Billed items

The last time I borrow books at library but when I returned them may be I was put them on self issue machine instead of self return and after that I was return them to the library. Today I received an invoice letter about two books that I was borrow is overdue and I need to pay full for this so what I need to do now. I hope you can help me with this problem.

Thanks for your enquiry. I have checked your account and you have 2 billed items. If a book is more than 5 weeks over due then a bill for the replacement cost of that item is issued
http://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/libraryservices/availableservices/borrowing/fines

The two books were borrowed 28.10.15 renewed twice, 3 overdues and finally a bill was issued 21.12.15

As you claim you have returned these items I will have a Missing Books check started to establish if they are in the library anywhere. If they are the bill will be reduced to a fine. If they are not then the bill is payable. The Missing Book check can take up to 3 weeks (excluding the Christmas break).

Two other books are also on your library account and also overdue – due back 10.12.15
These items must be returned as soon as possible

You can check your library account at any time you are online
http://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/libraryservices/availableservices/regforserv/lib-reg
and you can renew your books as long as they are not needed by anyone else and they are not overdue

DISCOVER

I have not been able to get on Discover when I am at home, at first it would allow me on using explorer but not chrome, however now it won't let me access using any browser. When typing in my username and password it just says invalid.

Are you able to help?

Thank you for your enquiry. I am sorry that you’re are having problems getting into DISCOVER

We have reports of people getting this error, "Sorry, cannot locate your account" when trying to access DISCOVER/Digital Library off-campus:

We think that this is caused by the autofill function in your browser (particularly Chrome) scrambling your login information.

You may need to turn off the auto fill option in your browser and try again:

Settings, show advanced settings, password and forms, uncheck auto-fill. (Chrome)

If this doesn’t work please try a different browser to see if that helps.

You may also need to clear your browser history, if you don't know how to do this check out
I hope this sorts your problem out. May I suggest that you subscribe to our digital blog which posts details on new products and any reported problems – and solutions

If you still have problems please ring 01234 793189 during staffed hours to talk through your problem with a member of staff

Thanks

Library Catalogue

Sorry to trouble you so late to Christmas

I’m having difficulties logging into my library catalogue account.  I’m using my ID  and my normal BREO password but aren’t able to access the catalogue.  Please can you direct me to someone that can help.

I’d be grateful for any help or advice

Thank you for your enquiry. I am sorry that you are having problems connecting to the library catalogue
I have checked your library account and there doesn’t seem to be a problem with it. There has been a problem with the links between BREO and the library catalogue which has been sorted out but the problem could be held in your cache.

I have 3 suggestions for you to try please
Clear your cache, log out and then re-log in
Try a different browser
Go directly to the library catalogue rather than using the BREO link
Library.beds.ac.uk

If none of these options work please ring  01234 793189 during office hours to discuss your problem with a member of staff

Library account

Please, I am unable to log-in to my library account. I need help urgently to be able to do my assignment. I tried a few times unsuccessfully, though carefully typing my ID No and password.

I am sorry that you are having problems with your library account. I have checked it and it seems to be fine.

May I suggest that you go into the library catalogue directly

rather than through a BREO link

You may also wish to check which browser you are using. There were problems with Chrome last week. Try using IE of Firefox and see if this helps

DISCOVER

Discover account will work only in IE and not in Chrome. Nobody has responded to my telephone message left with the LRC on Tuesday requesting urgent help. Luckily I was able to trial a few different ways around the error message (you note the error messages are still being reported, on your Twitter feed today). I will look into seeing if the cache on my Chrome browser perhaps needs to be cleared to support whatever changes you have performed recently, but for now I would recommend people to use IE if they want to access Discover - maybe you should create a banner on Breo to help people with this.

Thank you for your email. I am sorry to read that you didn't get a response to your telephone message, please can you advise me which phone number you used so I can follow it up.

The advice being given via our blogs and social media is
We're still getting reports of this "Sorry, cannot locate your record" error when accessing DISCOVER off campus, particularly when coming from BREO. We think that these problems are down to the Autofill function in the browser putting the wrong values into the login box. We recommend that you either turn off Autofill in your browser or clear the login boxes and manually enter your username and password.

http://bedsdigital.blogspot.co.uk/

We also advise using Firefox or IE (not Chrome) and going directly into DISCOVER not via BREO. Links are on the front page of LRWeb
http://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/

DISCOVER

I'm trying to access discover from home and it's not allowing me- telling me that the information I submitted is invalid. This has happened a few times with me and a friend now.
Is there anything else I can do to access discover from home please?

There have been some problems with accessing DISCOVER in the past few days. May I suggest a few things to try:
turn off auto fill in Chrome. You do this by:

Settings, show advanced settings, password and forms, uncheck auto-fill

Or you could try a different browser.
Or you could go to DISCOVER directly rather than through a BREO link, from the front page of LRWeb
http://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/

if this doesn't resolve the issue please ring  01234 793189 to talk through your issue with a member of staff

Resources

I have found that whilst attempting to search for books on Child Exploitation and Child Trafficking there are so few books that the site isn't all that helpful for my assignment meaning it definitely won't be that helpful for my assignment needs as it is going to be on the same topic.

Thank you for your enquiry. I am concerned as to why you have limited your search to just VLeBooks.com

Using the advice on
http://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/applied-soc-studies/findinginformation

Applied Social Studies students should start by accessing the library catalogue or DISCOVER with appropriate search terms links can be found on the front page of LRWeb
http://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/
Using reference books can help identify appropriate search terms

Catalogue problems

I am unable to sign into the library catalogue. I have tried my usual log in, but still not giving me access. Please help.

I am sorry that you are experiencing problems. The University seems to have an issue with some resources which is being looked into and worked on. I cannot give you an exact time scale but please try again in an hour

Luton - Study environment

never feel silence or a good study atmosphere in any part of the library. Every where gang talks, anti social activities, no one is monitoring or checking it. I'm fed up. Today I have to submit the project, I'm not not able to do it.

Luton LRC offers a variety of learning environments across all 4 floors. Group, social, quiet and silent.  Levels 2 and 3 are silent floors. Those floors are monitored electronically and by staff patrols. Neither floor has shown the high level of noise you indicate.

Please be sure to use the silent floors as this area would seem to suit your learning style better than other places in the LRC

If those floors are noisy at the moment please come down to the Customer Sertvice desk on level 1 and report your concerns.

Library account

I cannot gain access to my library account,I need this fixing asap.

Thanks for your enquiry. I am sorry that you’re having problems. There doesn’t seem to be anything wrong with your library account. Please could you specify what your problem is?

The information on the following webpage may be helpful

Bedford - rolling stack

I think the moving book shelves should be removed as I nearly got crushed today!!! I screamed and the lady pressed stop. It was very stressful!

Thank you for letting me know what happened today. I am sorry that you had such an alarming experience. I understand that Bedford Library staff have spoken to you and re-assured you that you could not have been seriously hurt due to the system's fail safe. I believe you have been shown her how to lock down shelving for the next time you are in.  Please remember there are instructions at the end of each stack on how to do this.

Google Books

Has the library ever considered subscribing to Google Books?

Thank you for your feedback.  As Google Books is a free resource available to anyone it is not necessary or possible for the library to subscribe to the service.

PC inactivity

I am disappointed with the inactivity clock on the computers in the IT Suite. I printed off a journal article, sat down by the PC I was using, and began to read it and dissect it. I don't know how long I was doing this for, but it must have been a while. My computer screen suddenly caught my eye, as I found it had logged off. Although my work was saved, and accessible via the document recovery on Microsoft, I lost the 15 or so tabs I had open on the internet, all relevant to my study. This has set me back in my assignment, as it took me hours to compile all the articles.'

The timeout on all LRC PCs is 30 minutes, after which time of inactivity on the PC a warning message is displayed. This states that there has been inactivity and the PC will be logged out. After a further 10 minutes and the message continuously being displayed. the PC is logged off.
This was requested as a result complaints about students  “hogging” PC s. This alsot fits in with current Learning Resources' policy of removing abandoned personal belongings and logging out PCs by staff.
I am sorry you have been caught out by this, may I suggest that you set a timer on your phone to go off after 25mins so you can do some mouse movements to prevent the PC from logging out.

Luton Post Graduate Centre - MACs

I wanted to try and access one of the Mac computers today in the PostGrad building. But using my usual login (student nr + student password) doesn't seem to work. Is there a special login for these computers?

I need to use one, to get access to Adobe InDesign to create a campaign for one of my courses.

Thank you for your enquiry. Learning Resources does not support the IT resources in the PG Centre. We believe the log on is either
Guest and Guest
Or
Guest and nothing (ie no password)

The MACs in Learning Resources have Adobe InDesign and the Luton LRC is open 24/7 x 365 if that’s any help?

Renewals

I have been unsuccessful at renewing my loan of 4 books online.  The password I used is the same as that used when signing for the books on 4 Nov; however the site is not allowing me access.

The 4 books are now overdue, please can you advise on what I should do, as I will need these books well into the new year.

The reason you could not renew those books was because they were overdue.

Please remember to renew or return your loans on or before the due date

Resources for my course

I think that the University of Bedfordshire should have more books related on Engineering course. Also as in a electronic source and hardcopies as well. IEEE - electronic source. Electronic devices and circuits

I have done a very crude search on the library catalogue for materials for your course and found around 100 items. This includes print (hardcopy) and digital items. A proper search would undoubtedly reveal more. I can reassure you that IEEE is part of the University's digital collection.

Please remember the catalogue and DISCOVER search boxes are on the front page of LRWeb
http://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/

I am concerned that you may need some assistance with your search strategy. I would advise you to contact your Academic Liaison Librarian to discuss your particular requirements

http://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/studyhub/what-is-study-hub/study-hub-teams/academicliaison/Chris_Whitfield

May I also remind you that if an item is not at your home Campus you may use the reservation service to ensure that you have access to the required title
http://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/libraryservices/availableservices/reserve

Your librarian has created a raft of information for your course and you may find this helpful too
http://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/computing-and-info

If you have any specific titles in mind for the University to consider purchasing please use our Recommend a Resource page
http://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/contact/recommend-a-resource

or if you have a particular digital resource in mind please use the eBooks on demand facility

Printing in colour

When printing in colour I'm sure all students are unaware they have to go to printing properties in order for the print out to print in colour even though you can tap your ID on the colour printer and it prints

Thank you for your suggestion I think this is something that students get told and probably forget when they actually need the information. Your comment is a timely reminder for "refresher" information.

In the Library handbook there is some information on printing and it has the web links to the full details on LRWeb in the Just a Monute video on this page:

http://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/libraryservices/availableservices/printing

If you need to print in colour, select the colour option through print properties in the print dialogue box, then use the colour multifunction machine.

Appointment with Acadmic Liaison Librarian for my course

How or where do i find information to book a appointment with  the new librarian for my course?

Many thanks for your enquiry. A lot of first stop information is on Learning Resources website
Lrweb.beds.ac.uk
If you click Study Hub @ Library tab on the red ribbon on the home page. Then click on What is the Study Hub. Then click on Study Hub teams, then click on Academic Liaison Librarians,  all links in the left pane. In the paragraph headed “What do we do” there is a link word highlighted in red “subject” click on this. This will bring up a table click the name next to Applied Social Studies and you will get to the librarian’s page. The web address for the librarian’s page is below. Bookmark it so you don’t have to remember all the clicks next time you want to contact him

In addition to this your librarian has created a wealth of information for your course

If you click on Library Guides tab on the red ribbon on the home page of LRWeb. Then click on Subject Guides in the left pane you will find a wealth of information in Applied Social Studies

Books Unlocked - Bedford, Reading for Pleasure

Reading for Pleasure books: Such a good idea, makes me want to come into the library more often

Many thanks for this positive feedback. May I draw your attention to LR's fiction blog

We welcome reviews from anyone in the University community please send the details of your book and your review to libraryideas@beds.ac.uk

Accessing eBooks

I have requested the following EBook:
Working with children and teenagers using solution focused approaches: enabling children to overcome challenges and achieve their potential
I am unable to log in to VLebook as it is not accepting University of bedfordshire as the organisation.
Could you confirm what the log in details are please?

I don't understand what you mean by requested. If you paste the details of the ebook into the search bar of DISCOVER (search bars for the library catalogue and DISCOVER are on the front page of LRWeb

http://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/

Authenticate with your University of Bedfordshire ID number and password
Click on the correct item (it should be the first one on the list)
In the citation click on preview
You will see the full text

If you think UoB should buy the eBook click on the Request Access button and fill out the details in the dialogue box
You must always follow Learning Resources search routes and log on with University of Bedfordshire credentials

Searching for resources

Hi The online library search engine is totally useless. The Lancaster Uni online library is brilliant - perhaps you could take a look at that and seek advice. I cannot understand why I can't search by author. It is anti-literature search as I can't even search by subject. Basically, I have to know what I am looking for, go individually into the online journal and then find the paper I am looking for. How am I supposed to learn more or find more things if the search doesn't help me? Even when I know the paper I am looking for, it still takes me half an hour to find it. The entire system is off-putting and absolutely not study friendly at all.

Thank you for your email I am sorry that you seem to be experiencing problems searching for resources. Please could you tell me which "Library search engine" you are using? University of Bedfordshire offers two search routes
The library catalogue library.beds.ac.uk
where you can search by: Author. Title, Keyword or Journal Title

so the subject search facility is there in Keyword

and DISCOVER http://0-eds.a.ebscohost.com.brum.beds.ac.uk/eds/search/basic?sid=a78d7b26-7f68-4124-b6b2-d1407d549ee3%40sessionmgr4002&vid=0&hid=4203
where you can search by: author, title and keyword

so again the subject search facility is there in the Keyword option

There is a raft of on-line advice about accessing resources including these pages
http://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/guides/beyond-discover

http://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/guides/researchers

Your Academic Liaison Librarian has created alot of content around your subject that you may find useful

University PCs - saving work to the U Drive

I wasn’t aware that I needed to save my work to the U Drive and therefore lost all my work.

When using a PC in the LRC to create notes, or materials for an assignment or presentation it is essential that you save your work.

Remember to save your work regularly

As soon as you have created the document (that could mean writing the title). Save it to your network space on the U Drive.
  • click on: File - (Top left hand tab)
  • click on: Save As
  • choose your U drive: Student Id Number
  • Type the name of Document in File Name box (bottom of dialogue box)
  • click Save
  • after that it is OK to just click Save at regular intervals. Please don't rely on the autosave.

Very Important

Do not save files in My Documents or to the Desktop. These are networked PCs and any work saved like this will be lost.

Save to your University Network space Anywhere

  • You may save your work to your University network space anytime you are using a device with access to the internet.
  • Use the University of Bedfordshire Webstorage facility to access your University network space via the internet.
Log into: webstorage.beds.ac.uk
It will prompt you for your University ID and password

Reserved item

I am currently having difficulty whilst signing into my library catalogue in order to renew my book which is due today but I would like to renew it for another week. I will be grateful if you can assist me in this matter.

Thank you for your enquiry. The reason you could not renew the book is that someone else has reserved this item and you are required to return it.

When you log into your library account and see HOLD next to an item it means that it has been reserved by someone else

Please return the book as soon as possible

Luton - Study Environment level 2

I am highly dissatisfied with the library and its services.

Not only are students talking loudly in the quiet areas, but there are no staffs on these floors to govern the way students behave. Yes they should know the rules, but staff should be governing the quiet floors as well just for certainty.

Silent Study floors: level 2 & 3 of Luton's LRC are designated Silent Study floors at the request of our students. Provision is made for group and social learning elsewhere in the LRC so there is an expectation for students to choose their preferred study environment and abide by the requirements. The Silent floors are monitored electronically and this is backed up by staff patrols - during staffed hours. Any student caught breaking the Silence requirement is allowed one warning after that Library sanctions come into effect. Student behaviour was a key theme at the recent Student Union conference. This is a university concern which is being looked at by staff, students themselves and the Student Union.
Level 2 is a silent floor I will ensure staff monitor this floor. No flags came through on the electronic monitoring I do apologise for the disrupted study environment. It should be silent

Luton LRC - CCTV

I think that more CCTV cameras are needed in the library

Thank you for your suggestion. The library has a reasonable level of CCTV coverage and this is backed up by LR staff presence or security patrols throughout the opening hours. As Luton LRC will be relocating to L Block in 2016 there will be no further investment in the current premises. Please be assured that the new library at Luton will have an appropriate level of CCTV coverage.

I must ask why you think more CCTV is necessary. Have you experienced a particular problem? If yes please let me know the details and I will try to help you.

Remote access

my log in details are no longer working……for Discover which as I am a mature student is a significant pain!

I am a returning student and so did my usual log in  which has not worked and have also tried the format which also does not work

I am sorry that you have been experiencing problems. I have checked your library account and it seems fine.

The University was experiencing problems with UK Access Management last week and I am thinking that maybe you caught the tail end of that

Please check your access again using both date formats. If you still have a problem please ring

Silent area - typing styles

It must be on the board that if people want to type hard (banging on the keyboard) must not be allowed in the SILENT ROOM as it can be quite disruptive. I appreciate yur consideration. Thank You

Thank you for raising your concerns.Perceptions of noise are subjective, reflecting all sorts of factors at the time of the complaint. It doesn’t stop noisy typing from being irritating but a moment of reflection on whether the typing is really noisy or whether it seems so because the area is especially quiet, or you aren’t feeling very well, or you are feeling sleepy and are easily distracted may be worth balancing out.
The University has deliberately invested in “quieter” keyboards for the silent areas of Learning Resources. They cannot exclude all sound.
Someone else’s typing style may reflect their thought patterns and expression so are inevitable as a part of their research process. It goes without saying that aggressive typing may impact on finger and hand joints in time. None the less when someone is in full flow they won’t be aware that their typing is noisy.
2 days ago the Guardian ran an article “Death to noisy typists!”
the newspaper’s suggestion for polite notices has been ineffectual in the past at University of Bedfordshire. Polite notices become litter and/or wallpaper so no-one notices them.
May I suggest that you book a PC in a corner of the Silent area of Learning Resources so you can limit your study partners
or you invest in noise cancelling headphones

Retired University of Bedfordshire Membership

I am a retired employee. I have been looking through the library web pages but cannot find any information about what subject fields/resources are available at the various different libraries.

Can you enlighten me?

Thanks for your enquiry. Information about our resources on our website can be found - broadly - in our subject support.
http://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/guides/subjectguides

Other than that the best best to check is the Library Catalogue. The search page is on the front page of LRWeb
http://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/

Or you can log onto the catalogue directly
library.beds.ac.uk

Catalogue records will indicate which Campus(es) hold that title

I am happy to pass on membership information for you.

Retired members of staff may have free reference membership which allows individuals to visit the LRC/library and use the print materials in stock. Alumnus membership

I hold a Masters degree from University of Bedfordshire and I am enquiring about membership of your Library. Primarily it is for remote online access to on-line journals.

Do you offer this to Alumni?

Thank you for your enquiry. University of Bedfordshire does not offer remote access to digital resources to Alumni at the moment due to licencing restrictions. We are looking into this but cannot foresee a change in the next few months
There is walk in access to a limited range of digital resources on Campus
http://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/libraryservices/exusers/walkindigitalresources
You may use the Guest WiFi network on your own laptop Or you may use the Guest PC (one in each LRC) on a first come first served basis. You will not have access to any of your old University IT accounts or to the Digital Library.
You are eligible for Reference Membership which is Free - no loans
This means you can use the space in learning resources and all the print materials on a reference (ie in library) basis for free – ie no charge. This does not allow any borrowing of materials

Or Alumnus Associate Membership – which allows borrowing - is £30 per annum
This means you can use the space in learning resources and all the print materials on a reference (ie in library) basis – for a heavily reduced charge of £30 per year. You can borrow up to 4 items at a time (from the standard and 7 day print collection)
