Books

I think the university needs to increase the number of books in the library and update them to the latest versions

We would whole heartily agree, which is why the University is investing an extra £100,000 in the book collections compared to last year and the student driven e-book purchase initiative will begin again in January 2015.  The Academic Liaison Librarians team are in constant communication with academic departments to ensure that wherever possible only items that are already available in the library appear on reading lists.

Billed items

I have received a notification from the library stating that I must pay £35 for a book I have lost, but in fact I still in possession. The reason I have missed notices is that she is on placement so is generally rather busy.

Thank you for contacting us you have £40.25 in library fines and Billed items on your account. If your library account has a Billed items or fines over £22 your library account is blocked

If you return the Billed item its Bill of £30 will be reduced to a fine and your library account will be unblocked

You took out this item on 15.10.14 it was due back on 10.11.14 after one renewal. You have been sent 3 overdues (by email) and the book is now more than 5 weeks over due

If your loans are more than 5 weeks overdue they become Billed Items. You will be issued with a replacement bill for the items you have on loan and your library account account will be blocked.

As soon as you return your loans the bill will be lifted, replaced with a fine and your library account will be restored

If your loan items are lost you will need to pay for them, or set up a payment plan to pay for them before your library account is restored. Please talk to staff at the Customer Service desk about lost items, we will help you look for the missing books before you have to pay for replacements.

You can check your library account any time you are on line to see if you need to renew an item collect a reservation or if you have any fines to pay:

Luton - praise for staff

The Library resource teams are always ready to help whenever they are approached for help. They are doing an excellent job, most especially Marie (lovely lady)

Thank you for your kind words. I will make sure your compliments are passed on to the staff concerned. I am glad you find the service helpful. Good luck in your studies.

Luton - praise for staff

I had excellent help from Jane. She is always ready to help.

want to thank you for the kind words you said about Jane at Luton LRC.
Your thoughts are important to us, but we're especially pleased when the feedback is positive.

We try hard to provide the best possible service to our customers and their satisfaction is our reward.  We are honoured to be part of your journey with the University of Bedfordshire
We really appreciate you taking the time to let us know we're doing something right.  We look forward to serving you in the future

Aylesbury - need silent study

2nd Year students make a lot of noise in library. Social chats. Librarian asked them to keep noise levels down. They were extremely rude when she left. Cohort13B. We need a quiet place to study."

Thank you for taking the time to write to us. We appreciate the opportunity to clarify what the position is. Aylesbury LRC has a quiet study area at the top of the library. This is near the staff area and you may ask staff for assistance in maintaining the study environment. Everywhere else is open access and available for students to study in the way they think fit. Group work is a recognised part of the University's curriculum so students "chatting" is a very legitimate practice.

The staff are all too aware of conflicting student needs and try to maintain a reasonable noise level through out the library. They can’t station themselves in the computer room all the time. They do walk through regularly and monitor the noise and if necessary the students are asked to be quieter.
It is up to the students to monitor and behave appropriately.
Please remember that what one person thinks is quiet another person will find unacceptably noisy. It also has to be remembered that often this week’s worker is last week’s (or next) talker.

I am sorry for any frustration you may have experienced. May I suggest that you study in the quiet room in future?

Document Supply

When we order a book/paper/chapter from document supply, it would be most useful to have a record of this request sent to our email or LRC accounts, so we can keep track of what has arrived, what may have been sent in error and what we are waiting for. Thanks

Thank you for your enquiry. It is good academic practice to keep a record of all materials  consulted - and by the same token requested - when researching an assignment.
The Document Supply process for digital items delivered by Secure Electronic Delivery (SED) is automatic and the item is automatically posted to your University email account.
http://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/libraryservices/docsupply/document-supply-q-and-a/sed
The item won't appear on your library record and you would have to email the Document Supply team to get a report on progress (your ID number would be sufficient if you couldn't remember the details of your request)
docsupply@beds.ac.uk
This is unless  the digital item cannot be supplied. In those rare instances you would be emailed  directly by the Document Supply team to be told what the problem is.

The Document Supply team can provide, on request, a list of outstanding SED requested items. You can email the team or ask at the Customer Service Desk, staff can print it off the list of outstanding requests or show you them.

If  your request is for an article, chapter or paper for print delivery you can view these items on your Library Account

The library staff were very helpful and accommodating especially Clare Hewitt she was very helpful in making coming today to the Bedford Library enjoyable and learnt a lot. Thank you all.

PS I was also met at the entrance with support and a smile by Debbie Moore

I want to thank you for the kind words you said about Clare and Debbie at Bedford Campus Library.

Nursing Student - staff praise

Having just completed my top up degree as a nurse. BSC in Diabetes care. I enjoyed most of my lecturers, there was good communication between the students and Lecturers. Most of the lecturers were helpful and supportive. The library staff were also helpful, they go all the way to make sure my needs were met such as getting the books I needed for my course work and helping me to sort out the computer

We really appreciate you taking the time to let us know we're doing something right.  All the best for the future

Luton - WiFi

Please can you sort out the internet we pay money for this so we need the benefit of quality service

Thank you for raising your concerns with me. I apologise for the inconvenience caused. I am assuming that you are trying to connect to WiFi as there are no reported problems with University PCs. I am sorry that you are having problems with WiFi. Nothing has been reported to LRC staff today (14.11.14) To resolve any issues please ensure you have followed advice from LRC staff. It may be a case of moving to a different part of the LRC.
http://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/libraryservices/availableservices/wifi
The University is experiencing connection fluctuations with its WiFi network. If none of the normal access routes work may I suggest that you work on one of the LRC's PCs and save your work to a USB stick. This isn't an ideal solution but while the University attempts to resolve the WiFi problems we may have to work differently for a while.

UCMK - reservation collection kiosk

I was extremely excited about returning to education via University of Bedfordshire, MK Campus and induction day talked about us being equal to full time students and good facilities in all campus's. I am afraid I have been disappointed by the facilities at MK Campus,  Even the library machine is broken so we cannot order books, I ordered one over a week ago but couldn't collect it last week,

Thank you for taking the trouble to write to me about your concerns. You can always order books via the library catalogue to support your studies at UCMK
http://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/libraryservices/availableservices/reserve
The library kiosk machine unfortunately was broken for a short while but that - I am happy to say - has now been fixed. If there is ever any technical problems there is a manual collection service from the customer service desk in place to mediate this. It sounds that on this occasion the member of staff was away from the desk and therefore couldn't help you. I do apologise for the inconvenience this has caused you.

Butterfield Temperature

The library staff are extremely helpful and polite. Thank you Also there is no heating in the library and it is freezing

We really appreciate you taking the time to let us know we're doing something right.  The staff look forward to serving you in the future. I am sorry that the study environment at Butterfield is rather cold at the moment. The heating problems at Butterfiled in the LRC have been reported and are under review by the University's Facilities department. I have reinforced the helpdesk process by requesting supplementary heaters until the heating issues have been resolved.

Endnote

Can some students come over to get Endnote installed on their PC/apple laptops.

The company who was the reseller for Endnote has gone into administration and can no longer supply personal copies of the software or provide support. ICT are the administrators for Endnote and anyone specifically wanting an Endnote account needs to help desk their request with ICT.

Finding Resources

Can i access journal articles through Breo, or should i be using some other portal? I'm looking for this Malik, R., Mandin, P. (2012). Engaging within and across culture. In Krause, I. B. (Ed.). (2012). Culture and Reflexivity in Systemic Psychotherapy: Mutual Perspectives. Karnac Books i cannot get it from Google scholar, and it is not an article which has been uploaded to the 'Gateway area@ I'm sure i was told all of this in my excellent induction, but apparently it was too much to retain, are you able to direct me ?

Thanks for your enquiry. BREO has links to the library catalogue

PCs in Silent areas

Can we have some more computers in the quiet area of the library. There are two there but a few more would get us away from the noisy computer room when we want to study.

In order to maintain the study environment in the silent areas Learning Resources minimises the number of desk top PCs available. There are booking facilities and I would advise you to use them to ensure that you get a PC in the environment you prefer to work in

International Business - books

No books available in the library. All suffer for books and due to less books we have to book it early.

I am sorry that you are having problems accessing the resources you require. If you find an item on the catalogue or in DISCOVER that you want to use but isn't available digitally or from the library shelf  it is worth putting a reservation on

Luton - PAD

Pad Team Online says that PAD is on level 1 when in reality it is on 2 floors. I had to wait longer because of a lack of this information on the website

Thanks for raising your concerns. The PAD drop-in is based on level 1 of the campus centre although the PAD team sometimes see students on both level 1 and level 2 at the same time if more than 1 tutor is running drop-in and there isn't space downstairs. The PAD teame operate on a first-come first-served basis regardless of where students are seen.

Yesterday the PAD team piloted running 2 queues to see if this could speed up seeing students. In the event the PAD team found this did not work so will not be repeating this approach to queue management. Learning Resources is sorry if this resulted in anyone having to wait longer than what would ordinarily be the case.

Luton - Self Service

The screen on the self service renting of books kept on crashing. Maybe its time for Uni to have a system check up done. If it weren't for the staff to manually scan the book we would have been able to take them home. Thanks

Thank you for bringing this problem to my attention. I can reassure you that this fault will be looked into immediately. Please accept my apologies for any inconvenience caused.

Students with Assistive Status

I have a complaint to make regarding the Library.  I have a book, now overdue, which I tried to renew online on Mon 27th Oct, which was the due date.  The system did not let me renew it - it didn't say anyone else had reserved it, or give any other reason, the screen just froze.  I tried several times with the same result.  I had been into Campus earlier in the day for an ITT session and could have brought the book with me had I known the system would be down, but I did not, and as I live in Cambridge it was not feasible for me to go back and get it.

This book is now overdue and unable to be renewed as it has a reserve on it.  As I don't drive, it is currently half term, and Uni doesn't start again until 12th Nov, I have no chance to return the book before then, by which time it will have incurred an enormous fine.

I have a Learning agreement with the University.  As I tried my utmost to renew the book on Mon 27th I think it is very unfair that I should incur what will be a substantial fine. I feel this would be discriminatory as it was clearly a fault in the system which made renewing the book on 27th impossible.

Thanks for your enquiry. Looking at your library account I can see that you borrowed that book on 10.9.14. You have renewed it 7 times and was due back yesterday 27.10.14
There is a waiting list of  3 people who have placed reservations and are waiting to use that book. This means that you can no longer renew it and must return it as soon as possible.
You say that the system did not let you renew the book. There is a message that comes up to say "Reserved by another customer please return"

As a Student with Assistive Status you do not get charged fines. Full information is on our website:
Assistive Customers are entitled to unlimited renewals (unless the item is requested by another customer). Fines will be waived but other associated sanctions will apply.

I am sorry that you weren’t aware of this information. It would have been covered at your orientation/induction albeit briefly. Did you miss it by any chance? Please take advantage of the information on LRWeb to help you find out more to help your research.

Putteridge Bury -library facility

A few books I am interested in are listed as being at the Putteridge Bury LRC.

I am a new P/T student and this is the campus I am based at on Thursday evenings. If I reserve the books where do I collect them at Putteridge Bury? We haven’t been shown a library facility there.

There is a small Education Collection on the Putteridge Bury campus. You would have been told this at your induction/orientation – did you miss the session? If you ask the reception staff on Campus or your tutor they should be able to direct you to the library room.

I am sorry but there is no reservation collection facility at Putt at the moment. We are hoping to change this in the next couple of weeks. In the mean time please collect your reservations for Butterfield (open until 5pm) or Luton LRC open 24/7 x 365

It is very disappointed to see that there are not books related to the Psychology degree at the Milton Keynes Uni library. Would be possible to provide at least with a few books or journals, please?

Thank you for taking the trouble to write to me with your request. The majority of University held journals are on-line and I would advise you to check the catalogue to access those resources via your PC or laptop.
As for books, there is an issue with shelf space at UCMK. If you would like to specify what you'd like to see your Academic Liaison Librarian will see what he can do for you.

going to  mail.study.beds.ac.uk and logging in using your username and password.  Even though you may have a personal email account you need to check your university one on a regular basis to read important emails sent from your course or the university.

http://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/libraryservices/availableservices/regforserv/e-mail

BREO is quite a separate product

If you have followed the advice above and you still cannot get into your email account please get back to me straight away

Bedford - Eduroam

Student unable to log onto any wifi, Guest, Student or Eduroam anywhere on the campus. He was extremely annoyed about this and asked for feedback to be sent to the appropriate person (14.10.14)

I am sorry that you could not connect to Eduroam on 14th October. Sometimes it is worth moving to a different part of the building or, as alternative its worth using Learning Resources pcs. There is no Student WiFi only Eduroam so please do not attempt to use that route again.

Putteridge Bury

Please can I pick up books at Putteridgebury again? I've driven all the way to Bedford

Learning Resources is trying to find a resolution to the Putteridge Bury staffing problem as our website says:
Due to circumstances beyond our control we can no longer staff Putteridge Bury library. This means that Putteridge Bury stock cannot be reserved and Putteridge Bury is no longer a reservation collection point. When you reserve other materials from the library catalogue please select the next most convenient campus to collect your books from ie Butterfield LRC, Luton LRC, Bedford Library, Aylesbury LRC or UCMK
Access to the print stock is offered for a limited time and the University would ask you to issue and return your items without staff help. If you get stuck please ring 01582 743895 for assistance
As soon as we have a solution in place we will let you know

Thank you for your enquiry. I am sorry that you are experiencing problems with DawsonEra and have been for some time. Today Monday 20 Oct the University is experiencing problems with accessing eresources. The problem has been reported and is being worked on. I do not have a completion time so may I suggest you try again in about an hour?

Once this problem has been resolved if you continue to have problems with Dawson Era please contact me straight away

IT Problems 20.10.14

Could you please advise how I go about downloading journal articles from BREO / online library catalogue.
I have had a search on the browser and can’t seem to locate the right path.

Thank you for your enquiry. Unfortunately the University is experiencing a few IT Problems at the moment with access to eresources, student email and BREO. The matter is being worked on. Until the issue is resolved I am sorry but you will not be able to access any items from the catalogue.

We have not been given a resolution time so may I suggest you try again in an hour?

Thank you for your patience

Putteridge Bury - Reservations

I am a 3rd year student doing a part time course at Putteridge Bury. I have recently been informed there will be limited library service at the campus anymore and if I want a book that is kept at another campus I must travel there myself. Please tell me WHY? Considering the amount of money I have to pay for my education, the very least ANYONE should expect is a library? As someone who does not drive and lives a 10 minute walk from Putteridge bury, I have relied on having my books delivered to the campus. Do you think it is unfair that other students at other campuses have the benefit of a book delivery service whilst others do not? I look forward to reading your response.

Access to the print stock is offered on a self service basis and the University would ask you to issue and return your items without staff help. If you get stuck please ring 01582 743895 for assistance
You are advised to take advantage of Luton LRC or Bedford Library as they are open 24/7 x 365

I understand your frustration - please understand this decision has not been taken lightly and we are trying to put some restorative measures in place. Please be clear the Education Collection is available on a self service honour basis Monday - Friday 9am - 6pm. It will remain open while we solve the staffing issues. When new staff are in place the facility to collect reservations will be restored. In the meantime should you need to collect a reservation the nearest location is Butterfield (just across the dual carriage way from Putteridge)

Applied Education Book

We have been asked to use Be Safe! health & safety in primary school science - only 1 copy seems to be available

Firstly apologies for only having one copy in stock at Bedford library.  3 copies have now been ordered (unfortunately it is not available as an ebook).  It will  take a couple of weeks to arrive in the library.

You could try the University bookshop – John Smiths to buy a copy http://www.johnsmith.co.uk/product/9780863574269/be-safe

It appears to be out of stock at Amazon but there is one copy available on the abebooks website http://www.abebooks.co.uk/servlet/BookDetailsPL?bi=12852683546&searchurl=isbn%3D9780863574269%26amp%3Bsts%3Dt
if you did want to buy a personal copy.

UCMK - opening hours

Request for longer library opening hours at Milton Keynes please. It would help immensely

UCMK is open for the maximum number of hours available and appropriate to the teaching on Campus.  We are currently open until Mon-Thurs 8.30am-8pm; and Fri 08.30am – 7.30pm in response to Tell Us comments last year. We are unable to open later without incurring significant costs as the whole building shuts at this time. As the Campus develops the opening hours will be reviewed as a part of that development.

I would encourage you to use Luton LRC or Bedford Library outside UCMK opening hours as they are open 24/7 x 365

Oxford House - computer room

Students should be quiet in the computer room.
Library staff tell them to be quiet but when they have gone the noise goes up

Thank you for taking the time to write to us. We appreciate the opportunity to clarify what the position is. Oxford House LRC has a quiet study area at the top of the library and consideration will be given to putting some PCs there. PCs do create noise so that move may well be counter productive.

It is down to the students to monitor and behave appropriately.
Please remember that what one person thinks is quiet another person will find unacceptably noisy. It also has to be remembered that often this week’s worker is last week’s (or next) talker.

I am sorry for any frustration you may have experienced. May I suggest that you study oin the quiet room in future?

Putteridge Bury Education Collection

as I am sure you are aware of the fact that we (Applied Education Studies) have limited library access at our Putteridge Bury Campus. It seems that none of us were given any formal warning of this or real reasons why. Only a piece of paper stated that the university can not man the library. While it may seem simple for us to collect books from another location I can assure you it is not. I work fulltime and have a family which adds extra demands on my time. I do not have any spare time which allows me to travel to another campus. I chose to study at this campus due to it being convenient to my home, work and children and pay a lot of money for a service that I will now not be benefiting from fully. It seems at the moment we can still borrow books from the library I suspect these will get fewer and fewer as time goes by. How is a library service incorporated into university fees? Surely we are entitled to a fully functional library. This is our final year at university and could really do without the added pressure of having a very limited library. If I need to contact somebody else regarding this matter please let me know, alternatively forward the email on to the correct person. I look forward to hearing your response.

External Customer - Guest WiFi

I was not able to use the Guest Wifi on 22/9/14 due to issues with the network. As a paying member this was both an inconvenience and not acceptable as I needed to use it. This has also been an issue before

Thank you for letting me know your concerns
May I point out that you do not pay specifically for WiFi access it is a bonus of LRC membership. Nonetheless I agree that it should be working. If you experience problems again please talk to the staff on duty so they can check your authentication process and the location of your work station
