Books

More books Thanks for your enquiry. I will need more specifics on what you are looking for to help you further. I will secomnd guess what your query may be ihn the mean time: Students have been telling Learning Resources and the University that there weren't enough copies of textbooks available for you to read. Well the university heard what you said and has given us an extra £100,000 to spend. The team of Academic Liaison Librarians have been busy checking reading lists, assessing which books have large numbers of reservations on them and consulting with academic staff to identify which key texts we should be buying. Our aim is to provide more print copies of core essential reading and purchase more e books to provide wider reading around your subject. If you have specific books that you need but can't find please use our Request a Resource form http://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/contact/recommend-a-resource If the books you want are on loan please use our Reservations service http://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/libraryservices/availableservices/reserve hope that helps

Luton - IT Suite temperatures

Myself and two friends have been sitting in the beautiful new IT suite for about 2 weeks straight now and the temperatures in here are immensely cold.... it is very hard to concentrate when we are freezing

I noted your enthusiasm for the new space and was very pleased.  I am sure it is not just you and your friends so we will look in to the problem and hopefully come up with a solution. I am very sorry to hear that the temperature in the refurbished IT suite is hampering you using the space.  The Estates and facilities department are looking into the issue for us.  The Library staff were unaware of the problem.  It is always helpful if students inform library staff directly if they have issues so that we can action the problem immediately.  I hope to have a positive solution in the next day or so

Bedford - Self Returns

... concern about the book return machine.  She said how difficult it was to see the screen with the glare from the sun and asked if a shield/cover could be attached (or possibly moved inside now the library is open 24/7).

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I am sorry that you have been experiencing problems. The glare is a difficult one as it only happens at certain times of the year and day during certain conditions (sunny days). We are looking into getting some Multi Layer, Anti Reflection Film to put on the screen to see if that helps The cost to move units inside will be prohibitively high.

Refwork and Nvivo

I'm a doctoral student and have been trying to download RefWorks to my home laptop.  I've gone in via the library catalogue but got the attached message in response.  Please could you take a look and advise how and when I might be able to resolve whatever the issue us?

I'd also like to be able to download Nvivo - my course director has said that this should be free for doctoral students.  Please could you let me know how to get hold of it?

Thank you for highlighting the problems you have been having with Refworks. I am sorry for the inconvenience this has caused.
We haven't had any general problems with logging into RefWorks so I suspect this is something about your account.
I think that the problem has arisen because as a doctoral student you have dual staff and student logins. However as far as the library systems are concerned, your staff username aXXXXXX does not have rights associated with it, and for library login purposes you should be using your student username ie student reg number. I suspect that you have tried logging into RefWorks with the staff username, which is why you've seen this error. Could you try again with the student login, and let me know if there is still a problem? If there is, there may be a problem with how your account has been created.

Regarding Nvivo please contact Cherilyn Dance, as a researcher you are entitled to a University Licence for this product.

Butterfield - Temperatures

It is hard to sit in the Butterfield library campus due to lack of central heating. The building was cold and I was studying from 10.30 till 5pm. It was hard experience, but I need the books to look for. Therefore please fix the problem with the lack of appropriate room temp.

Problems with Butterfield's heating were reported to Facilities 30 October. Since then repairs have been done and new parts installed. It is hoped that the problem has now been completly resolved. If not please let us know.

Luton Social Learning Space pods - cables

The cables in pod 5 are are not working

Many thanks for bringing this to my attention. May I reassure you that the pods are checked every day by Learning Resources, unfortunately our customers keep pulling the network cables (and other cables) out of the PCs. We have tested some network cable locks and hopefully will be able to purchase and install these soon. This should help prevent this from happening again. Until then if the cables have been pulled out please report it to staff on level 1 at the Customer Service desk and the cables will be plugged in.

WiFi access

The university is very ok compare to where I come from but the fact that I am int student I have some difficulty accessing the net.

Thank you for your feedback. It is always a boost to have something positive said about the student experience at the University of Bedfordshire. Thank you for taking the time to do that.

I have noted your comments about accessing the the internet. May I reassure you straight away that it has nothing to do with you being an international student. In order to resolve this problem I will need specific details but to second guess some of the problems:
if you are using a University PC in the LRC and you cannot access the net let staff know at the Customer Service desk straight away and they will rectify things for you.
if you are using your own laptop/tablet in the LRC there are some areas where WiFi access is better than others please ask staff for advice
if you are trying to access WiFi elsewhere in the University please remember that high traffic areas will have the poorest WiFi connections why not move to a slightly quieter area and try the WiFi there?

I hope this helps. If you continue to have problems please talk to Learning Resources staff at the Customer Service desk in the LRC

Sconul Access

I'm a student at the University of Northampton. I live in Luton and commute to Northampton for Lectures.

Having done some research into local libraries I have found that the SCONUL Access scheme means I might be able to gain access to your Library in Luton.

Could you confirm that this is the case, and if so what do I have to do to be able to use your facilities?

Thank for your interest. You should be eligible to use University of Bedfordshire facilities as a part of the Sconul Access scheme. Check with the University of Northamptonshire and they will direct you to the Sconul Access applications process.
When you've done that these pages on LRWeb should be of use to you:

Luton: IT Suite temperature

Student explained that the the air vents in the ICT suite are blowing out cold air and would like the temperature to be changed, as she explained that it is too cold to work in.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. This matter has been reported to Facilities and they are investigating the problem. There seemed to be an incident with the door heater by the entrance and due to that there is an cold air flow around the area.
Hopefully the matter has been resolved now. If not please let me know immediately

Document Supply

how do I request titles from the British library via the lrc?

As you are a level 3 undergraduate you are entitled to 5 free Document Supply requests. There is a raft of information here:

and the forms are here

Request for the University to buy books

I am enquiring about the possibility of the university buying some books.
I was told that this may be a possibility in my lecture a few weeks ago,
Please can you advise me on who I should contact about this.

Thanks for your enquiry. I am not sure I completely understand your query so I will answer your question with two options:

If you mean will the University buy your own old text books - Learning Resources does not buy second hand books.  May I suggest that you contact the SU and see if they can help you?

If you mean that you have a suggestion of some titles the University may want to buy - if there's enough budget - may I direct you to

Alumni Printing

As an Alumni student I feel I should be allowed to access the printing facility as well as use of the guest computers. It is very inconvinincing to access information and having to go elsewhere to print it. Please review this matter.

Thanks for your suggestion I am happy to investigate this matter on your behalf. It may take some time so I will repost when there is an answer to this

Bedford - PCs on Silent floors

Please could we have move pcs on the silent study floor. Thanks

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. We really appreciate customers telling us when things don't work for them. There are 22 PCs on level 2. PC use creates noise so it was a conscious decision to restrict the number of PCs on the Silent Floors. You are welcome to use your own laptop or tablet on the Silent Floors - they are noticeably quieter that desktop PCs - there are specific plug in power points available on every floor. If you cannot find any please ask staff on the Customer Service Desk (ground floor) for help. You cannot plug your device into the the University network so please use WiFi if required.

We are hoping to bring in an on-line PC booking system in 2014. This will mean that you can book a PC in advance for when you need it. Please check the LR Web News section for details in the New Year

Retired staff membership

I am writing to ask whether as an ex-employee of the University of Luton (as it was) now in receipt of LGC pension, I can join and make use of the university library?

Thanks for your enquiry. As a retired member of staff you are entitled to  free walk-in Reference access. Or Associate member status is available for half the standard fee (currently £30).

Details are here

there are 7 web pages in this section of LR Web. I would particularly draw your attention to:

Luton - Study Enviroment

Just as I am sitting in the library and just thought of an idea. It would be nice to have a announcements for students reminding to low their voice in main library. Like that is already a social space but would be nice to keep reminding rather then students do that, it will staff making it in polite way.

Please consider it as I even ask some students.

Thank you for sharing your idea with me. I appreciate the opportunity to clarify what we currently do.
Levels 2 & 3 of the LRC are silent floors. They are monitored electronically and by staff patrolling. This way we can keep the study environment as silent as possible.
In the rest of the library we offer a variety of learning environments and the sound level varies.
Thank you for your suggestion. I understand why you have made it but after due consideration  I do not think it would be appropriate for staff to walk around adding to the noise in the area. In addition we do not have enough staff to patrol the whole library in the way you suggest. It is more effective to use staff patrols on the silent floors than try to establish a sound level across the library.
If you require a silent study environment may I encourage you to use the levels 2 & 3. If you like a quiet environment may I suggest the Park Street end of the library. If you like somewhere with a bit of bustle level 1 Church End would be the right spot. More social areas are on the ground floor in the Social Learning Space and the IT Suite.

Luton: Silent Study

i am fed up of trying to work at the library and never getting far... never any space in silent study, social space has turned into a circus with people messing around and so has the IT suite.... how difficult is it- if you dont want to work, then dont go to the library.... some of us want to work and are being prevented

First of all I would like to apologise for the inconvenience caused by this problem.
We take care to ensure that important matters such as this are properly managed and dealt with. I sympathise with your frustration and would like to offer the following information that may be useful to you.
As you know Luton has two Silent Study floors with 36 PCs on level 2 with a total of 112 study places and 10 PCs on level 3 with a total of 88 study places. These floors are rarely filled to capacity although I do understand the PC study spaces get filled up the quickest. You know you are welcome to bring your own laptop/tablet to use in the LRC and access the Student WiFi
Going to the Social Learning Space or the IT Suite as an alternative to the Silent floors I must say is destined to fail. By their very names you cannot expect them to quiet let alone silent areas. I would however suggest level 1 or 0 in the Park Street end of the LRC as a quiet alternative to the Silent floors.
We are hoping to introduce a PC booking system in 2014 to enable customers to book PCs in advance of their visit for when they want them. We are hoping this will help customers get the service they want when they need it.
I am sorry that on this occasion an acceptable standard has clearly not been met and we clearly have not succeeded in meeting your expectations. I hope the information included here will help make your next visit to the LRC a happier one.

Luton: PCs in Silent areas

I really enjoy the fact that the library is open 24/7, but as technology develops and it becomes a graver part of our student life I would appreciate if there are more silent areas, where we could use PCs. I do realise that the university has lots of computers, but it also becomes crowder and crowder, therefore the 'quest' to find an available PC that is also in a quiet area becomes harder. Besides that the student life is great, the staff do an amazing job, and societies prosper. Thank you for that experience, and lets hope you would never stop progress!

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. We really appreciate customers telling us when things don't work for them. There are 36 PCs on level 2 - 6 in the study room - and 10 PCs on level 3 - 5 in the study room. PC use creates noise so it was a conscious decision to restrict the number of PCs on the Silent Floors. You are welcome to use your own laptop or tablet on the Silent Floors - they are noticeably quieter that desktop PCs - there are specific plug in power points available on every floor. If you cannot find any please ask staff on the Customer Service Desk (level 1) for help. You cannot plug your device into the the University network so please use WiFi if required.

We are hoping to bring in an on-line PC booking system in 2014. This will mean that you can book a PC in advance for when you need it. Please check the LR Web News section for details in the New Year

Luton - study environment

Please remove the extra seating from the library corner students sit there for chat which creates disturbance. Keep silence in the library should be followed.

Thank you for taking the time to write to us. We appreciate the opportunity to clarify what the position is. The Luton LRC has 2 silent floors: levels 2 & 3. Everywhere else is open access and available for students to study in the way they think fit. Group work is a recognised part of the University's curriculum so students "chatting" is a very legitimate practice.
The seating on level 1 isn't "extra" it is supposed to be there.
I am sorry for any frustration you may have experienced. May I suggest that you study on level 2 or 3 in future? Those floors are meant to be Silent.

Bedford PCs

Need more computers on 2nd floor
Need more computers in general
Open two rooms on top floor when not in use

Thank you for your enquiry. As you know level 2 at Bedford Library has become a silent study area. PC use creates noise so it was a conscious decision to move some of the PCs from level 2 to different floors. There are 22 PCs on that floor but there another 150 PCs on the other library floors. In addition there are 42 PCs in the Learning Hub. You are welcome to use your own laptop or tablet in the Library there are specific plug in power points available on every floor. If you cannot find any please ask staff on the Customer Service Desk (ground floor) for help. You cannot plug your device into the the University network so please use WiFi if required

There are a good proportion of PCs to students at Bedford. We rarely have no PCs left for customers to use. Please check all the library floors for available machines. We are hoping to introduce a PC booking service to make it easier for customers to get a machine when they need it most. Please check the banners on LRWeb for news of this development in the next few months.

The two training rooms on level 3 of the library are not for open access use they do not have the same set up and the PCs on the library floors. They are booked by University timetabling and currently fall outside Learning Resources remit.

Luton: Helpful staff

I would like to say "thank you" and commend the librarians (particularly Chris Whitfield) who were extremely helpful in getting a DVD for me. And then when it did not register the librarians all ran round to help me. Thanks

We really appreciate you taking the time to let us know we're doing something right.  We look forward to serving you in the future

Noisy Door

Luton LRC level 2 Doors - doors are making noise at level 2 when closed or open

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. I am sorry that the doors are disturbing the study environment on level 2 of the LRC. I have referred this on to our Facilities team so it can be addressed.

Lost ID

Unfortunately I have somehow lost my student ID card and despite searching everywhere I could think of, I have no idea where it has gone. Without my card I have no way of getting onto my university emails or the library system as I don't know what my ID number is.

Would it be possible for me to get a replacement Student ID card somehow?

I am sorry to learn that you have lost your ID card. You can get a replacement but it will cost you £10. You have to be on Campus to collect it. Which Campus is more convenient for you Luton or Bedford? ID cards are issued by security.

Luton: go to the security barriers Park Street End of the Campus, next to the LRC entrance between 9 - 4.30 Mon - Fri and someone will help you

Bedford: go to the main Reception desk in P Block 9 - 4.30 Mon - Fri and someone will help you.

To speed the process it might be helpful to bring some ID (similar to when you registered) birth certificate proof of home address

Referencing

I am a student at University of Bedfordshire, studying Biomedical Science Level 1.
I had a complaint that on the website under the study Hub section majority Harvard style referencing techniques are shown, as I am a in a science based faculty the journal of cell biology referencing techniques are not much elaborated.
It only shows how to cite from journals.
If it shows how to cite references from websites, books, etc it would be much useful.
I have emailed my tutors and lecturers but no reply from them.
How to do referencing hasn't been showed to us.
I have a rough idea but that was told by my PAl Leader but I don't think they were sure how to do exact referencing from internet and were not much confident in explaining exactly how to reference from a book using the journal of cell science in the correct format and order.

There is a wealth of information for you here:
