Praise for PAD

More PAD tutors please - they are a brilliant resource but not enough of them

I want to thank you for the kind words you said about the  Professional Academic

Development (PAD) team (part of Learning Resources).  Your thoughts are important to us,

but we're especially pleased when the feedback is positive.

We try hard to provide the best possible service to our customers and their satisfaction is our

reward.  We are honoured to be part of your journey with the University of Bedfordshire

We really appreciate you taking the time to let us know we're doing something right.

Accessing electronic resources

Do I have access to Athens through your library? I am mainly using Dawsonera, but some newer books for pgce are not available at dawson?

Athens is an authentication system that allows you to access the electronic resources your

library subscribes to from anywhere in the world. You may have had an Athens username

and password at a previous institution to access the resources that library subscribed to.

Here at the University of Bedfordshire we use an alternative authentication system, the UK

Access Management Federation, which has superseded Athens in the Higher Education

community.

You might still come across Athens when talking to colleagues in other sectors such as the

NHS or other universities; this is because they have chosen to use Athens as their

authentication system. The main thing to remember is that Athens is not a collection of

resources; it’s just an alternative route to accessing the resource the University of

Bedfordshire subscribes to.

The UK Access Management Federation is an authentication system used by many

Universities that provides an alternative access route to the resources we subscribe to.

Some resources (Dawsonera ebooks, TRILT, ZETOC Alerts) can only be accessed using

this system.

Luton - returns unit

Why do I have to go downstairs to put the book in and come upstairs to pay a fine. Also no-one answers the telephone to speak about the books are out.

Learning Resources has a large number of self service facilities to help students manage their research needs and get the most from staff on duty. This means that routine activities such as: issuing and returning books, renewing items and paying fines may be done at any time you visit the LRC 24/7 365. A number of activites may be done remotely too.

Book returns - there is a fully automated returns unit on the ground floor of the LRC that will accept your returned items and issue you with a receipt.

If you have fines to pay you can check this by looking at your library account on a regular basis (good academic practice for a researcher) or you can read the detail on your "Returns Receipt" issued when you have your books returned.

Renewing loan items is an automated service

If you have any queries about your loans first check your library account which you can do on-line whenever you have an internet connection
library.beds.ac.u/patroninfo
sign in your your usual University username and password

You can see what you have on loan, if you have any fines, check to see if any reservations or Document Supply items are ready to pick up and, you can renew your books.

If you still have a query you may ring the LRC on:

Luton: Social Learning Space

I was wondering if there is a booking system underway for these hubs. I don't think it's fair that these spaces are first-come-first-serve; I try to arrange study groups for my class and it's almost physically impossible to get one of these spaces unless I get here at 9am.

Also, some students abuse the space by using it as a canteen, sometimes, only individuals are in there, sometimes for hours at a time when there are multiple spaces for individuals around campus and a booking system would ensure a more streamlined experience.

Thank you for your enquiry. There is no booking facility for the study space in the Social Learning Space of the LRC at Luton. I understand your frustration in not being able to find a space exactly when you want it but the first come first served facility works reasonably well. It is more equitable and flexible than having a booking service. The study space is for groups so if individuals are using the space please tell staff and they will get the individiual to move to a more appropriate place.

Social Learning Space - Luton Campus LRC ground floor: a learning environment specifically with group activities in mind

7 booths offering a PC, tabled seating and a whiteboard for groups of up to 7 people (offered on a first come first served basis)
sofa area for informal meetings
large laptop area divided by a variety of seating
As a group study area priority will be given to group activities. The only pcs available will be in the booths. This is a wifi area and laptop use is encouraged.

The Social Learning Space is the only area in the LRC where eating and drinking are allowed. There are appropriate disposal facilities but inevitably (especially around meal times) there may be a "canteen" feel to space.

The IT Suite has capacity for group work. The benches across the middle of the room are big enough for groups of 8 people. You can plug your laptop or USB into the display screen. The sofas with high backed acoustic baffles are also good for group work. There are power plug in for laptops in the table furniture.
There are drop in study rooms in the Campus centre as well.

BREO Updates

Team, I have just cleared approx. 250 updates from study hub on line which had been placed in my and doubtless many others Update section.in one fell swoop..Can this be stopped please !!!!!!!!! The updates look very interesting but a single document which perhaps just lists what is available to us would be much more straightforward.

Exasperated !

Oh my goodness how frustrating! It would seem that every time someone adds any new content/modifies existing content on the study hub: online these messages are added to the updates section automatically. Given the CST and the ALLs have recently added content this is why the number of updates is so high.

I have spoken to the Learning Technology team (who run BREO) to get them to investigate this further and see if this can be stopped.
