Please Note: you can only install the free version of Office on Windows 7 or later PCs. You cannot install the free version of Office on XP or Vista. See Microsoft's advice on system requirements for the new Office suite. Also note that Office will cease to work after a short 'grace' period if you leave the University.

Using databases

I am writing a dissertation now (master level) and I need to collect data from Reuters database for a case study. Can you tell me please, if we have access to this database. If not, can I ask for a request for this site.

Thank you for your enquiry. As Reuters is a database what is it you specifically require?

The University of Bedfordshire does not subscribe to Reuters but has access to Newsbank and UK Press Online?

Please let me know if  this helps?

Luton Library - lift voice

During night study I usually experience noise from the elevator whenever it is in use. Would really appreciate if something could be done about it.

Thank you for raising your concerns. I appreciate that as the building empties ambient noises become more dominant and intrusive. Luton Campus Library has voice announcer to alert users to opening and closing doors, whether the lift is going up or down and what floor the lift has arrived at. The reason for this primarily is to assist customers who are partially sighted or out of eye line for written information.

I believe the sound level is pre-set and I will check to see if it can be turned down slightly but I imagine they are set at levels to assist everyone in the lift so we may not be able to adjust this.

May I suggest that you use ear buds or headphones to reduce the irritation?

Butterfield LRC

.... The limited opening hours of the LRC and limited computers can be problematic.
However, I cannot fault the staff, and the responsiveness of the university team as a whole.

Thank you for your enquiry. The Butterfield Campus opening hours reflect the teaching patterns at that site. Unfortunately the number of PCs is restricted by the available space. Learning Resources and Service Excellence encourage all students and staff to use the new Luton Library on the Luton Campus near the Vicarage street  car park and University bus drop off. The Luton Library is open 24/7 and has a large range of study spaces. There are plenty of PCs and MACs. New services are coming on line in the next few weeks and will be of benefit to the whole University.

PC lock out

I suggest pc time lock out be stopped, especially when students use/need computers for long hours. It can be very frustrating having to reopen all various windous once pcs are timed out.

Thank you for raising your concern. The only reason the screen "locks out" is if the mouse or arrow keys have been in active for over 10 mins. If you remember to nudge the mouse you should avoid any lock outs. This facility is specifically to protect your work and your print credits so we won't be getting rid of it.

SPSS

My version of SPSS 21 for Mac has expired I could not find the new code on Irweb.

Could you help me in this, please?

Thank you for your enquiry. I am sorry you could not find our advice on LRWeb.
We now support SPSS 23 for MACs please follow this link and follow the instructions

External Customers

I'm not a student but would like to use the library space to study and review management journals.

I am currently studying towards a HR qualification - Advanced Certificate in Human Resource Management.

I have read your page on external customers but im not sure which would apply to my situation.

Thank you for your enquiry

It depends whether you wish to borrow books or not - if not a Reference membership at £30 per year would be your best choice

Thanks
