Opening Hours

Hi, is the library open this week?

Thank you for your enquiry. Bedford and Luton Libraries are open 24/7. Aylesbury LRC and Milton Keynes Library are open until midday 22.12.17

All opening hours details are on our website

https://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/opening

Sconul Access

I am a student at the University of Bath. I am now home in Bedford for the Christmas period and am struggling to get much work done as all of the Bedfordshire libraries seem to only offer one hour free wifi and little seating area.

I was wondering if you allow visiting students into your library during the holiday period?

Thank you for your enquiry. The University of Bedfordshire Learning Resources welcomes visitors under the Sconul Access scheme. If you have Sconul Access authorisation and go through our application process then you are welcome to use the library. I have to advise you however that any applications received today or tomorrow will not be processed until week beginning 8 January. There is no other access route.

https://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/libraryservices/membership/external-users/categories

I would advise you to process membership in case you want to use the library at Easter

Alumnus Membership

i heard that there is guest pc available in LRC , but i even couldnt find it , can you please let me know .

and how can i have laptop for loan to use within the campus please let me know

Thank you for your enquiry. Alumni do not have access to the University network or remote access to digital resources due to licencing agreements. This is not negotiable I am afraid. External customer may not borrow University laptops but you are welcome to bring in your own device

Please ask staff at the Customer Service desk about the kiosk PC for external customers.

Bedford Library - Level 2 Silent floor

I am a frequent visitor in the University of Bedford library in Bedford. Overall, I think it is an excellent and convenient place for me to study, and I enjoy my time being in the library most of the time.

However, there has been numerous occasions recently that people were talking loudly to each other or on the phone on the silent floor. I did not confront them, as I am not a member of the university and I think it’s not right for me to do so.

I know it’s nearly Christmas, and there aren't a lot of students in the library at the moment, but I do believe people should follow the library rules regardless how quiet or busy the library is.

All in all, I hope the library could do something to ensure there is minimum unnecessary noise disruption to everyone visits the library.

Thanks for bringing your concerns to my attention. Level 2 is Bedford's silent floor  and this environment should be maintained at all times. If it doesn't please go down to the ground floor Customer Service desk and report your concerns to the library staff or security who are on duty and they will assist.

Luton Library staff praise

The lovely lady that helped me submit my assignment and print. I hope the whole staff in the library have a very merry Christmas and a happy new year

Thank you for your kind words. We are honoured to be a part of your academic journey. Hope you have a lovely Christmas break too.

Luton Library staff - praise

Am so happy and excited!!! I was nervous and anxious at first but she developed my confidence by taking me through the process

Thank you for your kind words. We are honoured to be a part of your academic journey

Alumnus Access

I am an Alumni at this university and I think its very important to have our accounts to access the computers. All students have paid enough for it and how would we all apply for jobs with now having a degree without a computer?

The University of Bedfordshire provides access to PCs and software to its current cohort of students only. Licencing agreements mean that this offer cannot be extended to external customers, visitors or alumni. It is not something the University is withholding.

Alumni have access to a kiosk PC which has no access to the University network - ask staff for details if you don't know where it is. Alumni may also bring in their own portable devices and use the guest WIFI

Suggestions

Need some vending machines in the library
Need a stationery shop near the library would be convenient

We tried vending machines in our previous location and they were not used very much. None the less we are giving this another try and vending machines should be in place by the end of January
Regarding your request for a stationers:The Mall has a Rymans, WH Smiths and the Works are just over the road. On Park Street there is Bayliss and Wright. All of these outlets sell a broad range of stationery. Newsagents also carry a limited range.

Luton Library - Vending

Need vending machines in the library
My girlfriend and my girlfriend's sister go out at 2am in order to purchase energy drinks which is very dangerous. Therefore a vending machine would be useful

Sconul Access

I am a current student at another university but living in Bedford - I was hoping to use the library just for the study space during my holidays, but wanted to confirm a couple of things - firstly is there WiFi access in the study space, and secondly are there sockets in order to charge my laptop? If so, I was wondering how I could go about using the library?

Thank you for your enquiry. There is no walk in access for members of the public. If you wish to become a member of the library or are eligible for Sconul Access membership you may apply and when your application is processed use the library after that.

First check with your University that you are eligible for Sconul Access If you can join start the process as advised. Then follow the instructions on our website.

https://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/libraryservices/membership/external-users/categories

Applications (on receipt) take 2 – 5 working days to process. As this is after authorisation from Sconul Access you may not have a membership card before Christmas.

If you are not eligible you may apply for membership and pay the appropriate fee.

Eduroam is available. If your institution does not support Eduroam you may request a guest wifi account. There are power points in designated spaces in the library.

Sconul Access

I have been accepted on to the SCONUL access scheme and wondered whether access to the UCMK campus library is included under the University of Bedfordshire umbrella.

I am a previous student at UCMK and so know how useful the library there, so am hoping that  it is possible to study in the library.

Many thanks in advance for your help with this matter.

Thank you for your enquiry. The libraries at Aylesbury, Bedford and Luton are included in our Sconul Access offer as stated on our website. The Milton Keynes Library is not staffed and therefore not open to external customers.

Sconul Access

I was just wondering if you could help me. I am a University of Surrey student, however I am returning to my hometown (Bedford) over Christmas and I was wondering whether it would be possible to access the Bedfordshire University library whilst I am there?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for your enquiry. Please check with Surrey regarding your eligibility for Sconul Access. If you can join start the process as advised. Then follow the instructions on our website.

Accessing the digital library

I am now doing the academic  research on my assignment which the deadline on this Friday  1700hrs (Hong Kong Time).   I have just found out that my  elibrary account has been locked and I cannot go on!

Could you please kindly  activate my account asap.  This is very urgent.
I did not change my account ID and password,  however, it cannot login.

And there are a few times I did experienced  before. With the correct password and ID and cannot log in  successfully.

I am sorry that you have experienced some  problems logging onto the digital library. There is nothing  wrong with your library account. Did you get an email from  the University asking you to change your password? Did you  remember to do this? If you forgot to do this then your  account would get locked down.

I have arranged for your password to be changed.

Please try this and get back to me if it  doesn't work. Once you have logged on please change your  password straight away. This is very important. Password  change instructions are on this webpage  https://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/libraryservices/pcs-printing-software/PCs

Milton Keynes Library - Business

I would like to request that more books are made available at the UCMK Library for UBBS courses. We have just been asked to read a specific book for one of our units and there are only 8 copies in the university, 2 of which are reference only which are at the Bedford and Luton campuses. There are only 6 of us on the unit at MK but with at least one book missing and 50+ students at Bedford going to need it after tomorrow there is likely to be a long reserve list. I myself reserved early and even though there was standard loan copies available I have been allocated a 7 day loan book. It would be nice if there was at least reference only books at UCMK. At present there seems to be a very small section of Business books. I am sure that getting this specific book before we submit our assignment in January but just in case the book in question is: Sustainability-Essentials for Business (Young & Dhanda, 2013).

Learning Resources is in the process of updating the MK business collection, we are spending a fair bit of money in that area. Please let your Academic Liaison Librarian know if you are having difficulty accessing other resources so she can see if we can get additional copies for MK.

Luton Library - Study Environment

I am a first year student with the University and I wish to bring to your attention an issue that is of great concern for me and several of my mates.

You cannot find anywhere to study in the library, regardless of which level, where people are not shouting, talking relentless, making phones calls, having discussion and even playing videos. This is not right. It is not fair on those who go there to read. There are enough levels to assign some levels to silent study only with University staff to monitor disturbance.

This is my first complaint and I can't imagine I will be the first. I will keep complaining throughout my 4 years here until this problem is effectively addressed.

Thank you for bringing your concerns to my attention. May I offer a quick (and I hope effective) solution? On levels 4, 5 & 6 of Luton Library there are silent study rooms. These are large rooms with individual study spaces where you can use your own mobile device or borrow a Learning Resources laptop. There are a few desktop PCs but the numbers are lower than elsewhere in the library to keep the noise down. Please do not confuse Silent Study rooms with the Group study rooms. The group study rooms are small, for groups of 4 - 7 students and bookable.

If you use these designated silent spaces I think you will be happier. Please note everyone is expected to comply with the Silence requirement. If you hear anyone talking you may contact staff on the customer service desk on level 1 for assistance or email libraryideas@beds.ac.uk during staffed hours for assistance. If you need to talk yourself just step outside the silent room have your conversation and return.

External Customers

I would like to use the Luton campus library as an external student, and I do not intend to borrow any books.

I am a student at BPP University (London) and live in Luton so would appreciate the opportunity to use your library for convenience. I have a photo ID card issued by BPP with an expiry date- is this sufficient for access?

Thank you for your enquiry. BPP is not a member of the Sconul Access scheme so there isn’t a free route to you becoming an external member of the University of Bedfordshire library.

You may join the library as a reference member for an annual fee of £30. Details are on our website

Thanks

Extended loan periods

I am completing my innovation and improvement project module for  my   final module in my top  degree in Nursing Practice ( part-time).  I am currently having to renew this book every 2 weeks. As My module runs until May 2018 and I wish to keep using this book for reference  ,is it possible to extend the loan /renewal periods ?

Thank you for your enquiry. I am sorry this isn’t possible. Please continue to renew the book on line or by phone as required. If the item is requested by someone else you will need to return it.
https://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/libraryservices/using-the-library/loans,-renewals-and-reservations/self-issue

This item is also available in digital format

As the book seems so valuable to you have you considered purchasing a copy?

Reservations

I am furious!!! It hasn’t been easy for me since the start of this academic year as it’s become extremely hard to borrow books from the library. Previously I used to order online and get them delivered to Putteridhe Bury campus, but now that’s been shut down which means that being a resident of Chesham which is nowhere near either Luton, Aylesbury and forget about Bedford or Milton Keynes it’s become ridiculously hard to borrow books.
Yesterday I went to the Aylesbury campus to pick up the books I had reserved. Turns out the desk was closed!!! It wasn’t even 5:00pm!!!! I had to drive there after work, drag my kids with me after school only to find out there was no one to serve.
I’m paying for me education and deserve a better service. The university needs to put a better system in place for residents like myself to make the book borrowing easier. I do access books online but you cannot deny the need of having a copy right there in front of you so you don’t have to trawl through finding the book.
I look forward to hearing from the relevant person.

Thank you for raising your concerns. I am very sorry that you have been having problems with collecting your resources. As you are taught on the Luton campus requesting items from any campus and having them delivered to Luton would seem to be your best option. Luton Library is open 24/7 and reservation collection is self service so there are no barriers to  getting your resources.

Unfortunately last week Aylesbury experienced some staffing issues with two members of staff off sick hence limited cover of our normal staffed hours. This is very unusual and I am sorry for the inconvenience.

External Customers

I am an occupational therapy student at London Southbank University but I live in Milton Keynes  I was wondering if I am able to use your libraries at weekends/ evenings when I am not in London? I would not need to borrow books and purely need to use it for study space.

Many thanks for your enquiry

Please check with Southbank to see if you are eligible for Sconul Access membership. If yes please start the process as they advise then check our library web page here

If you are not eligible you may pay for Reference membership details

Printing

I wish to make a complaint about the changes to the computer system and the printers in the library. Too many times I have experienced errors in printing documents, the documents do not print whole articles (pages are missing), but it is happy to take my printer credits anyway! Secondly, the changes to the computer system, when using Discover I am finding it difficult to print articles due to the changes which have been made to the system. Why I am I paying £9,000 a year for this terrible service. I am in my third year with enough stress from numerous assignments and a 10,000 word dissertation on top. Oh and thirdly, as a third year student why are we restricted to taking out a maximum of 20 books, it needs to be more; especially when conducting library based research. Changes need to be made and the system needs to checked.

Thank you for bringing your concerns to my attention. I am sorry that you have been experiencing problems with printing.

There have been no changes to the printing system. The problems the University has experienced with printing are directly to do with the upgrade to Windows 10 and would not affect printing from DISCOVER.
Regarding your specific queries have you raised your concerns with the library staff at Bedford?
The printing issues you describe namely Missing pages this is best dealt with at the time the error happened but did you specify a page range or did the machine indicate that it had run out of paper/toner?
The second point you make - cannot print articles. Are you sure you were able to access "full text" versions of the article?
When you're next in the library ask the staff to do a print log so you can check what you asked for and what got printed.

Regarding our loan limits. We have a maximum of 20 items so the whole University community has equitable access to the materials in Learning Resources. I would advise you to contact your Academic Liaison Librarian to get advice on accessing the best resources for your final year

Endnote

I asked the IT to upload the endnote in my laptop, but she told me you have to pay.

Could you please contact them to let them uploaded to me free like my colleagues.

I have investigated your enquiry and can report that
You declined to have the software installed on a research graduate school laptop. The University does not have a licence to install the software on personal devices.

Your friends had the software installed on a research graduate school laptop not a personal device.

If you expressly wish to use your MAC you will need to purchase a copy of End Note. If you want a free copy you will need to use a research graduate school laptop.

Putteridge Bury

Please could there be a drop off point at the Putteridge bury campus for all the library books for the students who only regularly go to this campus on part time courses.

Thank you for your suggestion. I am sorry but that is not possible at this time. I will take your request for consideration to LRSE managers when we look at Campus provision in the Spring with any changes being  announced by May 2018.

I would strongly advise you to use another Campus for resources and use of the study environment. The main Luton Campus isn't too far away from Putteridge Bury and is open 24/7

Alumnus Digital Access

I want to access to e library keeping update. I can't login. Please, could you help me

Unfortunately we are not able to provide remote access to digital resources to past staff or students.  This is stipulated in the contracts we have agreed with the information publishers.

However many of the titles are available to be used by Alumni if they are able to visit the library in person.  Have you applied for and received a library alumi pass?  An application form can be found here:

Alumnus Membership

I graduated from MSc pharmacology. I want to access to e library keeping update. I can't login. Please, could you help me.

Once you have graduated from the University, you no longer have your University IT accounts and cannot access the online resources provided for current students.

You may take out a membership of the library, but this will not give you access to digital resources.

Details at the link below:

lrweb.beds.ac.uk
Print off and complete the form, send it with a passport style photo and any remittance to: Sarah Arkle Head of Reader Services University of Bedfordshire

Once you gain Alumni access to the University’s library you may access a limited range of digital materials on Campus via guest wifi with your own laptop or tablet or the kiosk PC (ask staff for details). Details are on our website

Due to the licencing arrangements the University has with digital resource providers no-one external to the University may have remote access to any digital products and may only have limited access to some digital products on Campus. These are binding arrangements with significant consequences if not adhered to.

Using Sconul Access

Thank you for setting up my Sconul Access account. Is there a way for me to access the online ebooks?

You need to ask the host institution this question. If you have your own laptop or tablet make sure its authenticated to Eduroam on a University of Bedfordshire campus before you visit. It will save you data and help your access.
https://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/libraryservices/pcs-printing-software/wifi
I imagine you will have Walk In access to a limited range of their resources via Eduroam - but check with them

Please don’t forget that you can still access University of Bedfordshire digital resources remotely via Eduroam.

Sconul Access

I am currently on placement at Luton. My university made me aware of the Sconul scheme to access other university libraries and they have approved my application. I would like to discuss the possibility with you of working within the University of Bedfordshire library at weekends to allow me to complete my module work for the year.

As you have authorisation to use the Sconul Access scheme please see our information for Sconul Access applicants on our website

PC shut down

Tell Us when computer come off

Thank you for taking the trouble to pass on your concerns. If you are working on a LRSE PC which needs to shut down (for administrative reasons) a shut down warning drops down from the top tool bar 5 minutes before shut down takes place. This should give you time to save your work to a USB or your network space.

Luton Library Silent Study Rooms

I am now in my third and final year however. In my second year i spent alot of my time in the library using the 'silent' area on 4th floor. Unfortunatly, many students are NOT silent and this distracts me, i do confront them politely and often they will then be quiet however can more be done by library or Uni staff? I resorted to booking the group rooms for silence to work... this then restricts groups from using the rooms. I am again in this area as i write this and there is loud laughter, people speaking n their mobile phones and loud discussion within the walkway areas. Can their be some kind of patrol put in place every half hour? I dont know what more to suggest but i leave my home with children to escape for a quiet area to study and write assignments and this year my dissertation! I should not have to be constantly distracted when placing myself on a silent floor!

Thank you for raising your concerns I can understand your frustration. Staff are here to ensure the study environment is appropriate to the design of the building. Both library staff and security will help you.
On level 4 there are two large silent study rooms (with only a few PCs) and 4 smaller group study rooms (with 6 PCs) with black booking kiosks on the outside. The silent study rooms are behind sound proof glass and have doors which also shut out noise and there are no walkways as such.

If you ever find the silent study rooms to be noisy please go to the customer service desk on level 1 or - during staffed hours - ring in the open area (with the books), Customer Service desk 01582 743488 and give your location.

The group study rooms are for groups so if a room is occupied by less than 4 people and there is sufficient demand that solitary person will be asked to leave.

There are also silent study rooms on level 5 and level 6

Guest Wifi

I was very disappointed (24th) as I was not able to connect to your Wifi. I came specifically to get some work done but left disappointed. The library staff was very helpful but could not get me connected even as guest. Please investigate and prevent repeat.

I can only apologise for the inconvenience. Please be assured that the problems have been logged and the University is working on a solution

Reserved Books

I reserved a couple of books today for collection at MK library (available at Bedford campus). Please, how long would they take to arrive?

Thank you for your enquiry.

All being well as you state they are “Available” on the library catalogue then they should be with you in 2 – 5 days (if they are on loan they will take longer)

Please keep an eye on your library account to see when they are “Ready for Pick Up”
log in with your usual University username and password

Luton Library - Read and Write Gold

I was searching for the Read and Write Gold on the 2nd, 4th and 5th floors but I could not find it on the desktop. Could you please check if it is.

Thank you for your enquiry. A Read and Write Gold icon is on the level 1 PCs' desktop. The app is available on all the library PCs but you need to search for it. Go into the
This PC
icon
Then the Apps folder
and then look for the RWG (Read and Write Gold link)

I believe a member of staff has written to you directly with this information. If you need further help please do not hesitate to contact us again.

Printing digital materials

I think its ridiculous that I have had an assignment which I need to analyse several journals. Every time I have tried to print the whole page shuts down and I lose the whole journal! Staff are clueless

Thank you for letting us know the problems you have been having. I am sorry you haven't got the help you have needed to print. I will say that the University has been experiencing some printing problems in recent weeks so it could be that has affected you. Without knowing the particular journals and process you used it is difficult for me to assess how to help you further via Tell Us

May I suggest that you go to a Study Hub drop in on digital resources for the best advice on downloading and printing digital journals
Luton Drop ins are on the mezzanine floor. Monday - Friday 10 - 16.00

The Study Hub What's On calendar is also a helpful reminder

https://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/studyhub@library/whats-on

In the mean time there is helpful advice on the Subject Guide pages for your course

Visitor ID card

Lamination peeling off my ID card have to use sellotape to prevent it toally falling off. Was told to pay £10 for replacement - feel its unfair as I only got card in March. This card is of poor quality - never before have I had a problem of this nature with my ID card please could you waive the cost and allow me to have a new card of higher quality

Thank you for raising your concerns. The library has issued many hundreds of cards and none have behaved like your card with out some mistreatment. Please bring your card to the Customer Service desk during staffed hours and staff will check to see if the damaged barcode will read. If it doesn't you will need to pay for a replacement. If it does staff will re-laminate it for you
