24/7

When I was in the first year the library was not 24/7. But they have changed last year, which is really awesome the best library.

Thank you for your kind words. Your thoughts are important to us, but we're especially pleased when the feedback is positive
You've been telling us that you'd like to use the LRCs/Library to study at times that best suit you and your schedule.
24/7 opening hours at Luton LRC and Bedford Library started as a Vice Chancellor led pilot 7.1.13 - 21.7.13

It was in response to student demand from a variety of sources eg National Student Survey, informal feedback, student reps, LR feedback mechanisms etc

24/7 (ie LRC/library opening 24 hours a day 7 days a week) equalises opening hours across Luton & Bedford campuses offer 168 hours of study space at each campus
All students are welcome to use Luton LRC and Bedford Campus Library. This is particularly beneficial as both will be open over the Bank Holidays.
We really appreciate you taking the time to let us know we're doing something right. We look forward to serving you in the future

Student's novel

One of your second year students based at the Luton Campus (studying Business) has just published his first novel, Combatant Wiz Kids: Secrets Revealed with his twin and another co-author, under the name of P.A.S Lewis. Would the university be interested in having a copy for their library?

Congratulations on getting your novel published. Please discuss your generous offer with your Academic Liaison Librarian Avtar Natt

I'm writing my MSc dissertation and I was wondering if the Library has any way of making a couple of books available for me for my research. I just don't seem to be able to find them in none of the searches.

I list them below:

I would be very very grateful if you could assist me in hunting for these two books in any form.

Thank you for your enquiry. In the first instance you need to check the library catalogue and DISCOVER - both accessible from the front page of LRWeb.

If you haven't used the service before I would advise you to read all the web pages in this section of LRWeb

Thank you very much for your help Jo, it is much appreciated.

No the University doesn't buy back textbooks I'm afraid.  You could try our bookshop John Smiths http://www.jscampus.co.uk/shop/branch.asp?mscssid=TJ3MBWNWD1L38JC0JVMFPJNR2NSC5MNE&CollectionID=%400000000294
This is the website for our branch.
The bookshop is located in the Mall in Luton as yet there isn't one in Bedford.  but if you email  tamara.cato@johnsmith.co.uk

Luton IT Suite

New IT suit is amazing for study, i like it really, I would like to thank Vice Chancellor Mr Bill Rummell for this gift to the students of bedfordshire'
The IT Suite at Luton Campus is now OPEN after a  major refurbishment over the summer. The £1.2 million project to improve the facilities and equipment was officially opened on Thursday 17th October 2013.
The improvements include the creation of two separate areas - a PC zone with 166 PCs and a Social study area with different types of colourful furniture all with data and power points built in. The two areas can be separated by soundproofed, sliding doors to allow the PC area to be used for exams while still keeping the Social area open for use.
Other improvements include new flooring, ceilings, electrics, energy saving lighting, data cabling up to CAT 6 standards and upgraded WiFi capacity to allow for up to 2 devices per person.

Bedford - Social Learning Space

I saw the pictures of the refurbished IT Suite on your Facebook page. It looks great. I am a student at Bedford when are we going to get some social learning space?

Thank you for your feedback. The improvements at Bedford Campus Library include the newly opened Silent Study floor
http://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/libraryservices/news/new-silent-study-space

and the group study room on the ground floor. Learning Resources bid for money to develop the ground floor of the Library into social learning spaces but it was turned down because of the exciting plans for the new Campus Centre. The new Campus Centre will have plenty of social learning spaces. In the mean time the Library and the Learning Hub offer a variety of learning environments to help you with your studies.
You are welcome to use the facilities on the Luton Campus if you come into Luton at any time.

Butterfield Silent Study

I saw the photos of the Bedford Campus Library launch of the new Silent Study floor. I am a nursing student at Butterfield - can we have a Silent Study space?

Thank you for your enquiry. As a student of the University of Bedfordshire you are welcome to use the study spaces at all the Campuses of the University including Bedford and Luton which are 24/7 365 and have Silent Study provision.

Due to the space restrictions at Butterfield Learning Resources cannot provide the range of study environments it would like to. As a consequence the LRC can get rather noisy at busy times. I am sorry but there are no immediate plans to create silent study space at Butterfield.

Suggested book title

I don't know whether this is possible but I understand that sometimes the library gets books if it is deemed necessary to some courses.
I have been looking for a book by author Sue Soan called Improving Outcomes for Looked After Children: A practical guide to raising aspirations and achievement.
If it is possible the library does get it that would be great, if not I was wondering if you knew of anywhere which sold it that isn't as expensive as high street shops as its retailed at about £65.

As you are a level 3 student you are eligible to use the University's Document Supply service. This service borrows items from on other institutions on your behalf. You first 5 requests are free.

Read the pages in this section of LR Web

then complete the form here

check your University e-mail account regularly. We will send you an e-mail when the book is ready to collect.

There are various on-line book retailers that may have this item at reduced cost but even Amazon has it on sale for £65.60 so I am not sure you will this title cheaper.

In the mean time you could always complete the Recommend a Resource suggestion form

Reservation Query

I reserved a book (Organisational Behaviour, Robbins and Campbell) from the Luton LRC which I need urgently. My concern is that the book having been reserved will be on its way to Bedford and won't get here maybe til Wedneday. I would rather come to Luton on Monday to collct it . Please advise - can it be held at Luton for the student to pick up from Luton.

I have to advise you that your request is 3rd in a queue of 3. Although the due date on the item is today 21 Oct it is unlikely that you will get the item this week. I hope that isn't the case but I thought I'd better warn you.

You can check your library account at any time. It will indicate whether your reservations are on their way. You can also renew items this way.
library.beds.ac.uk
click on the Renewals (sign in) tab
sign in with your normal University username and password

I am happy to change your collection point from Bedford to Luton. Please email me back if you still want this to happen. We have daily van deliveries to Bedford so the delay on arrival is minimal

You may always ask staff for help at the Customer Service desk or email

Butterfield PCs & WiFi

Please we need more computers at Butterfield. The laptops are no good and poor library staff waste time trying to connect students to the internet.

I am sorry that you have been experiencing problems with the PCs and laptops at Butterfield. As you know there is very limited space at Butterfield. Over the summer all the PCs in Learning Resources were replaced with Intel i5 PCs. The Learning Resources team also managed to squeeze in 4 more PCs taking the total to 16 at Butterfield.

I do understand than 16 PCs is not adequate especially when the LRC is full. The laptops were all replaced at the end of the last academic year. The University has a cross Campus project to improve the WiFi connectivity at every Campus. Work was completed at Butterfield on 16.10.13. As you have had problems with WiFi since then I have reported this to the University's ICT team and they will look into it for you. I hope we can resolve this problem for you and the other students at Butterfield as quickly as possible.

Bedford: Silent Study floor

The silent study floor is fantastic and I really appreciate the library staffs efforts in monitoring noise levels. Thank you

The new Silent Study Space on Level 2 in Bedford Library is now OPEN
Learning Resources is delighted that this new resource is available to students based or visiting, the Bedford Campus. As Bedford Campus Library is 24/7 having a variety of study environments is vital for students. University of Bedfordshire's  wide choice of study space enhances learning, success and overall experience of University life.
The project was the result of lobbying from the Students' Union and directly from students themselves since the merger in 2006. Although its been a bit of wait we are pleased that this project has come to a very positive conclusion and we are able to offer our students a whole floor of Silent Study space.
Students are asked to respect the silence rule. They are other areas available in the Library  should the need for group or social discussions be necessary. Staff patrols and electronic monitoring are in place to reinforce this rule.

The old Silent Study Room on the ground floor has been changed into a bookable Group Study room. Please ask at the Customer Service Desk if you are interested in booking a slot.

Language Centre

I am a student in Beford Campus and I want to know when and where is the english language improvement lessons.

Movable book stacks

Concerned that people can get stuck in the movable book rack

Thank you for your concern there isn't anything to worry about. There are movable book racks at Bedford Campus Library and Luton LRC. Both areas have benefited by this installation as more shelves – therefore more books and journals - can be packed into one space.
There are manual brakes on each set of movable book racks. This stops the book racks from moving  and the person inside potentially being hurt or stuck.
Even if the person in the rolling stack forgets to put the brake on there is a motion sensitive device which acts as an emergency brake. This would stop the shelves closing and hurting someone in the  movable book racks.
I would always advise you to follow the instructions on the movable book racks. Ask staff for help and advice if you are not sure. To be extra specially careful you could always task a kik stool in with you for your own peace of mind, but this isn’t necessary

Self Service password

Password compromised on self issue machines. The big screen where you tap in the password should not be visible to others.

Thank you for sharing your concern. Please be reassured that that the University would not have invested in any equipment that would put personal account security in direct risk.
Although the keyboard is quite visible to the customer directly (and potentially to anyone else walking past) whatever is typed comes up as asterisk (*) so cannot be read. Someone could possibly  follow your hand movements and work out one or two digits of your password its true. It is however extremely unlikely that they would be able to distinguish your entire password. Equally it would be nearly impossible to match that password with your ID.

There have been no account breaches because of the screens in the years they have been in operation.

24/7

I love that the library is now 24/7. It gives us a chance to access the library at unusual times. I love that we could easily access e-journals and other resources.

I am glad 24/7 works so well for you.

Please remember its 24/7 365 so you may visit the library at any time

DISCOVER

I have an account on Discover. Unfortunately I am unable to log into Discover, my password isn't accepted. How can I get it reset please?

I am sorry that you seem to be experiencing problems with DISCOVER. I have checked your library account and nothing seems to be wrong with it. The University has had no reported problems with DISCOVER
May I check with you how you are accessing this product?

From the front page of LRWeb
click on the DISCOVER icon in red (just above the search box)

Off campus it may give you the option of logging on through Shibboleth - if this is the case please try that route. Otherwise authenticate with your usual University ID and password
Then click on Sign In
log on with your usual University ID and password.

If this doesn't work please contact your Academic Liaison librarian Avtar Natt
