Billed items

From Twitter: i forgot about a book so have an overdue fine, i have a letter about book replacement but still have the book so what do i do?

Quite simply return the book. If your loans are more than 5 weeks overdue they become Billed Items. You will be issued with a replacement bill for the items you have on loan and your library account and network account will be blocked.
As soon as you return your loans the bill will be lifted and replaced with a fine. Your library and network accounts will be restored. So finally you just need to pay your fines.
All this information is on LRWeb: http://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/libraryservices/availableservices/borrowing/fines

Luton: Study environment

From Twitter: what is the point of a silent study area where people are talking?! #shutupI'm trying to study

First of all I would like to apologise for the inconvenience caused by this problem.

We take care to ensure that important matters such as this are properly managed and dealt with. It is most appropriate to speak to staff about this so they could do something about this on the spot. Overnight this would mean asking security for support.

Levels 2 & 3 of the Luton LRC are silent floors. No amount of talking is acceptable. Phone conversations are supposed to take place on the landing outside the lifts. I appreciate that when library staff are on duty you have reported noise problems directly. During staffed hours there are staff patrols approx every half hour and the area is electronically monitored for noise.

http://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/libraryservices/availableservices/study-env

Level 2 & 3  of Luton LRC are designated Silent Study at the request of the student body. Provision is made for group and social learning elsewhere in the LRC so there is an expectation for students to choose their preferred study environment and abide by the requirements of that space. This is harder to monitor overnight as the building is patrolled by security. Any student caught breaking the Silence requirement is allowed one verbal warning after that Library sanctions come into effect. Student behaviour was a key theme at the Student Union conference November 2013. This is a university concern which is being looked at by staff, students themselves and the Student Union

Action is taken towards anyone who disregards the silence requirement. I hope this reassures you. Please tell staff directly if you experience any further problems (which I hope you don't).

Bedford - study environment

I am doing ph.d over 3 years on Bedford campus, and often study in our library. I am very pleased that the library provide silent study room this year. Except these room, to be honest, there had been no place to study due to the horrible noise.

The silent study place should be supposed to be calm for everyone. However, often some are chatting with friends and then making a noise here. Even though I warned them to be quite sometimes, they did stop talking. There must be strict role for them, for example, no permission to access this room again if they interrupt other people several times and so on. or there are an urgent need to let them know the code of conduct here. They should learn what the library is for.

I do believe that  the atmosphere of library reflects the academic quality of university. I really love and support our library's efforts such as 24hour open system and the silent room, but it would be highly appreciated to manage the silent room more strictly for those who study and research hard.

Bedford - more PCs and lockers

I think uni need to get more computers or should get lockers in o4rder for student bring their laptops and still carry books Thank you

Thank you for your suggestions.

LockersYou are welcome to use your own laptop or tablet in the Library there are specific plug in power points available on every floor. If you cannot find any please ask staff on the Customer Service Desk (ground floor) for help. You cannot plug your device into the the University network so please use WiFi if required. At the moment there is no space provision for lockers in the Bedford Library. It is the kind of service enhancement we would like to offer and have looked into the possibilities of offering this as a service. Realistically we would explore the options in full as  capital budgets allow us to do so.

Bedford - Lockers

Some lockers please; my bag gets very heavy + some more computers on the second floor. I have my own lap top - but with the bag/books also??!!

Luton: temperatures

Please, the heater on 3rd floor(library) is not working due to this  I am feeling  cold and unable to ready very well

Thank you for raising your concerns with me. If you tell a member of staff they will check the temperature for you. The University tries to keep the study area in a  comfortable range of 19 - 23 degrees centigrade - which is recommended for office work.
If you find yourself getting cold you possibly need to move around to warm up and consider moving to a different area of the library to work there instead. Additional heaters or increasing the temperature settings for the floor is not possible when the temperature recorded is within the recommended range.

Internet failure Overnight 20.3.14

I had come into the library to work last night and the internet wasn't working, I couldn't log in to BREO snd other students couldn't log in at all. I have an assignment due in at midnight tonight 20/3/14 I stayed until nearly 3am and then gave up.

Security reported internet down from 00.45 - 02.55 last night

I am sorry that you experienced problems with logging onto the internet last night at Bedford library
The University's ICT department reports that: We noticed lots of failures too 12.30 - 02.30 and on checking our reporting tool it does seem that Virgin media did being down the WAN links early hours
The various network outages overnight occurred because of a connection problem with the Virgin Media link that supports the campus. This is completely out of the University's control and it is in the hands of Virgin Media to fix the problem.

Luton - PC reserving

Issue caused by students leaving library books as an acting reserve for logged off computers level 2 library

If books are left near a logged off PC this means someone is being untidy not that the PC is reserved for them. Stray books are gathered up by staff and re-shelved where necessary.

If someone has left personal belongings this is clearly not a safe thing to do and there is advice on LRWeb about this
http://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/libraryservices/pcsandsoftware

If a PC is left logged on and unattended for more than 30 minutes (as observed by staff

patrols), the PC will be shut down by staff. Any items of personal property will be taken to Lost

Property at main reception. Open files will be saved where possible. It is not advisable to

leave a PC logged on and unattended for any reason. It is possible that someone (other than

University staff) will take your things and inappropriately access your personal data

Luton - noise in Silent areas overnight

I am currently studying in year 3. I have spoken to library staff about the noise in the silent area levels 2 & 3 please make the noise stop. When security walk around they stop talking then start again.

Butterfield - behaviour

Should be less tolerance for negative behaviour. Rather than persistently criticising the whole group, reducing moral, speak to individuals and remove people if necessary that are repeat offenders more quickly.

First of all I would like to apologise for the inconvenience caused by this problem.

We take care to ensure that important matters such as this are properly managed and dealt with. It would be more appropriate if you spoke to staff about this so they could do something about this on the spot. Tell Us has a guaranteed response of 2 days so waiting that long is not really effective.

It is occasionally difficult for staff to identify individuals who are being overtly noisy. There is no silent study space at Butterfield and so individuals are expected to monitor their own behaviour. Each student of the University has their own learning style. This style may change as an individual progresses through academia or according to the assignment in hand. Some people like to work in noisy environments. Some people need to talk as part of their learning style. As a University of adults self monitoring is a part of that progression. One person's idea of quiet or silent is quite different to another. Setting a standard of behaviour when applied across 200 individuals the environment is not going to be quiet.

http://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/libraryservices/availableservices/study-env

If the opportunity to create a silent study space arises I can guarantee the University will utlise this. I have to say that this is unlikely given given the space envelope at Butterfield. Until then may I suggest that you use Luton LRC as it has 2 Silent floors and is open 24/7 365

Refworks

I am a Graduate research student and looking to get going with refworks. In particular I would like to know how to import citations from the university of bedfordshire library catalogue into my refworks account so that I do not need to enter everything in individually. I am sure that this information is somewhere online, but I am not really sure where to look or who to talk to.

Thank you for contacting me. I think the best course of action for you is to e-mail the Academic Liaiosn Librarians who look after your Faculty and get them to discuss your refworks queries. If you come into the University at all it would be useful to arrange a 121.

Your course is supported by Hilary Johnson and Adele Robinson - Academic Liaison Librarian

Systems down

I am paying £9K and I cant use the library facilities. The systems have gone down and we cant use anything. Also means I cant do any work and I have an essay to hand in. Its not on I want something done please get in contact

Thank you for your comment. Unfortunately on 24 Feb the University was experiencing problems with internet connectivity. This wasn't confined to the University as many business and domestic internet connections were experiencing problems that day.
Unfortunately as well as log ons this affected printing too. Mediated academic printing was offered when possible but I know the internet failure also affected staff PCs and printing too so that service was only available from time to time.
I do apologise for the inconvenience this caused you. I do agree that it isn't the standard of service we'd expect to provide. It is being looked into by the University's IT department to help avoid this happening again.

Small booking rooms

It would be very useful if we had smaller booking rooms for smaller groups. eg two people or individual rooms. I needed to do telephone supervision with my dissertation supervisor as we can't find a suitable time to get together as I am on placement most days. I need a quiet place in the University to talk to him on the phone

Thank you for this suggestion. I don't know which Campus you are based at so guessing at Luton or Bedford may I suggest:
Bedford: It is not possible within the the current library envelope, to introduce rooms as you describe although they do feature in our major redevelopment plans. The bookable room on the ground floor of the Library should suit this purpose so why not book it? The new Campus Building should offer these rooms but won't be available until 2015
Luton: small rooms will be a part of the new library opening 2015. Meanwhile drop in rooms are available in the Campus Centre and group rooms are available (first come first served) in the Social learning Space of the LRC

Numicon

Please can you get some more Numicon sets

Thank you for your suggestion. I will pass this to your Academic Liaison Librarian to see if it is possible.

Aylesbury LRC - Opening Times

Is there anything that can be done about bucks campus opening times because when on placement part of a nursing course and having to work 9-5 monday to friday it's difficult to get over before it closes and the bedford/luton 24/7 libraries are quite far if you don't have a car.

Thanks for your comment. I really sympathise with your situation. The LRC is open until 18.00 Monday to Friday. I appreciate getting to Luton or Bedford outside these hours (including weekends) is difficult without your own transport. Those resource centres are open 24/7 365

I will take your request to our Library Management team. All requests for changes to service provision are taken very seriously and discussed at the highest level.

I cannot make any promises but this request will be given serious consideration

Thank you for your comment. Unfortunately on 24 Feb the University was experiencing problems with internet connectivity. This wasn't confined to the University as many business and domestic internet connections were experiencing problems that day.

Bedford - Logging on

Logging on takes ridiculously longer than it should

Thank you for your comment. Logging onto a network PC will always take longer than logging onto a PC or mobile device at home. I do know that 24 Feb the University was experiencing problems with its internet provider so that would have exacerbated the length of the log on time. The problems around 24th Feb have been resolved now so log on times will have improved - they will not however - be instant.

Bedford - maximum loans

It would be helpful to have the maximum amount of books allowed displayed on the library screen. I made a special journey here but couldn't take my books as I add reached my maximum amount of 20 Thanks

I am very sorry you were inconvenienced over your library visit. The library management system feeds into your library account so you can check at any time you have on-line access, on how many books you have on loan
https://brum.beds.ac.uk/patroninfo
sign in with your normal University details
This account will let you renew any items, tell you if you have reservations to collect, whether you have any fines to pay and how many books you have on loan.
Library terms and conditions are availble on LRWeb
http://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/libraryservices/availableservices/borrowing
and in the Library Handbook which you should have been given at your induction or the start of this academic year. Additional copies are available to pick up in the Library at any time.
