Books Unlocked

Its noticeable that the only religion that gets a "honourable mention" on the floor 1 book display in front of the printer copier is Islam. Where's Christianity & Judaism?

Thank you for highlighting the display in Luton Library featuring the series A Very Short Introduction To…
The exhibition for February draws attention to the library’s large collection of A Very Short Introduction To…. books. This very successful non-fiction series is beautifully designed and the brightly coloured covers make a vivid display. From Chaos to Celts,  from Quakers to Quantum Theory, experts in their field are given 100 pages to sum up a lifetime’s study. The books slip into the pocket, they’re perfect for buses and trains. The display uses quotes, questions and teasers to make you want to know more. Intelligent reading for busy people.
As the display items are available for loan there cannot be a constant range of titles on view. Thank you  for your interest may I suggest that your reserve the Christanity and Judaism titles to ensure you get an opportunity to read them? The series also includes other world relgions.

External Customer

I am currently Acca student and would like to use Luton Bedfordshire LRC facilities to study for my exams. Also to note I am Hertfordshire university graduate. I would be grateful if you could let me know if it is possible to have access to such facilities. And if so, is there any costs.

Thanks for your enquiry. You may join University of Bedfordshire's Learning Resources as an External Reference Customer for £30 per year

Our terms and conditions are here

Application form is half way down this web page

Once you have read all this information if you have any questions please let me know

Longer loans

As a part-time doctoral student living abroad and doing my research abroad, and because most of the books I needed by now were only in printed not e-books, I am very frustrated that I am not allowed to borrow a book for a longer period than the students who are living in UK

Thank you for your query we will consider your suggestion.
As a doctoral student  journal articles are the expected information sources  rather than  books. If you are reliant on these texts you could consider purchasing your own copies.
May I suggest that you investigate using a University close to where you live - they may allow visitor access.

Bedford Library - AutoCAD

I am a second year construction management student, I chose to take my course part time and make use of Bedford library for my studies!

I would like to make the suggestion of installing AutoCAD on some PC's on the Bedford campus!
It has been mentioned to our lecturers a couple of times and access to this software has been made available at the new library over in Luton!

I am pleased to tell you that we have put AutoCAD onto 2 PCs on the 3rd floor of the Library (BPLV-008 and BPLV-012).

I hope you find it useful. If you have trouble identifying the PCs please ask staff at the Customer Service desk.

Sconul Access

I'm a student from the University of Kent and I wanted to check if I am able to use your library facilities at your Luton Campus?

Also, if this is possible where is the best place to park?

Thanks for your enquiry. You should ask Kent about your eligibility to use the Sconul Access scheme – which is free. If you are eligible and you get your email of authorisation from Sconul Access you may go through our application process here:

Regarding parking I would suggest Vicarage Street parking £1.50 for 2 hours

Business Management resources

£9,800 pyear - books required not in the Uni library! £9,800 and no books provided mental abuse - discouraging learning - insulting lack of support

We apologise for any inconvenience that not being able to access the required resources has caused you.  As a faculty, there is a book budget of just under £61000 spread over 3 departments and over 4 campuses, balancing which can create shortages at different locations.  In the short term, can you send me a list of the units that you are registered on and I will check the reading lists for availability at Bedford?  Then, would it be possible to arrange an appointment with you to discuss which resources you are unable to access so that a list of urgent purchases can be submitted for the Bedford campus? anne.lawrence:beds.ac.uk

Luton Library - temperature

Great environment. The heating could be upped slightly higher to take the mind off feeling cold and concentrate on studying

Thank you for your comment. The building management for Luton Library is set between 19 and 23 degrees centigrade. If the temperature falls between these values then it is "correct" if it falls below 19 degrees then we can report it.

There should be a cardboard thermometer near where you are sitting to measure the temperature. if there isn't please ask staff on the level 1 Customer Service desk to help you read the temperature.

Luton Library - Feature Service Height Adjustable tables

Height adjustable tables. Whether you're short or tall, want to sit or stand each floor of Luton Library has a height adjustable table for you to work at. With the press of a button you can raise or lower the table top to suit your requirements.
If you are studying for long periods in the library alternating between sitting and standing while you study minimises discomfort and fatigue.
Why not look out for these tables when you're in the library and try them out?

Luton - study environment

I find Luton Library very noisy Not enough is being done to keep noise levels down. My suggestion will be to dedicate an entire floor to silent study area as in Bedford or the old Luton Library and stricter rules on keeping noise levels to a minimum should be imposed. It is not very conducive for postgraduate study with that amount of noise.

Thank you for your enquiry. There are 3 dedicated Silent Rooms in Luton Library and the noise in these rooms is monitored. They are on level 4, level 5 and level 6. Please make sure you use these areas for silent study. Please do not confuse the Group Study rooms (maximum of 7 people) with the Silent Study rooms - individual study carrels minimal PCs - please ask staff if you are unsure.

If you are using these spaces and they are as noisy as you describe please report it to staff on level 1 Customer Service desk or overnight to security on the ground floor

Luton Library - cleanliness

I am writing concerning the untidiness of the new library. I believe that we are responsible in cleaning up after ourselves, however, it is very unfair if we have to clean up after other people's mess as well. The girls' toilets, particularly in the library, are also very dirty. I am writing this not only to complain, but to also show that I care about the library, considering it has only been open late last year and to see the state it is in, is very saddening. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Thank you for raising your concerns. I share your concerns. We have a marvelous team of cleaners who do their best to keep the library clean. We also have a code of conduct which states

Food and drink is limited to reduce waste on library floors and lingering smells
Customers must not deface or otherwise damage books, equipment, furniture, the fabric of the building or other items of Learning Resources property.
All Learning Resources customers are expected to help maintain a pleasant working environment by clearing away rubbish appropriately in the landfill and recycling bins provided.

Unfortunately if some customer choose not to abide by these requirements we do not have a "house keeping" team to clear up behind them.

I have passed your comments to our Facilities team to see if they have any suggestions

Luton Library - cleanliness

I am writing concerning the current state of the library. It is really bad when we get to the library to study and the tables, floor and the computer stands are all dirty. I know that who make that dirty is the students but we should not be affected by the wrong actions of some. For me, the library is an important space for studying and if this place it is not tidy, I cannot study there and in my position are a lot of students. Hope that this problem could be solved in a short time so that we can use the most of the amazing library. Thank you for your time

Regarding the books please check our catalogue. It is part of your academic development to find materials for yourself

If the books are not available at your Campus please take advantage of our Reservations service

Reservation query

it says it is available to pick up but it isn’t on the shelf…This happened with an assessment book as well as the Heylock book. I suggest you speak with the Head Librarian, who advised me to fill out the form to highlight the problems I and they are experiencing.

I would like to say, Bedford Library staff are exemplary in their attitude and help.

Thank you for the update. I have been in contact with the Bedford team throughout your complaint. There seems to have been a problem with the returns machine at UCMK which was satisfying reservation books when they returned and sending out emails which were not.  The UCMK self issue machine is now back from the menders and the problem seems to have stopped. The Bedford staff are rectifying your mistake with the Putt reservation so that the book  will be sent to Bedford for you.
I can only apologise again for the inconvenience this has caused you

Thursday 2 February 2017

Reservations

I have reserved a book and made a specific journey to collect. However for the second time it has been held @ M.K. site. It is a different book admittedly, but the same problem has occurred due to an error @ M.K. Bedford Library staff are so helpful and friendly they are as embarrassed as I am because it is affecting studies

am really sorry to hear about the  mis-directed reservation item. In order to investigate this please can you give me details of the book in question?

I note from your library account that all the reservations requested by you are for pick up at Bedford with the exception of
Primary mathematics: teaching theory and practice
you chose to collect this from Putteridge Bury. is this correct?
The same item is available on the open shelves at Bedford

If you check your library account you can see all this information for yourself
