Bedford Campus - group study room

 You said

I hope you are well.

I am emailing to ask if you could please open the teaching room for students. I understand that it has been closed as a result of some students misusing the premises, however it is not fair that other lose the opportunity to use the room. The Teaching room has a projector and it is really good for practicing presentation and public speaking. After all the Library is there to help students advance on their studies and future job prospects and I believe all available rooms/ materials should be utilised to achieve this goal.

Thank you for your enquiry. The teaching practice room on level 3 of Bedford Campus library is closed for study purposes. The library cannot offer group study facilities at this time. You may ask at the customer service desk on the ground floor to collect up any materials you may need.

We initially tried to keep the Teaching Practice room open reliant on students to only enter if the room was not in use ie one at a time.  Unfortunately, this proved impractical due to student behaviour.  There are not enough staff on site to ensure the room remains a safe environment and in keeping with all group rooms in the libraries it will remain closed for the time being.

However, I am able to offer a solution.  Students are able to book rooms in the Gateway and other areas on campus for this type of activity.  Please approach a member of academic staff who will book a room for you via the timetabling team.

Renewals

 You said

I have four books I have taken out and three of them have been renewed 30 times, and wanted to ask is it okay that my books have been renewed automatically thirty times, as I am worried they have been renewed automatically a lot, please can you let me know as I have not received an email saying my books are overdue, thank you.

We said

Thank you for your email. The University is running automatic renewals until the lockdown restrictions are lifted. Once they are lifted advice on returning print items to the library will be available on our web site.

External customers

 You said

I used to be an external library member but cannot locate card (expired in any case)

Please can you confirm how I can re obtain membership - its just to use and study for professional exams. I've seen there are reduced hours for covid.

We said

Thank you for your enquiry. University of Bedfordshire is not currently offering external library memberships due to pandemic restrictions

Opening Hours

 You said

I am writing to seek for possible extension of library opening hours especially on weekdays.

Currently the library opens till 8pm on weekdays. This is not conducive and inclusive as some students are on placement till 8pm. This makes it impossible to access the library during such hours.

Also some students with kids find it hard to study at home and during the day because of childcare, so night studies becomes more convenient.

Third year students currently working on their final year project needs longer time of study and access to access to library will go a long away.

Prior to pandemic, library is open 24/7 using I'D access and library staff stays till 8pm. I wonder if some students like third year students can be given longer access to library or if the library can return to previous opening time especially with exams round the corner.

Please, I will appreciate if can give some thoughts into and consider the request.

We Said

Many thanks for your enquiry. I am sympathetic to your request and can reassure you that library opening hours are constantly under review. The University is mindful of the advice issued by government and the safety of the University community.

As the pandemic is not over there are many restrictions still in place. These hopefully, will change at each stage of the government’s Roadmap. Please monitor the opening hours on offer weekly after Easter to see if any changes may be made.

Loan query

 You said

I borrowed the below book before Christmas and I returned it along with many others in January. Basically I need the book again so I found it, went to reserve it, but can't as its saying the book is still out on loan to me. I returned this book to the automatic returns point on the ground floor of the library building. Is it possible its still in the automatic returns waiting to be checked back in?. Is there any way you can find the book and check it back out to me and I will collect? I'd appreciate it. Many thanks.

Further to your enquiry I have just asked for an on campus check the book is in the reservation room for you, along with two other holds.

Does that help?

Reservations

 You said

I have reserved 5 books to collect from Bedford library however only two have arrived so far and I am aware I have a deadline to collect them. I am driving two hours each way so I need to be sure all 5 books are there to collect before leaving as that is not a journey I want to do twice. Can there be an extension made on the two books which are currently in allowing me to collect all at the same time. 4

I also wondered if you had an update on the other three books as they were all listed as available so thought it should be transported within 3 days and the reservations were made last Thursday.

Please advise on whether there will be an extension on collection time for the first two books and a date when the other books will arrive in bedford.

Thank you in advance for you quick response.

We said

Thank you for your email. I am happy to accommodate your request and will advise the Bedford team to extend the collect time on the two books which are ready to collect until the end of March. Specifically 26.3.21

Online Library

You said

I’m not sure if I have to message here or Sid but I am having trouble signing into the online library, when I put in my ID number and password it tells me that the information I submitted was invalid and was wondering if you could help.

We said

Thank you for your enquiry. I am sorry you are having problems logging onto the library catalogue. May I check is this your only University account you are having problems with? You use the same username and password to log onto the library as BREO (for instance)?

There is nothing wrong with your library account which would stop you logging on.

If you continue to have issues with logging into the library catalogue or Discover please first try a different browser such as Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox. Do  not use Chrome. You must clear the cache and go directly to DISCOVER or the catalogue and not via BREO advice on Facebook link.

Please follow the following link for guidance on how to clear the cache. http://fb.me/7HXfYnuLk

Additionally please check if the “auto fill” option is turned on in the browser. If it is on please switch this off and then try to access. This should then work. Auto fill can be found in

the settings.
