Tell Us Library Satisfaction Survey 2018: Bookable rooms

the quite floors especially the 5th and 6th floors. booking system of the computer room.
more cubical glass rooms for 4-6 students on the top floors.
the library block is separate and pin drop silence in the top floors.
more computers on the silence floors
it has supported me very well from the librarians to the online materials available helped me a lot during my desertation.

Thank you for passing on your appreciation. There are no computer rooms available to book. The teaching rooms on level 1 are available on a drop in basis between staff bookings. Staff - as I am sure you understand - must take priority.
There is no capacity to introduce further group study rooms in the design of the building. The top floors are not silent but there are silent study rooms on levels 4, 5 & 6. There should be silence in these rooms and if there isn't you may report it in person to the Customer Service Desk on level 1 or email your concerns to libraryideas@beds.ac.uk
There are limited PCs in the silent rooms to help maintain the silence. Keyboards are noisy so laptops for loan are provided to use in the silent study rooms

Tell Us Library Satisfaction Survey 2018: Software

It's big enough for all students to use
Make sure that all the computes are working and that the chairs cruelly off back support and aren't just flimsy
Get the right software on the system for every student to use for there course
It works for me about 70% of the time as I need specialist software to do my course (Computer Science)

The University took a lot of care in choosing the furniture for the new library. If any of the furniture doesn't offer back support or appears flimsy please bring the specific piece to staff's attention as it would appear to be faulty.

If you require software for your course which isn't provided by your department and isn't in the library software range please let me have the details so that we can investigate whether it can be installed on public facing PCs.

Tell Us Library Satisfaction Survey 2018: Vending

Sometimes I stay until very late at the library (nights) and there is no place where to drink or eat something. I think it would be nice to have a machine with hot and cold drinks and something to eat.
I like to read a lot, so even if I don´t have to study I still go to the library. It´s one of my favorite places at the university. I feel confortable and welcome there, be it because of the staff, the space itself or the resorces I have access to while I´m there. I would only make one remark, besides what I wrote before about drinks and food during the night: the resorces (mostly books) in my subject area - Performing Arts, dance -  are quite old and most of the times I have to order books from the National Library or from Luton Campus (where most of the up to date books on the subject seem to be, which is odd, once there are several courses on Performing Arts at the Bedford Campus). I think the library needs to update the spoils they have on this subject, to refresh it and buy new and recent books, including the more technical areas as scenography, light and sound. It´s very important for the students to read up to date literature on the subject they are studying!

We tried vending machines in the recent past and they were not used very much. None the less we are giving this another try and vending machines should be in place in the near future.

Tell Us Library Satisfaction Survey 2018: DISCOVER

It is easy to find what you need, modern and clean. It feels safe and has all I need to study.
Sometimes other students can be noisy. They can be more in a social mindset than a studying one and this can be distracting. However that is not he fault of the library staff. I now avoid Saturday  and visit earlier in the morning...six'ish.
The only complaint I have...may not have ticked the right boxes to convey this, is that on Discover,  approximately half of the peer reviewed journals that appear in a search cannot be accessed from the link provided. I have spoken to lecturers about this and it seems it is a common problem with no resolution? All of my peers have the same problem. If a journal is showing as available in my opinion it should be available, especially as I am told that the University has paid these outside agencies for access. Considering stuent fees we should be able to access them. Has this affected my studies?...yes, particularly with my last assignment. I have not found this problem with searches for books, only on Discover.
The actual library is pleasant, it would be nice to have more books, though. Staff are knowledegable and friendly. The only thing I am disappointed in, considering our fees is not being able to access what I need on Discover.

The University took a lot of care in choosing the furniture for the new library and getting our architects to design a space to offer a variety of study environments. I am glad the space supports your learning.

The silent study rooms are patrolled and any noise (reported in person or by text) is investigated to maintain the environment. Penalties are in place for those who disregard these rules. Please note the group study rooms are NOT for silent study. They are in fact the complete opposite as they are designed to be used for group work which involves conversation and discussion.

DISCOVER has encountered a number of issues on a national scale (ie not specific to the University of Bedfordshire) in the past few months. We have endeavoured to minimise the impact but sympathise with your frustration.

Everyone's personal learning style is different and may conflict with everyone else's. Fortunately Luton Campus Library has a full range of study environments to - hopefully - suit all our students.

Be aware that some floors are specifically zoned for social study. Inevitably these floors are going to be noisy.

I would strongly advise you  study on level 4, 5 or 6 which would suit you better. If you still find the open areas on these floors too noisy you can choose to study in the silent study rooms which are monitored.

The furniture is modern and everything is usually clean.I said 'usually ' because when I started the uni, in 2016, was more  clean than now.I don't know why, but seems that lately, the carpets are more dirty and some people don't clean after themselves when they use a desk, resulting in it being messy and not pleasant to work at.
Being more clean and people respecting each other, as well as more  quiet rooms.
More available  books, as for my course (Biomedical Science) I cannot find all the things that I want.
There are some areas which can be improved, as mentioned above.

The library has a cleaning programme to maintain the study environment and it has a code of conduct to guide customers as to what is regarded as acceptable behaviours.

This is a  joint effort to keep the library in excellent condition. Unfortunately there are a few customers who do not take these requirements seriously. There are sanctions in place where necessary

Tell Us Library Satisfaction Survey 2018: Appreciation

The library at Luton Campus has sufficient workspace with or without computers which is essential for studying.  I am fascinated by the available discussion rooms that can be booked. It does help for group preparations.
The library tends to be so noisy especially on peak hours. unnecessary noise in pc areas it becomes like a cafe.  I understand there are discussion booths set up but I hope noise can be minimized. It can be so distracting at times.I hope the University Library can provide the students a TURNITIN like services or an equivalent to be able to check the assessment essays for possible unintentional plagiarism or grammatical errors before submission.
The Luton Campus Library is spacious, there is sufficient workspace for individuals as well as groups. Moreover, the staffs are approachable and helpful. The facilities are up to date to latest technologies and the website links are beneficial.  Overall, it is a great privilege to all UOB students.

its contemporary design
lighting, temperature-air conditioning doesn't work most of the times,-more fresh air,
More books, working PC, printers and scanners, sources to be available on internet
equipment doesn't work or is very slow, not enough books and recourses

Thank you for your feedback. The Luton Library design like a lot of contemporary buildings, is based on a sealed building with a responsive building environment management system. It has no externally opening windows. The environment is carefully monitored and generally works well. Extremes in temperature, particularly those we have experienced recently, have led to a few occasions when our building management system had a few problems. Staff will keep records of temperatures to monitor system effectiveness and where appropriate the problem is put on the help desk.

Tell Us Library Satisfaction Survey 2018: Alexon House

Better lighting and temperature control
Quieter lift announcements
I study art at Alexon. The library is too far away (15 mins) to visit often. We only go there when we can't avoid it. This is particularly detrimental to our studies in
Inaccessibility of periodicals. See above.   I have not spoken to our Head of School about this but you might like to get his views before responding.

Thank you for your feedback. You raise some interesting points on accessing and using resources.  Having spoken to the Head of Department, collectively we are going to explore how the physical distance between the library and Alexon House can be softened.  Ideas to explore include: creating reading space at Alexon House and exhibition space at the library.

Tell Us Library Satisfaction Survey 2018: Putteridge Bury

Re-open the Putteridgebury library, or at least allow students to have books sent over
No library services at Putteridgebury
Do have access to resources via the digital collection

The decision to close the Education Collection at Putteridge Bury was made in close consultation with the department. Closing the resource room at Putteridge Bury from academic year 2017 – 2018 was as a result of the closure of the Butterfield site (Butterfield staff serviced Putteridge Bury) and the relocation of all library staff to the Luton campus. Library services at Putteridge Bury are available digitally and online.

The Luton Library is open 24/7 Monday to Sunday, provides access to a wide range of study spaces, state of the art PCs, a reservations collection point and help and advice on using the library from the Customer Service desk and academic skill support from the Study Hub Drop In desk.

Extensive work has been undertaken by the teaching team and the Academic Liaison Librarian to ensure at least 90% of all material listed on reading lists is available digitally.

Discussions were undertaken with the teaching team to explore them taking ownership of the reservations collection service before the closure, but at that time it was felt unnecessary.

Tell Us Library Satisfaction Survey 2018: Study Environment

It's bright and has a range of different study areas to suit a range of study styles
The vertical openings between the floors creates unnecessary noise and disturbance. The PCs in the pods do not always work and students are not actively encouraged to obey the rules of the silent / quiet study spaces
The discover search engine regularly has problems. It often returns nothing when a simple search is entered and even when journals are found the links to the printable resources don't work. This is very frustrating and time consuming.
Overall the library is well equipped and resourced. There needs to be better management of the floors to ensure that those students who want a quiet place to study can do so without people talking and using their mobile phones.

Thank you for your feedback LRSE is always looking for way to support the teaching and research activities across all programmes in the University.

The University took a lot of care in choosing the furniture for the new library and getting our architects to design a space to offer a variety of study environments. I am glad the space supports your learning.

The vertical openings you describe are light wells which are designed to maximise natural light which helps create a positive study environment.

If any equipment (PCs printers or presentation lecterns) is not working you must report it to staff on the level 1 Customer Service Desk so it can be investigated and put right. Windows and Macs are available. heating and lights are ok. comfortable chairs. fast internet
Some students are too noisy. Even when I am in the silence area I hear their loud voices. I hope more strict disciplinary actions towards those.
Improve: I am a research student. I am a regular commuter to the library.  I prefer studying at night. From last summer the library closes at 11 p.m. during the summer holiday. I hope the library opens 24/7 during the summer. I suggest  if only one floor to be opened during this time. In this way costs will be reduced and research students can use the service.
I stay most of my time there. I feel more comfortable there as everything is available.

Staff were very helpful and friendly when needed to laminate

Many thanks for passing on your appreciation.

Library needs USB adapter on desks

Many thanks for your suggestion. The adapter - being the wire from your device to a power source - is unique to your device. The University cannot supply the range of adapters necessary to make this a fair offer to the whole University community. You may use your adapter from home to charge your phone/laptop on University PCs. All the student desktop PCs  have USB ports in the base unit of the machine. There are 4 on the PC base 2 at the front 2 at the back. These are all accessible from the desk height. If you have trouble locating one please ask staff.

Referencing

In my thesis I want to reference Quintilian, Newton, Isaac Walton, Plato, Lewis Carroll and Conan Doyle. (There are other references too!). Questions:
  • It seems silly to use a 1889 translation of Plato and write Plato (1889). How do I do it?
  • Does it matter that Plato and Lewis Carroll are pen names?
  • Does it matter that I don't have exact dates for Plato and Quintilian?
  • If I cite a 20th century edition of Isaac Newton is it that edition that I quote?

Could I pop in to see someone? I would prefer the Bedford campus but I do have to go down to Luton at some stage (probably next week)

Thank you for your enquiry. I would advise you to visit the Study Hub for referencing advice and/or speak to your Academic Liaison Librarian who is based on the Bedford Campus

Luton Library Environment

It's very disappointing that library environment is very noisy and there
are no measures to keep it professional. I am aware that there are quite
areas but there are even study group areas which students should take into
consideration.
Students play music in the library just because there is an availability of
silent area to study for the genuine student who sincerely wants to study
and focus.
There are measures to indicate that no food is allowed in the library, but
there are no signs of maintaining ethics of the library.
- students talk loudly on their phones.
- students play music when they want to.
- students study in a group, while others are trying to make maximum use of
the library to study.
If these students who create such environment are being corrected, they
take a liberty to show directions to the silent area and forget what
library is meant for.
Hope this email does solve the issues that are happening in the library
specifically on the third floor.

Filming at Luton Library

I left my home and my 18-month-old son today to come and study in the masonite floor as usual. Is where I study efficiently, and I do not have any problem with standard noise. Today, I have a significant assignment to submit, and I find out that a catwalk photography show held in the library. My house today with my son would be quieter than here honestly. I am writing you to complain because I have asked the manager of the show how long it will take? And he answered me that should not stay here and go to the 6th floor.Of course, I cannot do that I feel comfortable on this floor, and I wish to stay here. I would appreciate if you will not hold such shows in the library again.Library should be a place for study and only. However, is not an appropriate view to see everywhere almost naked women. They dressed for a party, and such a place like a library should not tolerate this

Thank you for raising your concerns in your live chat 28.4.18. The ground floor of the Luton Library is not viewed as a standard part of the general library study environment. Its a drop in space for the general public as well as the University community with a lot of foot traffic, a cafe and general hub bub. The mezzanine floor is an open study space and as it overlooks the ground floor is not regarded as a quiet place to study.

Learning Resources and Service Excellence likes to support all student activity and the University particularly encourages any student filming anywhere on Campus (observing appropriate health and safety precautions). The film crew asked for permission to film which was granted. Filming does not take place very often and the library will continue to be used as a venue for this.

I am concerned that you have not considered using the other library floors to study as they are designed specifically for any learning style. There is social learning spaces on the level 2 & 3 silent study spaces on levels 4, 5 & 6. In between there general work spaces and level 1 is closest to staff help. Please can I encourage you to one of the other floors. If you would like to specify why you don't feel comfortable working on the 6th floor maybe we can find somewhere that would suit you.

Printing Dissertation

I am a 3rd year student who has just finished my dissertation, i booked into reprographics for Tuesday to get it printed and bound before my Thursday deadline, however i was told by someone that i have to print my dissertation elsewhere and that reprographics only bind them and do not print.

I was wondering if we are allowed to print dissertations in the library using our print credit or if we aren't  because of the number of pages that would be printed as i have to print 2 copies of it.

It would be greatly appreciated if you could let me know if it is OK

Thank you for your enquiry. Have you spoken to Reprographics about printing your dissertation? If you take it on a USB to Albert Road my understanding is that they will print and then bind it for you (ask about costs) . If that is not the case of course you can print in the library. Remember to top up your print credit to accommodate this.
