Butterfield - noisy study environment

I was in the Butterfield library today and the amount of noise coming from the reception area is unacceptable. I am desperately trying to complete my dissertation but found it very difficult with the disruption to concentrate. I'm not trying to be a kill joy but I have travelled far to use the facilities and make the most of it. I understand that a small amount of noise will occur but it is very hard to tolerate.

I hope it comes to their attention and be more considerate.

Thank you for contacting me and letting me know the problems you are dealing with. Choosing your study environment is essential in trying to do your best work. I completely understand your choice to work in Silence. Unfortunately Butterfield Campus does not have capacity for silent study. This means that – unavoidably – study areas will be noisier than you would like.

Virtually every course of study has an element of group work that requires appropriate space for students to work together. Each student of the University has their own learning style. This style may change as an individual progresses through academia or according to the assignment in hand. Some people like to work in noisy environments. Some people need to talk as part of their learning style. As a University of adults self monitoring is a part of that progression. One person's idea of quiet or silent is quite different to another. Setting a standard of behaviour when applied across many individuals the environment is not going to be quiet.

May I suggest that you use the Luton Campus for your dissertation write up? Not only is it open 24/7 x 365 it has two silent floors (levels 2 & £) which are monitored electronically to ensure that the study environment is maintained.
