Luton Library - study environment

I would like to make a formal complaint about the noise levels in the library at Luton Campus.

On several occasions, I have been sat in the library (either in a room I booked for myself and my colleagues, or in the common areas), and I have been shocked at the amount of noise people are making.

I understand that some level of noise is normal, but people are playing music and are talking loudly to each other, which is very distracting. I also understand that there are certain ''quiet study areas'', however the walls are not nearly thick enough to cancel out the noise students are making outside of these facilities.

Both myself and my colleagues have previously asked other students to be quieter as we were working on our projects, but to no avail.

The library should be a place where students are able to work in a quiet environment, not for leisure (students have been known to circle around a single computer watching football matches or laughing at prank videos).

Perhaps there could be a way to report individuals to either security or to library staff when they make too much noise, after which a formal warning will be given (if this warning is not respected, the individual should then perhaps be removed from the library and denied access to the library for the remainder of the day. Repeated disturbance could perhaps even result in a temporary ban from the library for an extended period)

Thank you kindly for your time.

Thank you for your email complaining about the noise in Luton Library.

May I ask what your specific complaint is? There are a variety of study environments in Luton Library but the only silent areas are in the Silent Study Rooms on levels 4, 5 and 6

Quiet study areas are specified for the smaller campuses where there is no silent facility.

How individual students use the study space varies from person to person and whereas listening to music is not appropriate a lot of our media students are required to view, what may be described as leisure  films/programmes. Judging someone else’s activity while in the library is not appropriate. One person’s quiet is another person’s noisy.

If you have any specific complaints please notify staff at the customer service desk, or the security guard on later evening duty.

There is a library code of conduct
which includes sanctions for anyone not adhering to it.

Luton Library - Staff

Lovely staff as always!

Thank you for your kind words

Luton Library Staff

Very helpful and polite staff
Tea is a bit expensive at over £1

Thank you for your kind words about our staff

£1 compares quite favourably with high street tea shops

Opening Hours

Why has the library shut early from 21 - 23 June 2017. We external students have exams also and we want the library to be open 24 hours before this date please

24/7 restarts 2 October 2017. Until then the opening hours are
Monday - Froiday 08.30 - 02.00
Saturdays Sundays and August Bank Holiday Monday (28.8.17) 10.30 - 17.30

Prayer rooms

Suggestion that there should be prayer facilities available in the library - especially when they other building is closed. Muslims prayer 5 times a day. Jews pray throughout the day. Hindus pray throughout the day

Many thanks for your enquiry. I totally respect the religious practices of all students. However study space is a primary service in the library. As an academic institution the library does not offer prayer room facilities at any time of the year. The Multifaith Prayer and Quiet Room will be open as usual in the Treehouse.

Prayer Room

We would like a place where we can pray in the library as the Campus Centre is closed during the holidays. We are obliged to pray and this intervenes with our daily prayer

Many thanks for your enquiry. As an academic institution the library does not offer prayer room facilities at any time of the year. The Multifaith Prayer and Quiet Room will be open as usual in the Treehouse.

Community and Faith

Please provide a room where we will be able to pray during the holidays. As the Campus Centre is closed during this time and there are no praying facilities in the library.

Access

During night time some people are coming and going in the new library by using their friends ID cards who are studying in this University. Please take care of this. Those people are arguing with security whenever they get caught.
I saw some students are misbehaving with night security staff member. Disrespecting is increasing between humans. I don't understand why people are destroying humanity for their purposes.

Thank you for bringing security's good work to my attention I will be sure to pass this on. There are unauthorised people who occasionally try to get into the library security's intervention makes sure this doesn't happen.
If you have further concerns please contact student support

Access

Not allowed in with valid student ID

Thank you for raising your complaint. Please let me have the date and time you were refused entry and I will investigate further

Luton Library - Opening Hours

I want to make a complaint about the closure of the library. Many of us are doing our dissertation now and some of us have kids at home therefore distraction at home. I suggest that when the main library closes the IT Suite should be open so those who want to work (study) overnight can do so there. Thanks

Thank you for raising your concerns. In the middle of June the Library had very reduced opening hours. Student complaints led to a review of these hours and the VC extended the opening times to
Monday - Friday 08.30 - 02.00
Saturdays, Sundays and August Bank Holiday Monday (28.8.17) 10.30 - 17.30

https://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/opening/ps-lrc

The IT Suite is open
Monday - Friday 08.30 - 17.00
except for University exams when it closes (August 7 - 11 2017)

Luton Library Study Environment

I have been in the UK for more than 18 months and since I started studying in 5th 6th floor in the new library start feeling down because of less oxygen. Please take care of the ventilation system on library in 3rd,4th,5th 6th floor. Not all student have that stamina to study in oxygen less area as compare to ground floor the air is fresh. I am feeling bad for complaining about ventilation system I appreciate this university for providing us this facility but there is no fresh air which give me motivation to sit and study continuously

Thank you for sharing your concerns. Please be assured that the library works on a forced air system which draws air in from the roof and pushes it around the building through vents you may have seen in the floor. Circular silver coloured grilles? This system is typical of all sealed buildings and works very effectively. If you have concerns about oxygen levels please make an appointment to come and talk to me and we can look at the system in detail to reassure you.

If you have concerns about motivation to study may I suggest talking to Student Services
https://www.beds.ac.uk/student-experience/studying-at-bedfordshire/student-support

or the Study Hub

Alumnus - remote access query

When I last graduated, The Dean stated during our graduation ceremony that we would always have access to the Universitys online library services. I can no longer log in with my previous registration code. Can you please tell me why?

I sincerely hope this issue can be resolved; as this was our parting gift from the University (upon my third graduation from this particular University).

Many thanks for your enquiry.
I would suggest that this access was an incorrect memory. In 2015 some students were told that they would always have access to their Google Mail. Unfortunately this offer has had to be removed due to cyber security concerns.
There has never been an offer to continue access to e-resources after graduation as this would put the University in breech of licensing agreements with digital providers. There is limited access if you visit the Campus and access materials on site but graduates have never had remote access once they have graduated.
You may continue to access our website and the resources that offers but you cannot link to learning materials or items on the catalogue or DISCOVER.
I understand that you will be disappointed but there is no way round this.

Bedford Library Staff Praise

I really wanted to thank all of you before I completely finished my course and luckily, I could manage it as I got a job as well. I told my family and friends that I actually learnt more stuff in the library than through lectures!! And all the librarians have been so helpful and kind.

I'm sure I'll miss my favourite spot in the library and will remember when I wrote up one of the assignments after midnight during the Christmas break.

Alumnus Enquiry

I graduated fro your university in 2014. Now i need to access some information about "eugenics". I am looking for very old dictionary for this definition. Can you help please.

It will be very helpful if you can provide access to these content. I am researching on this term and need this information.
Many thanks for your enquiry. I regret to inform you that we cannot offer a personal research service to anyone.
May I advise you to join the library as an Alumnus and come in to do your research in person?

Opening Hours

I am a PhD student. My thesis submission date is 10th August 2017. Recently the change in timings has effected me a lot. I am not allowed to stay after 10pm which is affecting my writing. I do not have facilities in my home. I am experiencing delays in my writing due to these changes of timings.

I am very surprised to read this as there are no 22.00 closures. For two weeks early in June the library opening hours were severely reduced. The VC has changed this and since 27 June the opening hours have been
Mondays – Fridays 8.30 – 02.00
Saturdays and Sundays 10.30 – 17.30

Please tell me where you were asked to leave at 10pm and what date

Opening Hours

I am international student. I have seen many students who study at night but library is closed. In home study is hard

Thank you for your comments The VC has put in place improved Library summer opening hours at Bedford and Luton Libraries after the initial very reduced opening hours. Weekdays the libraries are closed for only 6 hours.

We have listened to student concerns and are now extending the opening hours for July, August and September.

From Tuesday 27th June at Luton and Bedford the library opening hours are
08.30 AM - 02.00 AM Monday to Friday
and
10.30 AM to 17.30 PM Saturday and Sunday and the August bank holiday.

A small reduction to opening hours in the summer ensures we are able to invest our resource where it will make the most difference to students during the rest of the year.

The usual 24/7 opening will be back from 2nd October and throughout the academic year including the Winter and Spring term breaks

Sconul Access

I am a taught postgraduate student at King's College London, I live in Bedford and I was wondering if I'd be able to use the library at Polhill Campus through the SCONUL Vacation Access Scheme? I don't need to borrow any materials, just need an internet connection and a quiet place to work.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Thank you for your enquiry.

Please check with  Kings on what your allowances are under the Sconul Access scheme. As a taught post graduate you would be normally allowed loan access to member institutions. Kings is best placed to answer this for you.

If you are on Eduroam at Kings that would work at our Bedford Campus Library. If not you may request a Guest WiFi password at the customer service desk.

If you wish to progress Sconul Access membership please see our information on our website. It’s a 2-part process. Part 1 where you apply to Sconul Access to join the scheme then Part 2 is where you apply to the institutions you wish to use.

Sconul Access

I have just completed my second year of study at the University of Northampton. In preparation for next years dissertation I was planning on starting some reading around my topic area and was suggested from my lecturer that university students can access books from other university libraries when at home for the summer. Is this something that the University of Bedfordshire offers and if so how do I go about taking out books from your library.

I live near Bedford and subsequently, borrowing books from your library would make more sense whilst I’m home over the summer.

Thank you for your enquiry.

Please check with  University of Northampton on what your allowances are under the Sconul Access scheme. Full time under graduates are normally allowed reference access to member institutions not loans. Northants is best placed to answer this for you.

If you wish to progress Sconul Access membership please see our information on our website. It’s a 2-part process. Part 1 where you apply to Sconul Access to join the scheme then Part 2 is where you apply to the institutions you wish to use.
