Luton Library - study environment

I would like to make a formal complaint about the noise levels in the library at Luton Campus.

On several occasions, I have been sat in the library (either in a room I booked for myself and my colleagues, or in the common areas), and I have been shocked at the amount of noise people are making.

I understand that some level of noise is normal, but people are playing music and are talking loudly to each other, which is very distracting. I also understand that there are certain ''quiet study areas'', however the walls are not nearly thick enough to cancel out the noise students are making outside of these facilities.

Both myself and my colleagues have previously asked other students to be quieter as we were working on our projects, but to no avail.

The library should be a place where students are able to work in a quiet environment, not for leisure (students have been known to circle around a single computer watching football matches or laughing at prank videos).

Perhaps there could be a way to report individuals to either security or to library staff when they make too much noise, after which a formal warning will be given (if this warning is not respected, the individual should then perhaps be removed from the library and denied access to the library for the remainder of the day. Repeated disturbance could perhaps even result in a temporary ban from the library for an extended period)

Thank you kindly for your time.

Thank you for your email complaining about the noise in Luton Library.

May I ask what your specific complaint is? There are a variety of study environments in Luton Library but the only silent areas are in the Silent Study Rooms on levels 4, 5 and 6

Quiet study areas are specified for the smaller campuses where there is no silent facility.

How individual students use the study space varies from person to person and whereas listening to music is not appropriate a lot of our media students are required to view, what may be described as leisure  films/programmes. Judging someone else’s activity while in the library is not appropriate. One person’s quiet is another person’s noisy.

If you have any specific complaints please notify staff at the customer service desk, or the security guard on later evening duty.

There is a library code of conduct
which includes sanctions for anyone not adhering to it.
