Aylesbury LRC

It would be lovely if students were informed that librarians would not be available half the day. E.g. today no librarians were available at Aylesbury campus until 14.30. I arrived on campus at 13.10 and needed access to trust guidelines (that librarians has on compact disk) however had to wain 1.5 hours and due to personal reasons I was then unable to get my work done. Also would be nice if printers on campus in Aylesbury were fixed, so they can print instead of just taking off credit.

Thank you for your comments. Staff were on duty at 13.10 Monday 17th so I am baffled as to why you didn't get assistance then. At 13.30 a notice was clearly displayed on the customer service desk stating that staff would be on duty again at 14.30

If you need help with resources please contact your Academic Liaison Librarian David Abdy
https://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/studyhub@library/what-is-study-hub/study-hub-teams/ALLs/david-abdy
David has created some online resources to help you
https://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/health
And there is the Health Care Academic Skills Community on BREO
https://breo.beds.ac.uk/webapps/blackboard/content/listContent.jsp?course_id=_60276838_1&content_id=_2479336_1

Your print issue is related to a particular document from the clinical skills website which produces a certificate. This can only be printed from the web page and is not A4 so the printer asks for a different tray.
All you have to do is press Continue on the printer and the document will print.
I know you spoke to the library staff about your printing but you didn't mention that your print account had been erroneously debited in the computer room (I know you got your printing from the main library printer). If this is the case please talk to library staff next time you are on Campus so they can check your print history.

Sconul Access

I’m sorry to bother you about this but I received an error message saying the libraryideas@beds.ac.uk account isn’t working when I sent the below email to that mailbox.

I’m planning to drop into the Bedford library for a day or two between Christmas and new year to work on an essay I have to write for a coaching course I’m doing through work, and plan to use SCONUL access. I wanted to check the security staff would be able to let me in if I took the required SCONUL paperwork.

Thank you for your enquiry. The library ideas email is down because we are having a software upgrade. This does not affect the Sconul Access application process.

You need an email of authorisation and Brunel should have information on this. Once you have that email you may apply to any library in the Sconul Access scheme but you do need to check with each institution on their access arrangements. At University of Bedfordshire we have swipe access and so a membership process is necessary.

The information for Visitors is on our website –LRWeb.

and here (paragraph Free Schemes for Students from Other institutions)

I have to tell you that you will not be allowed in without a valid membership card. There is a notice on our web pages stating
SERVICE NOTICE: Due to volume of demand and Christmas vacation
7 December - 7 January no new Visitor applications will be processed. Processing will start again 7 January 2019 and take up to 15 days.
Allow a maximum of 15 working days for your application to be processed. Please be patient. Visitor enquiries on Campus will only be dealt with in person at ground floor reception week days 10.00 - 14.00. We do not give status reports on your application's progress. There are no IDs available on demand.
We advise posting applications with the necessary passport style photo.

Post Graduate Document Supply

The 'Inter Library Loan' request form is very hard to find on the library website.

Thank you for your enquiry. I am sorry you are having problems with our Document Supply service. As a post graduate you will have been told in your induction that University of Bedfordshire's Document Supply service includes inter library loans. This information is also in the online subject guide which supports your area of study

https://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/english/staff

If you type Document Supply into the search bar on the front page of LRWeb you will get to the section all about Document Supply
https://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/libraryservices/using-the-library/docsupply

If you type interlibrary loans in the search bar on the front page of LRWeb the 4th result will take you to the document supply suite of pages

Sconul Access

I am writing to ask if I have to come in to get a new library card as I had one last year i took a picture of but it noe does not work for this year.  My open university library  no is X  and library bed uni is a1116847  can you let me know if I am to come in for one or will it be sent.

Thank you for your enquiry. Your Sconul Access card expired in June 2017.

If you are still eligible to use the scheme and have a valid email of authorisation please apply for renewal in January 2019 . Please supply your old University of Bedfordshire library membership card with your application.

University of Bedfordshire will not be processing any new applications to Sconul Access until 7 January 2019. I strongly advise you to apply then. This will enable you to take advantage of the scheme at Easter and the  summer holidays - and between times should you wish.

Sconul Access

I’m emailing you as the Head of Reader Services in hope that you could help me resolve this issue.

I applied for Schonul university library access back in October and was planning to come on Monday 17th December to register for visitor access to the Bedford Campus library over the my university Christmas vacation from 17th December-12th January.

However, unfortunately I just checked the library website and it states that no new visitor applications will be processed until the 7th January.

I was wondering if on this occasion, my application on 17th December could be processed as I applied so much earlier on Schonul without realising about the extra Bedford library application and really need to make use of the library facilities for my dissertation?

I’m ever so sorry for any inconvenience this may cause, if needs be I can email over the application form and a passport photo prior to Monday.

Thank you for your enquiry. When you say you applied to Sconul Access in October do you mean you applied for authorisation to use the scheme? I have no record of you applying to use University of Bedfordshire via Sconul Access.

Nottingham will have advised you to get authorisation then apply to the individual institutions you wish to use.

You are correct University of Bedfordshire will not be processing any new applications to Sconul Access until 7 January 2019. I strongly advise you to apply then. This will enable you to take advantage of the scheme at Easter and the  summer holidays - and between times should you wish

Library misuse

The library services are amazing however the students playing ping pong in the library are disruptive

Thank you for your kind words. I am surprised that anyone is playing ping pong in the library if you can give me details of time date and location I can check with staff and security. Should it ever happen again please tell staff or security

Sconul Access

I am studying at the university of Nottingham and have recently applied for the SCONUL access scheme to allow me to use the library at the University of Bedfordshire. My application has been successful, but I’m am not too sure on what to do next. I finish on the 14th of December. Do I have time to make a library card as the university is closed for Christmas?

Thank you for your enquiry. Nottingham should advise you to review information on host web pages. University of Bedfordshire information is here

I would advise you to note this information

Sconul Access

Can you let me know if the UOB is a member of the SCONUL access scheme as I have a student here at the Birmingham Campus who wishes to use the Leicester campus. I don't know how that would work in practice, with out students only having lectures at this facility.

Thank you for your enquiry. University of Bedfordshire is a member of the SCONUL ACCESS scheme. All University of Bedfordshire students who are in good standing with the library service may apply to use the Sconul Access scheme. The level of membership is dependent on the student's level of study.

All the details are on our website (always a good first stop for information)
https://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/libraryservices/using-the-library/visiting-other-libraries

Application for authorisation is an online automated process and needs to be done first. Once the email of authorisation has arrived the student uses that to authenticate each application to institutions ton the scheme. All students are advised to check with each institution what is required locally as they all vary.

Use of teaching rooms

I am an MBA student. Today we assigned a room in Library LM108. The temp there was too cold, we just complained about it to the staff there but unfortunately she was rude to us and kicked us out of the room

Thank you for your enquiry. Students are not allowed to use LM108 at any time without a lecturer or member of the Study Hub team. You were not being kicked out of the room because you complained of the cold LM108 is not available for student use outside staff bookings. I am sorry if the member of staff was perceived as being rude but its understandable that you might think that if you were being asked to do something you didn't want to do
Students may book any of the 8 group study rooms in Luton Campus Library but L108 is not one of them

Our final year event management group work for organizing an event in campus on 4th of Febraury. My group event is a charity event for people with visual impairment. For promoting the event, we need to make posters and print them.

I'm wrriting this email to ask you about poster printing. Could you please tell me how can we print our poster in the library? How many poster could we print? And the poster's seize.

Thank you very much.Looking forward to your reply.

Thanks for your enquiry. The maximum size for printing in the library is A3

Colour single sided A3 30p

Renewals

I have books which are overdue but the system will not allow me to renew them. Could you please advise?

Thank you for your enquiry. The reason that you cannot renew your books is that all 20 items are overdue and past the grace period for renewals .

You need to manage your loans by making a note of the due dates and renewing the items on line on that date. I would advise using the calendar on your phone or if you have a paper diary make a note there.

The instructions for renewing your books are on our website here

You seem to be a strong library user and I would encourage you to reinforce this by keeping an eye on your library account. As your books are due back on different dates it is essential that you keep a note of the dates items are due back or regularly check your library account.

Please go to your library account

then sign in with your usual username and password. You will see all your loans. Make a note of the due dates so you remember to go back in to the account to renew the items that are due back.

I hope this helps

Athens

Please can you tell me how I can login to athens to retrieve a journal article?

Thank you for your enquiry. Athens is an authentication tool . It is not a separate set of resources. At the University of Bedfordshire we use Shibboleth.
Using the library catalogue or DISCOVER you just sign in with your usual University username and password to access materials

I would strongly advise you to contact your academic liaison library to get some research advice.

David has prepared some online advice which may be useful

If the material you want is not in the University’s collection as a post graduate you may use the Document Supply service details are here:

If your course includes placement in a NHS Trust (or you are employed by a Trust attending University part-time) you may be eligible to use materials from NICE Evidence please enquire at the librry Customer Service desk.

I hope this helps

Using other libraries

As I am aware I have finished my registration and get my ID card and I have already started my course. I don't know from where this error has come from. would you please contact the admission office to re check. because I have an assignment due this Friday and I would like to use Wolverhampton facilities so I can be able to finish it on time.

Thank you for your enquiry. I must confess to not understanding what your issue is. Please could you let me know what the problem is more directly?

If you are trying to get Sconul Access authorisation read the information and follow the link here

Luton Library noise

There's too much noise in the library. Please find a way to control noise within the library. Phones are ringing and people are answering phones and talking all the time. At least mobile calls should be banned in the library. Phones should be on silent mode

Thank you for your comments. I am sorry that you cannot immediately find the study environment you want. The library has a variety of study spaces so by definition some areas will always be noisy. There are no silence requirements enforceable for these areas.

https://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/opening/ps-lrc

There are plenty of spaces that offer silent study namely the Silent Study Rooms on levels 4, 5 & 6. These have the specifications noted in your comments. Please relocate to one of those rooms. I am sure they will meet your study style.

Resources

  1. Is it possible to arrange access to electronic resources via https://www.igi-global.com/ which is excellent for the use in IT, Software, Hardware and Networking fields. I am too broke to pay £1800 per book (3 in total) in the "Wireless Technology (ISBN13: 9781613501016)" or £30 per chapter.

Luton - study environment

I am increasingly disgusted at the state of the desks and keyboards in the library. They look like they have not been cleaned in ages and are so filthy that there are times when i have to wipe them off before I am able to start work.

In addition to the general dirt, this morning I booked L410 for a group study session. Of the 6 PCs in the room, 3 had log in screens available.the other 3, (L410-001; L410-005 & L410-004) had screens that would not turn on or showed no vidoe input and L410-006 had a keyboard with broken 'feet'.

Whilst I appreciate that the desks and PCs can not be repeatedly cleaned throughtout the day, please could you explain why the library facilities look like they ahve not been cleaned in weeks? Please coul you also pass on to the relevant IT support team the issues mentioned regarding computer accessibility.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you for raising your concerns. May I reassure you the library has a cleaning programme to maintain the study environment and it has a code of conduct to guide customers as to what is regarded as acceptable behaviours.

This is a  joint effort to keep the library in excellent condition. Unfortunately there are a few customers who do not take these requirements seriously. There are sanctions in place where necessary

I am disappointed to read about the PCs in L410 I will report this fault and get it resolved. In the unfortunate event you come across any equipment that doesn't work in the library please report it to the Customer Service desk on level 1 so something can be done about it straight away.

Are you using DISCOVER or the library catalogue to find materials? If you are not then you explicitly need to use either of these tools to give you access to the material you need. Do not Google it.

If you are on Campus today I would advise you in the strongest term possible to attend the Study Hub drop in

Self Issue Machines

Hello, I would like to comment on the system of borrowing books electronically. Is it possible to make it more simple. I have experience a few time of trying to input passport in to borrow library books which turned out that I could not be log in because of typo error as the screen is touch sensitive. Could I suggest a finger print to log in to borrow books instead of using a password?

Thank you for your comments and suggestions. University of Bedfordshire is on the cutting edge of self service library functions. Finger print log ins are not widely available for large institutions - although some schools do have a version of this. Universities need a robust process that will operate without staff for large numbers of people. Please persevere and I am sure small typos will be a thing of the past.

Luton Library - temperatures

The library is too warm too work in currently. Could something be done about this please?

The library suffers from being too hot for some students and too cold for others. There is a lot of temperature variation between floors so I would encourage you to find another cooler spot as the library adjusts to our rather unseasonable weather

Sconul Access

I hope someone can help me. I’m a part time masters student at the university of Edinburgh but I live in Bedford. A friend of mine told me that I may be able to use the library facilities as Bedford Uni because of a shared school scheme. I’ve asked at my university but they said I have to speak to someone at Bedford to find out if you do.
I wondered if someone could direct me to someone who knows if I can use the facilities?

Thank you for your enquiry. If Edinburgh is part of the Sconul Access scheme you can use that to gain free access. Ask Edinburgh about getting authorisation from the scheme and then follow our processes to gain membership at our Bedford Campus Library

Luton Study Environment

i'm writing to bring your attention it's continuously for a week people (one or two ladies) are very noisy on the ground floor every afternoon. We're working on M floor but their voice are highly pollution in this library building. Please take a look and hope we are working in a library not a market.

Thank you for your enquiry. I am sorry that you cannot find the study environment you want on the mezzanine floor. It is an open area over the library reception and so it will always be noisy. There are no silence requirements enforceable for these floors.

The only spaces that offer quiet or silent study are the Silent Study Rooms on levels 4, 5 & 6. Please relocate to one of those rooms. I am sure they will meet your study style better than the mezzanine.

Bedford PCs

I have issues at Bedford library with pcs being really slow to log in and when trying to print printers are not available or it has the wrong printer.  This has been occurring since last year

Thanks for your enquiry apologies for any inconvenience caused. Please can you tell us what PC you were on so we can investigate? If you ask at the Customer Service desk the Technical support team will come down and try and sort any issues quickly.

Using resources

I need more support in the library. I’m fine with finding library books it’s the journals I’m struggling with the journals. My tutor said he wants us to use journals for our essays but I don’t really know what I’m doing or how to find a journal I have asked but he didn’t really explain properly. Can you help me please?

Thank you for contacting me. The immediate help I can direct you to includes
Study Hub Drop ins

Online study hub resources

Your academic liaison librarian - Janine Bhandol - will help you with specific use of psychology journals. She has created some online support for your subject

I suggest that you explore all of these options to find the one that suits you.

Alumnus Membership

I’m an alumni and I was looking at the options for joining the library.

I see there is an option for £30 that allows me to borrow books. However, I’m preparing to start a masters at UoB next year and I was wondering if this included access to the online journals?

Thank you for your enquiry. Although the information on our web page clearly states

There is no remote access to digital resources for UK or overseas alumni.

There is access to a limited range of digital resources on campus only via guest wifi and your own laptop/tablet/pnone

You do not need borrowing status (£30pa membership) for this

I hope this helps

Sconul Access

I did not understand how to use the access. I did give up as no one explained to me how I would use it. I started back at the University of Bedfordshire on the 1 of October. I was then told that I should print the email that was sent to enable me to go to the south bank which is walking distance from London Bridge and if there is a University near to Elephant and Castle would you please be kind enough to send me details on my bed's account.

Thank you for your enquiry. All the information you need is on our website
https://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/libraryservices/membership/students2

You should have received an email from the Sconul Access scheme giving you authorisation to apply to Universities in the scheme for Reference membership. You need to take this email as a print out or on your phone to any institution you wish to use and ask them what their access arrangements for Sconul Access students are. You can check before visiting by visiting their websites

I hope this helps

Luton Library - study environment

Silent areas are noisy. Students talk on mobile phones and listen to loud music I complained to staff on 6th floor but said cannot do anything as student will abuse and be disrespectful

Luton Campus Library has silent study rooms on level 4, 5 & 6 their use is dependent on being silent. Sanctions are in place for non compliance, The rest of 4, 5 & 6 are not silent however and you cannot expect them to be. I am very concerned that you were told by staff that they would not assist you please send me details of date and time of this incident and I will follow it up.

Bedford Library - rolling stack

The Library needs to get the Literature rolling stack working, it's a massive inconvenience and is hindering Literature lectures; especially as shops are out of many books due to demand. Literature students NEED BOOKS!

Unfortunately due to an electrical fault the Bedford rolling stack has been out of order for a week. It has been reported and a part is now on order. It may a little while longer until it is mended.

Staff are prepared to move the rolling stack and are more than happy to retrieve items on your behalf but this will need to be done during staffed hours

Returners registration problems

I'm just starting my 3rd year of this degree and have a problem logging into Discover.

I am able to log in to BREO using the password I updated in the summer, but the same password will not allow me into Discover/Library Catalogue.  I've tried some old passwords in case it's reverted, but they don't work either.

One other issue - the part time students on this course are unable to re-register at the moment because the system has not loaded our units or fees - we are all in the same boat.

Thank you for your enquiry. Sorry to read that you are having problems with DISCOVER I have two questions for you

  1)      Have you recently updated your logon password – or have you missed a notification to do this (please check your University emails)?

Signage

I visited your fabulous new library for the first time today and was a little shocked to notice that the big red boards that give details of all the services that are on each level of the library have a pretty bad grammatical error on them, that you may well be aware of... At the bottom of the lists of services it says "PC's". There should be no apostrophe after PC. I felt compelled to mention this as it is a university library and these sign boards are pretty prominent and important. I do hope you'll forgive me for pointing this out. Thank you.

Thank you for pointing this out. The signs were done by someone who is used to using the apostrophe as a space marker as well as a punctuation mark. This didn't sit well with the library team and they were supposed to be corrected over the summer I will look into this to see where we are with this job.
