Luton Noisy study environment

I suggest that no socialising or group works should be allowed in silence area because there are areas designated for socializing and group works and students who want to chat have the option to chose to go to those areas while students like me who want to concentrate in studying have no other option (e.g. no home study) apart of the silence area. If I could do it at home I wouldn’t come to silence area....
Many thanks for your comments and suggestions.

Maintaining the study environment throughout the LRC is a co-operative effort between LRC staff, security and our customers. Learning Resources has put measures in place, namely electronic monitoring along with support from security to maintain the study environment. It is a priority for Learning Resources to provide a variety of study environments and I wholeheartedly agree that a silent area should be exactly that - silent.

I am concerned that you report in your email that you reported:
These days a group of noisy students attend in second floor almost every evening (e.g. on 7th and 8th Feb 13) and change it into a socialising pop. Security suggested me to email LRC’s manager as it seemed that they were not able to resolve the problem and stop the laud noise of singing laughing and laud talking from far desks to each other. This happens even deliberately to make more disturbances to those who have reported the matter to the security.
I will follow this up with security. I am more than happy that you have raised your concerns with me. A more immediate response however would have been for you to tell the staff on duty at the Customer Service desk on level 1 so they could attend and if necessary intervene.

In the new "University of Bedfordshire Student Partnership Agreement" in the section on Respect - we have a concern for all our students and staff

the Agreement states:
Students agree to:
Contribute to the community by being considerate to others and respecting the facilities and resources provided by the University and Students’ Union.
Conduct themselves respectfully towards their neighbours and the local community and in such a way that reflects well on the University community

this underlines the two way partnership between the University and the student community in creating a suitable learning environment for everyone.

I hope that you do not encounter any more problems on the silent floors but if you do please report it to staff at the level 1 Customer Service desk in the first instance.
I have tried to answer your question as thoroughly as possible. If you need me to expand further or if I have missed anything out please get back to me.

Issuing DVDs

If its 24/7 why we can not issue DVD's at any time? Because there are in the boxes, without customer service we cannot issue them.

The advent of 24/7 has been a welcome improvement to accessibility for students and staff to study space.  Self Service materials & services are available 24/7 anything that requires staff intervention is not going to be available after Learning Resources staff leave. It is not possible to make all services available 24/7.
For security reasons DVDs are kept in  security cases which need to be unlocked for issuing. As this needs staff intervention you are best advised to chose your DVDs and get them issued before LR staff leave. This web page advises when staff are on duty:

Following your comments however I will note this on our website to advise other customers to do this to avoid further disappointment

Luton: Slow PCs

The computers are working very slowly (windows, internet) I think you need to buy new equipment

I am sorry that you have been experiencing problems with Learning Resources' PCs. Network PCs take longer to log on that home PCs because they are part of a network. The specialist software installed for our students and staff to use also slows down PC performance. On occasions server problems will also have a slowing effect on PC performance.

A combination of these issues will make the PCs - on occasion - very slow

I can only apologise for this and ask you to be patient. Learning Resources PCs are replaced every 3 years to an excellent specification so please be assured that the PCs themselves are up to date and well maintained.

If you think a PC is performing particularly badly please email
 library.technical@beds.ac.uk
stating your campus, the floor you are on as well as the date and time. We can follow this up. If there are staff on duty at the Customer Service desk please report it to them for a speedier response.

Available services

am wondering if you can help me.
I am a disabled student and have a L&TSA which states:
The Learning Resource Centre (Library) at the University of Bedfordshire
Notes for Student
As a student who has declared a disability, you have assistive status. This allows you access to a range of additional support available from the Learning Resource Centres
  • Academic Liaison Librarians are subject specialists who can answer your research queries and questions and teach you how to use the resources effectively. To find out who your Academic Liaison Librarian is check the list:-
· I understand that information on how to use the Library and its associated resources can be found on the University of Bedfordshire’s Library web pages http://www.beds.ac.uk/studentlife/library (includes Putteridgebury and hospital education centres)

At my previous university I was allowed to borrow books for a longer period due to the time it takes me to read and study sections. Is this the case within this university?
Also can you advise me as to the additional support which is available as to the statement above.

Thank you for your enquiry. Welcome to the University of Bedfordshire.

There is a wealth of information available to you both in person and on-line. Details of the range of services available for Assistive students from Learning Resources appear in our Handbook and on our web pages. I would advise you to look through that information so you are aware of what is available to you

In answer to your specific query. University of Bedfordshire does not offer extended loan periods. You are however entitled to unlimited renewals (unless the item is requested by another customer). Fines will be waived but other associated sanctions will apply.
This means that you must remember to renew your books on time ie when they become due. Renewals are automated so please dial
