Luton IT Suite access during exams

Closing off the library computer area in teh Luton campus for a whole week instead of the duration of each exam is nonsense! I had to travel all the way to the Bedford campus just to get a computer. FIX IT!!

Thank you for bringing your concerns to my attention. I am sorry that you couldn't find any PCs overnight at Luton LRC during the exams. Although the IT Suite has a high concentration of PCs there are over 150  PCs on the other floors of the LRC. There was no evidence to say that all the other PCs were in use in the LRC so you easily have found an alternative study space.

It takes some time to set up the IT Suite for exams and it isn't feasible to take it down and put it back up on a daily basis.

I do understand that if the IT Suite is your favourite place to study you will be disappointed to find it closed but moving to another floor in the LRC is preferable to driving to Bedford Library to find a PC

Use of the IT suite for exams is publicised on the Luton LRC opening hours page of LRWeb
http://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/opening/ps-lrc

The last exam this week is today so the full ITSuite will open again at 2.30pm Wed 27 Jan but there are more exams next week so keep an eye on the information on LRWeb

Luton IT Suite access

Me and 2 others had to travel to Bedford Campus from Luton due to them closing the IT Suite for 5 days including overnight for exams, so there was no computers available to do work! They could of opened it overnight & felt the staff at luton was not hlepful with this problem

Thank you for bringing your concerns to my attention. I am sorry that you couldn't find any PCs overnight at Luton LRC during the exams. Although the IT Suite has a high concentration of PCs there are over 150  PCs on the other floors of the LRC.

eBook access

Sorry to bother you, I am trying to access the following ebook but it no longer seems to be available and am just enquiring if this ebook has been removed on a permanent basis or just temporarily.

Title: Cross-cultural psychology : critical thinking and contemporary applications  Author: Eric B. Shiraev, David A. Levy.

I am sorry you are having trouble accessing Cross Cultural Psychology by Eric Shiraev and David Levy 5th edition (Pearson Education) as an ebook.

We have purchased another copy which can be found on the VLeBooks platform provided by Askews and Holts. It does not yet have a library catalogue record, so to find it:-

Go to http://library.beds.ac.uk and click on the digital library tab. Please select VLeBooks from the Ebook collections drop down box.

Once you have logged in with your university username and password when requested, you can search for this book under quick search with the ISBN number 9781293055374. Alternatively, you can type the author’s surname – Shiraev.

You then should get the book record and click on the read online button.

Please note the book is one user at a time, so if someone else is reading it online you won’t get access until they finish, but we have ordered other copies, which should be ready within 24 to 48 hours. Best to use Shiraev as a search term to find these as they will have a different ISBN.

I hope this helps.

Luton - Silent Study levels 2 & 3

I wanted to email as I find it incredibly distracting in the silent study area of the library! The computers are poorly positioned infront of the doors with people in and out continuously talking! Bedford is much better with computers positioned around the outside to counteract that noise! However, Bedford is no longer accessable for me and this is the campus I am situated now. There is also a memeber of staff to ask other students to be quiet should they be in there having a full blown discussion particularly loud! This is not something I have experienced at this campus in the past 18 months. I contribute to this university and find it ridiculous I am unable to study!! particularly in my last year when I have a dissertation due!!

Thank you for taking the trouble to high light your concerns. PCs are naturally noisier that laptop or tablet use and the rationale for situating them near the door was to concentrate potential high level ambient noise in one area. The edges of levels 2 & 3 at Luton are distinctly quieter than the area immediately adjacent to the door. There are PCs in the side rooms and you may wish to consider working there.

Staff are timetabled to patrol the floors on an hourly basis - we do not have staff capacity to  locate a member of staff permanently on the silent floors. If fellow students are not observing the silence requirements it would be best to notify staff at the Customer Service desk on level 1 immediately.

Intercampus Request Service

I'm a part-time student living in Manchester and I rarely attend the university in person. Is it possible to have an intercampus photocopy delivered to my home? The online form only has a collection option.

Thank you for your enquiry. I am a bit confused the information on our web site says:
If its not in stock electronically but available in print at another campus request an intercampus electronic delivery reservation.
And
The article will be sent by email to your University email account. Check your account regularly to see if the email has arrived - we aim for delivery in 3 - 5 working days.
http://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/libraryservices/docsupply/intercampus

The form is not helpful I agree and I will endeavour to get it changed
For this request fill in the form agree to the 50p charge and in the lecturer field write
EMAIL DELIVERY

I hope that helps

Luton LRC - Cleanliness in the Library

On Level 1 park street the library section behind the books the windows are covered in cobwebs and spider and other insects some dead and alive. sometimes the alive one create webs from the window to the book shelf and people walk into it or the spiders start moving and students noisily react, which can be very distracting when trying to work. one experience I had for more than two hours a group of people were shrieking and making a big thing about the spider moving above them and if it was going to drop etc... since September the windows have been like this and it seems to be a distraction, as I too hate spiders and causes a distraction when other people react to them.

Thank you for emailing and taking the trouble to air your concerns. In cold wet weather insects do tend to come indoors for protection but this can build up into a nuisance if their activity is distracting.
I have raised your comments with our Cleaning team and hope they can get to the area you've identified to clear out the spiders.

Please remember that levels 2 and 3 are silent working floors and this environment may suit you better.

Luton - first floor temperatures

On the first floor of the library, it is freezing cold. There are many students who are wearing coats and scarves in order to stay warm. I was just wondering if it's possible to do anything about this?

Thank you for your comments. I am sorry you were uncomfortable on Sunday. There are cardboard thermometers throughout the LRC.  If the temperature anywhere in the LRC is above 19 degrees centigrade then that is an acceptable working temperature. If it is below 19 degrees centigrade please alert staff on the first floor Customer Service desk during staffed hours or, the security guard. If you cannot find a member of staff make a note of the temperature, date and time and either email to library.services@beds.ac.uk or use the Tell Us feedback

The temperatures varies significantly throughout the building so if you feel cold I would advise you to relocate to Park Street end or the Silent floors - which are generally warmer.

I will report your concerns to Facilities so they can investigate.

Luton IT Suite temperatures

I have occasionally used the library (ground floor)on a weekend and each time I have found it to be exceedingly cold.Sitting her now, it feels like the air conditioning is on. Despite wearing my coat, scarf etc, it is so cold that I am going to leave. I can overhear others saying the same.

Thank you for your comments. I am sorry you were uncomfortable on Saturday. There are cardboard thermometers throughout the LRC.  If the temperatures anywhere in the LRC is above 19 degrees centigrade then that is an acceptable working temperature. If it is below 19 degrees centigrade please alert staff on the first floor Customer Service desk during staffed hours or, the security guard. External customers

Just a quick question is the library open to the general public?

Thank you for your enquiry. The library isn't open to the general public in the same way Luton Central library is open to the public

It is open for members and we do have capacity for external members. Please look at the information on our web pages

I hope that helps

Problems with renewals

I'm not sure who to contact...however, I have been having trouble logging into my library account. I recently gave back 2 books as I was unable to log in to renew them, but I am still unable to log in via my home laptop, but in the university campus I have not trouble doing so, and I;m not quite sure what i should do regarding this matter.
