for staff it's akin to entering a PIN code at an ATM by using semaphore. Quite surprised that a university which runs a computer security and forensics degree programme (on which I am enrolled) that nobody has queried this. Just a thought.

Thank you for raising your concerns. This concern has been voiced before and I respect the conscientiousness of the students making these observations. This was tested before the kiosks were installed. The screens have been in operation in 4 Campuses for over 3 years, no PIN numbers have been copied after watching someone input their PIN. Although the hand movements are clearly visible correlating the movement to a letter or digit is nearly impossible when standing immediately behind someone. Its harder the further away they are standing. None of the CCTV cameras point at those screens (even if they did the film can only be accessed with a crime reference number). I am reassured that the screens do not present a security risk.

We said: Thank you for your positive comments its good to know when we get things right. We are limited
with what we can do with our current building footprint. When building change we take the opportunity
to redefine services. For example the new library in Luton which opens in July 2016, will have several
rooms which students can book for group work.

Tell Us Survey feedback - UCMK

You said:
More books for early years and education studies as we all need similar books at the same time which makes it
impossible to access what we need and I end up having to buy them.
Just frustration over books and that uni students that attend Bedford campus who live in MK can take books out
from our small campus library when theirs is much bigger and it is the one they attend.

We said: I am sorry there has been demand for similar books at similar times. As a degree student you are
expected to buy a few books for University yourself. Learning Resources does buy multiple copies of core
texts I would advise you to make use of the Reservation service to ensure you get
to borrow the core textsThe reservations service will bring you books from any Campus.

We operate a High Demands Holds monitoring service which helps us put interventions in if the list is longer than two people eg direct them to an electronic resources, buy another copy of the item (if its available) or ask an Academic Liaison Librarian to suggest an alternative title

Tell Us Survey Feedback - 24/7

I personally have enjoyed the 24 hours/7days opening of the Library. well done team. This has been really helpful.
Just a few, things, I will like to note;  TURNITIN I know that the team is working had to keep the turnitin link
functioning but, this is still an area that needs more attention in terms of its compatibility with internet explorer and
google chrome. Every student at home or in the library should be confident to submit through any engine
effectively. HAND SANITIZERS The library has hand sanitizer spots every where and with the fact that one
computer and its keyboard can be used by multiple users within a day, it will be nice to have them filled up,
because most of them are empty for health safety.  FOOD Most of the night reading students like me, struggle to
warm our food at night because, the entrance to where the student Union microwave is locked through the
Library, so we will have to go all the way to the other side. It will be very helpful to have a microwave in the
Library reception launch area.
I believe, this university is growing and has a great vision striving into perfection in its service delivery, because
I can see this effort, my own personal experience has been very satisfactory.

We said: I am very glad you able to make such good use of 24/7 opening. TURNITIN: this is administered by
the Learning Technology team and sometimes issues are not the fault of the University. We will keep you posted
with service tweets and updates on our Digital Library Blog
http://bedsdigital.blogspot.co.uk/
Hand sanitisers: this falls into the brief of our Facilities department and I am happy top pass your comments on
Food: For Health and Safety reasons the library will not be supplying a microwave for public use. There will be a
cafe on the ground floor of the new library opening in July 2016

Tell Us Survey Feedback - silent study

You said:
Have more rooms with bigger studying spaces in the silent library
Most of the small rooms in the silent library are almost always occupied.

We said: Silent provision is only available at Bedford, Luton and UCMK. Available space has the biggest
impact on whether more space can be made available. This is very restricted at the moment. The new
Luton Library (opening July 2016) there are silent rooms on levels  4, 5 & 6.
These will behind a glass wall away from the bookstock. This should make maintaining the
silence requirement a lot easier. In addition to the  silent study rooms there are quiet ICT rooms. I would
advise you to get into the habit of booking a PC for yourself in the Quiet ICT rooms on levels 4 and 5

Tell Us survey feedback - ejournals

You said:
Increase the number of journals and provide help and suppory on ABC rankings journals
Because I have found most of the resources I look for but not all

We said: Thank you for raising your concerns. University of Bedfordshire offers:
  • 80,000+ ejournals
  • 1,200+ print journals
through Learning Resources. They are bought after consultations with academics to ensure that they meet
the needs of your studies. I would hope that there would be plenty of resources for you to choose from. If
the print journals occasionally get out of order I do apologise. Staff do try to keep the stock in good
alphabetical order
I also think you may need to consider what search terms you are using and
whether  they really are as specific as you imagine

  • You might not be searching the right resource, check the Databases for my subject links on the

Tell Us survey feedback - Aylesbury Campus

You said:
The quiet area in Oxford House is on a main corridor used by students to access classrooms & is actually one of the noisiest parts of the library! You need a separate pc room where students can study in peace & quiet. Surly this is the whole point of a library?  Pad support seems to only be available at Oxford house on a mon - we are usually in Luton or Butterfield for lectures on these days?  Opening times need to be revised. Oxford house is mainly used by the healthcare students. We have to work a variety of shifts, yet the library is only open office hours and closed at weekends. This means we cannot study in the library around our shift patterns. I'm sorry but that really doesn't make sense which ever way you look at it!

We said: Thank you for raising your concerns. In the current building Learning Resources is very restricted in what services can be made available. We do our best with what's available. Ww are exploring the possibility of whether we can provide in sessonal targeted delivery for students groups with placement commitments.

Tell Us survey feedback - Study environment

You said:
Discipline and always keep updating the system .
I feel so because information is a continuous process.

We said: All Learning Resources resources are updated at regular intervals. Learning Resources provides
learning environments and resources for the adult University community. Virtually every course of study has an
element of group work that requires appropriate space for students to work together. Each student of the
University has their own learning style. This style may change as an individual progresses through academia or
according to the assignment in hand. Some people like to work in noisy environments. Some people need to talk
as part of their learning style. As a University of adults self-monitoring is a part of that progression. One person's
idea of quiet or silent is quite different to another. Setting a standard of behaviour when applied across 200
individuals the environment is not going to be quiet.
We are able to offer Silent Study floors: levels 2 & 3 of Luton's LRC are designated Silent Study floors at
the request of the student population. Provision is made for group and social learning elsewhere in the LRC so
there is an expectation for students to choose their preferred study environment and abide by the requirements.
The Silent floors are monitored electronically and this is backed up by staff patrols - during staffed hours. Any
student caught breaking the Silence requirement is allowed one warning after that Library sanctions come into
effect.

Tell Us survey feedback - Butterfield

You said:

the books were good for my needs, but its just i couldnt access them at throughout the week as it closes when
i finish placement.
We said: Thank you for your comments we do recognise that Butterfield does not have the space or

You said:
Make printing free or as subsidised as possible to students.
Because the services and supports are excellent and if there is any problems the staff are very good in attending
to/solving it.

We said: The reprographics team sets up the printers and provides the service
costs for the University. Learning Resources houses most of the student printing
in the University and help the customer facing delivery of this service. The University's
Freshers bursary helps with printing costs for the majority of our undergraduate students.
Our printing costs compare very favourably with peer institutions and the cost of
colour printing is going down from September!

Tell Us survey feedback - PCs

You said:
Not enough PCs in silent areas. Would be very happy to use my own laptop in silent areas but there are no plug sockets (Level 3 along the window near psychology section). I hope the new library will have better infrastructure in this respect. The PC silent area on level 3 is ridiculously hot. Library PCs should have subject specific programs installed - NVivo for example. As the library is a 24 hour service, there should be suitable refreshment facilities, eg Kettle/microwave/toaster. Not everyone wants sugary stuff out of the machines. It would be good if first come/first served car parking was available for night time library use as I don't feel safe parking off campus and walking in at night.

We said: Thank you for raising your concerns. Silent study space is not silent with the clatter of keyboards. Even softtouch keyboard create some noise. Learning Resources has tried to meet the needs for silence and laptop/PC access with current provision. There are a few PC on levels 2 & 3 which may be booked and power points where laptops may be plugged in.
July 2016: When the new library opens in July 2016 there will be silent study rooms on each floor. In addition to the silent study rooms there are quiet ICT rooms. I would advise you to get into the habit of booking a PC for yourself in the Quiet ICT rooms on levels 4 and 5
Nvivo is on bookable student PCs and all level 1 PCs at Luton
There will be a cafe space on the ground floor in the new library for food and drink. Students own equipment may not be plugged in anywhere in Learning Resources. Parking is outside my remit so I am sorry I cannot advise on this except to say that here is no on Campus parking available.

Tell Us Survey feedback - postgraduate study space

You said:
I suggest specifying silent area for just postgraduate students. undergraduate can't access it.
some research centres assign rooms for their students in the library while others don't. I am from CRELLA
and I don't have a specific place in luton to study in like other institutes. This isn't fair.

We said: Thank you for your suggestions. University of Bedfordshire postgraduates and researchers have
access to the Post Graduate Centre and may use the resources there. The ethos of University of
Bedfordshire Learning Resources and Service Excellence access policy is equity of access. The University's
LRCs and libraries are open to all. This offers the fairest access. No research centres have assigned rooms
in the Learning Resources.
When the new library opens in July 2016 there will be silent study rooms on each floor. In addition to the
silent study rooms there are quiet ICT rooms. I would advise you to get into the habit of booking a PC

Tell Us Survey feedback - Putteridge Bury

You said:
As I'm at Putteridgebury, I would like to see a better resource placed there.
The library at Putteridgebury has quite dated material. Reserving books can be a lengthy ordeal.

We said:  Thank you for raising your concerns. In discussion with your Faculty it was established that the majority
of resources for your course were available electronically so a minimal print collection was all that was required.
The print collection at Putteridge has to be a self service facility but the full range of resources available throughout
the University's collection is available via the reservation service. Some high demand items with long
waiting lists may make the reservations process longer than desired but we have introduced a range of mediation
options such as directing student to an electronic version or even buying additional copies to ameliorate waiting
lists to help speed reservations up.

Tell Us Survey feedback - search strategies

Improve the search engine in specific topics. Sometimes I search for meterials and the ones that are unrelated
pops up. For example, searching for a Business related article and a Medical article pops up especially on

So far so good. At the end of my search, I am able to find materials / articles that are helpful, however, with
some difficulties and several hours spent on the search. Overall: Satisfied.

My best advice is to try again and keep an eye on our Digital Library blog for updates

Enforcing the Law on the use of the Silent area
I am able to study effectively

We said: Thank you for bringing your concerns to my attention. In Luton's current building in
order to have any silent working it has to be on a floor with book stock. Unfortunately
this brings with it some noise. We do our best to manage this but it doesn't always work.
In the new library (opening in L Block July 2016) there are silent room on levels  4, 5 & 6.
These will behind a glass wall away from the bookstock. This should make maintaining the
silence requirement a lot easier..

Keep the noise level down.
Its not a bad service. There's ample access to books and journals and accessible from home.
 Even support.

We said: Thank you for your kind words. Luton LRC the silent floors are on levels 2 &3
are patrolled by staff and are electronically monitored for noise. if you
chose to work in
other areas of the LRC then noise cancelling headphones are your best option.

You said: I think we need a real silent area. A silent area without displaying books as most of us need to talk
when choosing books. Thank you
Helpful people at the library and variable resources such as books, computers and journals .

You said: The noise levels and groups which use the 1st floor as somewhere to watch football or just have a social. This year there has been two groups which almost of a daily basis come in and sit in a circle taking up a whole row or two of computers and do nothing to talk socially and loudly. I've complained previously and got the response that if I want silence I should go the second floor. However I stand by the fact this was an unsatisfactory response. If there is team work or you quietly wish to work in pairs and small groups, you will be told not to talk at all on the 2nd floor, but on the 1st or 3rd floor you have to put up with loud noisey people. Then you have the hub which is usually quieter but then you don't have easy access to the books. The staff and security need to regulate the noise. It's a learning area which is treated like a canteen of noisey people which ruin the flow and standard of work of the majority of the other library users. Frustratingly it's the same 15-20 people who do it day in day out. It could be easily fixed if the library staff would be willing to stand up to them for the sake of others. I've complained about this main times but have been shrugged off.

Luton Study environment

Due to all of my previous comments about noise levels and despite previous complaints I've being given
unworkable 'solutions' which I could do instead of dealing with people who treat the library like the hub or
canteen.  Further, there's a small flaw in the system in which where a specific book is brought for someone to
complete there dissertation.. Why would it go onto the system straight away for other users to then reserve
when the book was specifics for someone work and crucial to there work? I've had to incur a fine and not
been able to take books out because the above has happened to me. I'd had the book 6 days before someone
reserved what was the only book relevant to the niche area my dissertation was on. What an unsatisfactory
service on top of the distractions allowed on floors 1 and 3.
Further, upon having a file go corrupt on my memory stick I sought the help from the staff however the attitude
I got was I should have used the u drive which is secure and accessible from home. I was told it was in the
handbook (which I didn't receive) and that it was signposted over the library (which I'm yet to see). When I
went to get the code to access the u drive, two members had to check whether they were supposed to give it
out to students and further specifically said they do not advertise the use of the u drive. When I was in a panic
about losing work I was made out to have made a stupid decision because I should have known of other
securer ways to transport my work but two other members contradicted all of that. Very disappointing treatment..

Noise: the silent floors are levels 2 & 3 are patrolled by staff and are electronically monitored for noise. if you

Book purchase: I am not aware of a book being bought specifically for you so I do not know the details I would
say that any item bought for Learning Resources is for anyone in the University community and everyone has
equal access to the resources. if a book is reserved then it has to go to that person and not be renewed
Handbook: our handbook is available from level 1 of the LRC from Setember until about April - you just
need to pick one up.  Its also available on line
http://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/guides/handbooks/library-handbook-201415
Corrupt file: staff gave you specific advice about using your U drive it wasn't an attitude problem. i agree that as
you subsequently had problems accessing the code this wasn't particularly helpful. They could've suggested that
you purchase a new USB but I imagine that they wanted to save you money

Digital library Access

I have today been trying to access journals and ebooks via both the university library website and the journal websites directly using my University log in. This was not an issue earlier in the week when I was able to do so, however every site I have tried today gives me the following error when I either click through to enter my Bedfordshire Uni details or when I click on the link in the library website of the ebook...

'Unable to complete request at this time. (Request/Response was from an untrusted provider-5909BCF4EFB37AEE)'

I have tried googling this end to see ifthere is a solution but have drawn a blank. I am using the same computer I used earlier in the week (with no issues) and have also tried a different computer in case that was the issue

Do you have any ideas as to what could be the cause?

I am sorry that you have been experiencing problems. There doesn’t appear to be anything wrong with your library account I don’t know what problem you particularly experienced but I know there were some problems accessing the digital library last week which were reported for investigation last week and white boarded on Campus

I am copying our Library Technical team into this email to see if they have further advice but currently I can only advise please try again

Luton LRC

I currently hold a learning resource card which expires 16th Oct 2016. I was wondering if I can still use the university library resources

All External Customers are prohibited from using Luton LRC until August 14th due to University exams and our relocation. I apologise for the inconvenience but this is an extremely rare occurrence.
