Luton: helpful staff

Thanks for all sort of library help and I would say you guys are priests because library is knowledge temple so not a librarian. Importantly I learnt a lot academically and professionally from this place rather than class rooms.
Finally I am going to miss so much this wonderful library and team members. My best wishes for keep improving and my heartily wishes to everyone for Christmas and New Year.
I am always indebted to you people. Once again thank you very much

Bedford - PCs

Too few computers on second floor of library, beautifully quiet but pointless if you can't find anywhere to work. Why not move some up from the first floor where they are frequently unused but unpleasant area.

Thank you for your enquiry. As you know level 2 at Bedford Campus Library has become a silent study area. PC use creates noise so it was a conscious decision to move some of the PCs from level 2 to different floors. There are 22 PCs on that floor but there another 150 PCs on the other library floors. In addition there are 42 PCs in the Learning Hub. You are welcome to use your own laptop or tablet in the Library there are specific plug in power points available on every floor. If you cannot find any please ask staff on the Customer Service Desk (ground floor) for help. You cannot plug your device into the the University network so please use WiFi if required

There are a good proportion of PCs to students at Bedford. We rarely have no PCs left for customers to use. Please check all the library floors for available machines. We are hoping to introduce a PC booking service to make it easier for custom
ers to get a machine when they need it most. Please check the banners on LRWeb for news of this development in the next few months.

Luton - Study environment

The university has gradually rolled out incremental improvements to the Luton park square campus over the years. As a Luton resident for nearly all my life I've seen these, and now am witnessing them internally as a student of the university.

The areas downstairs have seen a great improvement; I was honestly blown away when I saw just how much of an improvement the lower floor of the library had seen.
As a student I can see how much money has been spent in rejuvenating these areas of the university - these changes reinforce my choice to study at the university in the first place.
However, as a mature student I feel reluctant to use these facilities - due to the fact that similarly as with the social study space - not many students actually use this space for academia. Most of the time when I go by there it's more like a playground, loud and disruptive and not an environment conductive for any kind of meaningful learning. I understand that students do require a space to collaborate on their work, and this cannot be achieved in silence, however there needs to be some kind of control. What is the use of spending millions on improvements when the students can't use these bright and fresh new areas for anything other than messing around?
If there was some kind of a presence within these areas, during peak times only to monitor the room and ensure it doesn't get too out of control, I'm sure it would go a long way to improving these environments for the benefit of other students.

My other comment regarding the library, is the silent study areas on the top floor.
I often get distracted at home, and when I feel as though I've been particularly slow with coursework I head to the library to knuckle down properly.
I can spend hours in the library producing quality work. There are signs everywhere constantly reminding students that this is a silent study area, however in the past couple of weeks I've witnessed groups of students using this area as a meeting point.
Even with headphones on, I can still hear people whispering behind me. Going to the library for me is a last resort often - I struggle with my concentration, so make the 40 minute walk into town to the uni library and have a quiet atmosphere to work in.
It is incredibly frustrating for me to make this walk in, only to have groups of people whispering or talking quietly around me constantly.
I'm not sure how the sound monitors work within the library, or if there is someone assigned to each floor to monitor students - but it would be good if students were told to go elsewhere if they need a social environment.

So essentially, I find the facilities at the university to be excellent, for me it's certain students who are disruptive and certainly cause me issues.

Thank you for sharing your positive comments about the improvements made to the study spaces in the LRC. Its really great to know that we're doing something right.
I would like to reply to each of your concerns
Ground floor LRC: The Social Learning Space and the refurbished IT Suite were specifically developed as direct responses to  the teaching needs of the University. Virtually every course of study has an element of group work that requires appropriate space for students to work together. Each student of the University has their own learning style. This style may change as an individual progresses through academia or according to the assignment in hand. Some people like to work in noisy environments. Some people need to talk as part of their learning style. As a University of adults self monitoring is a part of that progression. One person's idea of quiet or silent is quite different to another. Setting a standard of behaviour when applied across 200 individuals the environment is not going to be quiet. Both these areas - nonetheless - have quiet peroids. I would advise you to look out for early mornings (before 11am) and later in the afternoon for opportunities to work in these spaces when there is a more moderate level of noise.
Silent Study floors: level 2 & 3 of Luton's LRC are designated Silent Study floors at the request of the student body. Provision is made for group and social learning elsewhere in the LRC so there is an expectation for students to choose their preferred study environment and abide by the requirements of that space. The Silent floors are monitored electronically and this is backed up by staff patrols - during staffed hours. Any student caught breaking the Silence requirement is allowed one warning after that Library sanctions come into effect. Student behaviour was a key theme at the recent Student Union conference. This is a university concern which is being looked at by staff, students themselves and the Student Union

Butterfield: PAD, PCs & Referencing

PAD could be put at Butterfield campus.

More computers would be good as they are always in use or unavailable.

Make sure hard copy referencing guide (given to me in first year) matches the web guide

PAD: Students can travel into the other drop ins and workshops
http://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/help/pad/drop-in
offered at other Campuses. The calendar of events is here:
http://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/help/pad/events

If individual or small groups  cannot get to any of the events on offer you need to contact PAD and they will attempt to arrange something around your availability

PCs: I am sorry that you have been experiencing problems with access to the PCs  at Butterfield. As you know there is very limited space at Butterfield. Over the summer all the PCs in Learning Resources were replaced with Intel i5 PCs. The Learning Resources team also managed to squeeze in 4 more PCs taking the total to 16 at Butterfield. We are hoping to introduce a PC booking service to make it easier for customers to get a machine when they need it most. Please check the banners on LRWeb for news of this development in the next few months.

Referencing: The LRweb guide to referencing gives general examples in the University of Bedfordshire Harvard style for students.  The Faculty of Health and Social Sciences has their own guide to referencing (i.e. the paper version you were given) but some courses in the Faculty use other systems too.  It is your individual responsibility to check that they are using the correct referencing system for each unit (with your tutor) as there is no unified system of referencing across the university.

DISCOVER

I am unable to sign into DISCOVER on from the UOB website. I tried using my breo login details and it did not work. Do I need to sign up to access it?
Also how do I access ieeexplore through breo? please can you send e the link.

You need to use DISCOVER or the library catalogue directly to search for resources. There is a link from BREO to LRWeb or you can go directly to LRWeb (Learning Resources website) where there is a search box on the front page:
Type your search term in the search box under the word DISCOVER and click SEARCH

To authenticate when you go into DISCOVER to need to type your usual University username and ID

There doesn't appear to be anything wrong with your library account so if you experience any further problems please ring Learning Resources during staffed hours or visit the Customer Service desk and we'd be happy to talk through the problem

If you specifically want to search IEEE, Log onto the library catalogue Click on the Digital Library tab

From the Ejournal field use the drop down arrow to reveal a list of journal collections. IEEE is there. Click on that.
When you are asked to authenticate use your usual University username and password

Aylesbury PCs

Computers, old, and slow

All Learning Resources PCs were swapped out this summer. Students came back in September to brand new faster intel i5 PCs. As the PCs are networked inevitably they take longer than a home PC to log on.
Please report your specific problems to the staff at the Customer Service desk and they will try to help you

Past exam papers

I am trying to look at pass dissertations papers for Computer Science and Technology department.

Can you tell me how find these papers via the library catalogue?

Thank you for your enquiry. May I suggest that you:

Log onto the Advanced Search page of the library catalogue

Fill in the search bar either with
Unit code (most effective)
department

In the Limit to field pull down the drop menu and select Exam papers
Just to the right of this is the word Submit
Click on this and you should get the results you need.

If not please contact your Academic Liaison Librarian

Luton - Business Books

Library resources not enough, few text books, reservation system is not working properly.

Thank you for your comment I understand your frustration in trying to source resources for your work and the items are out on loan. This is compounded if there is a waiting list for the items you put reservations on.
The Academic Liaison Librarians for your course are Avtar Natt and Alan Bullimore

They have created a new books for Business list for you to look at to check on the new titles coming into stock. Please follow this link
then click on "Business"
They have also created a Subject Guide which is very useful when planning your work:

Last year the University made a significant additional investment in Library materials which has provided more print copies of core essential reading The investment also purchased more e books to provide wider reading around your subject..
http://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/libraryservices/news/Books
If you having problems finding materials for your studies I would advise you to contact your Academic Liaison Librarian urgently. We need ensure you are using the most effective search strategies to find resources
Journal articles should also be used for latest information on marketing, if you cannot get the print materials you want why not limit your catalogue searching to e-books ?  Book an appointment with your Academic Liaison Librarian and they will explore these options with you. An order for 14 significant business ebooks was put on yesterday – so they should be in stock after Christmas.
Regarding your comments on the Reservations service: first of all I apologise for the inconvenience caused by these circumstances.
We take care to ensure that important matters such as this are properly managed, although on this occasion we clearly have not succeeded in meeting your expectations.
In light of this we have decided to review our sanctions regime with all the stake holders. This may take some time - so I cannot offer an immediate solution but we would like to have a long term effective solution to this problem We hope this is acceptable to you.
As a Masters student you are expected to buy a few books for University yourself. Learning Resources does buy multiple copies of core texts
I would advise you to contiunue making use of the Reservation service to ensure you get to borrow the core texts
In addition you might like to know that the University is undertaking a medium term project called readinglists (readinglists.beds.ac.uk)to change the focus and role of reading lists from just a list of citations to a more relevant and accessible document.  A reading list should tell you what you should be reading and when during your course and as far as possible making that material accessible to you.  We are working towards the latter either by obtaining in full text (the whole book or a chapter or article) and making it available on BREO or ensuring we have acceptable numbers of print copies in the library using appropriate loan statuses to try and ensure everyone on the course has the opportunity to access and use the book when they need to

Education - New books list

A blog, newsletter and/or Tweet (preferably not the latter - I'm too old!) of new library acquisitions, ideally selectable by location (Bedford, Luton etc) would be useful so one could look for them specifically on next visit to the library.

Thank you for your enquiry. If you follow this link
http://library.beds.ac.uk/ftlist
you will see a list of new books bought by Learning Resources arranged by subject. Education and Sport has its own entry on the list. There are 107 new titles currently on this Education list. If you browse through and click on any title you like this will take you to a catalogue record. This will tell you which Campus the book is stored at and whether its available for loan.

Your Academic Liaison Librarians Adele and Hilary
http://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/help/ALLs/Adele_Robinson
http://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/help/ALLs/Hilary_Johnson
have put a lot of useful material for Education students up on LRWeb. Check it out it might be useful to you

Computer Skills Workshops

I am interesting to develop my skills in Ms excel, word and power point. I have been told by my personal tutor to contact you and attend a session for workshop.

As I want to start from basic Please inform me when the fundamental workshops are taking place.

Thank you for your enquiry. If you go on to LRWeb and check the Computer skills calendar you will see what workshops are available on your Campus

Bedford - specialist editing software

Had access to Mac Pc's at the Bedford Pohill Campus for Music and Movie editing software not available on normal windows PC's. Access would benefit many units across many courses and years and help us complete a higher standard of work.

Thank you for your enquiry. I understand your frustration in the fact that the Music and Movie editing software you require does not work on Window XP. The software needs the 64 bit version of Windows 7 to run
Regarding MACs there are disadvantages with these machines when they are networked - not least the fact that they cannot access the U drive on the student network. None the less Learning Resources is waiting hear the outcome of a bid for some MACs for the Bedford Campus. Unfortunately we do not have a timescale for this.
The University will be moving to Windows 7 sometime 2014 and the software will work on this on all LR's machines. I am sorry there is nothing more I can do at this stage.

Reservations - waiting lists

Been waiting for a reserved book - can't you enforce stronger sanctions on students so they return books on time?

First of all I apologise for the inconvenience caused by these circumstances.

Bedford - group work

More area to do group work

Thank you for your comments. The University recognises group work across many areas of its taught courses and so Learning Resources makes good provision at Bedford Library to accommodate this. Some of the rooms are bookable so I would advise you to use this service if you have a deadline pending. At Bedford Campus Library there is group work provision:

  • ground floor 2 group study rooms (bookable)
  • level 1 group study area
  • level 3 Teaching Practice room
Please ask staff at the Customer Service desk on the ground floor for assistance - particularly if you need to need to book a room for your group.

Study space and laptops for loan

Make an individual study box for students also give them laptops for rent, only for the use in uni. As these services also provided by one of the University in London.

Thank you for your suggestions. I am sure you have tried out the study space in the IT Suite, if you haven’t may I recommend that you do?
There is a variety of study furniture to meet individual requirements  in the IT Suite. The furniture on offer includes a single Vitra study desk (in orange or black) some with laptop plug in power sockets some with University PCs.
On the other LRC floors there is seating for over 900 people. There are some individual study carrels on levels 2 & 3 the silent floors, and some on shared desk space elsewhere. To accommodate all of our thriving University community individual study boxes are not an option in the space that we have available. The teaching style of the University requires Learning Resources to offer group and social learning spaces and they have to be given as our priority.

Laptops to rent suggestion: University of Bedfordshire offers approximately 1 PC per 20 students through Learning Resources. Desktop PCs offer a more stable connection to the internet and a wider range of products for a large number of users. WiFi use is available throughout the University but is subject to connection variation when there is heavy customer demand. Investment in laptops for loan is being considered and a project may come to light in the next couple of years.

Research assistance

Am asking for appointment to assist me for my I T assignment on research approach on qualitative.

As a Health and Social Care student I would advise you to e-mail your Academic Liaison Librarian - in the first instance - for help. Please let Alan Wheeler know your availability so he can check his diary to make an appointment with you

You may wish to go to a PAD drop in to discuss how to handle qualiative data. Please check their upcoming events

If you would like some IT training please contact our Computer Skills team or check their calendar to see what events are coming up

In the meantime there is a wealth of information for you on LR Web to help you with your studies

Luton - small library

Library is too small, please purchase more books for us

The Luton LRC covers four floors. Its a very welcoming and spacious environment. Learning Resources offers a range of services aimed at supporting your studies while you are at University.
Over 300 PCs are provided at Luton LRC which offer access to a wide range of applications including Microsoft Office, email and the Internet as well as a wide variety of information resources including:
4,000+ ebooks
280,000+ books
30,000+ ejournals
1,200+ print journals
80+ databases
University past examination papers since 1999
edissertations via the University repository
If you are not sure how to find your way around please ask staff at the Customer Service desk on level 1 for a tour. They would be very happy to show you round.

Luton - PCs

The computer is not enough for busy time.

Learning Resources offers approximately 1 PC for every 20 students on Campus. At Luton LRC it is very rare for every PC to be in use. There are 180 PCs in the ITSuite and some MACs and over 100 PCs in the rest of the LRC with a few other MACs on level 1 as well.
You are welcome to use your own laptop or tablet in the Library there are specific plug in power points available on every floor.
If you cannot find any please ask staff on the Customer Service Desk (level 1) for help. You cannot plug your device into the University network so please use WiFi or Eduroam if required. eBooks

Should get more e-books than the hard copy from library

Thank you for your comments. It would be marvelous if every book published had an eversion. Sadly this is not the case. Where ever possible Learning Resources buys eversions of the primary texts needed by our courses of study. We are however limited by the range of titles made available by publishers as eversions. The University of Bedfordshire is expanding its range of e resources year on year. At the moment the University of Bedfordshire is proud to stock: 4,000+ ebooks; 30,000+ ejournals; 80+ databases; University past examination papers since 1999; edissertations via the University repository.

Luton - Business books

Nice experience. But sometimes we do not get much books in the library. PMBOK, APMBOK are not available. These should be made available. Overall, the university has impressed me.

I am delighted that you are having a great student experience here at the University of Bedfordshire. We really appreciate you taking the time to let us know we're doing something right.  We look forward to serving you in the future.

As a post graduate student you are expected to buy a few books for University yourself. Learning Resources does buy multiple copies of core texts I would advise you to make use of the Reservation service to ensure you get to borrow the core texts

Luton - Business books

There should be adequate supply of text books so that they are available at any time and can be borrowed for a reasonable length of time. Smetimes, we are advised to pruchase books. For example, we have to purchase a book written by Clegg et al at the cost of £43, which is sometimes difficult for us..

Last year the University made a significant additional investment in Library materials which has provided more print copies of core essential reading The investment also purchased more e books to provide wider reading around your subject.
