Visitor

I sent in my library application last Tuesday (23/10/18) and I was wondering how many days does it take for me to receive an email in regards to agreeing to the terms and conditions. I am just writing this email to follow up my application being sent because it has been a week and I really would like to start revising at the library as soon as possible.

Thank you for your enquiry

Self Issue Machines

Hello, I would like to comment on the system of borrowing books electronically. Is it possible to make it more simple. I have experience a few time of trying to input passport in to borrow library books which turned out that I could not be log in because of typo error as the screen is touch sensitive. Could I suggest a finger print to log in to borrow books instead of using a password?

Thank you for your comments and suggestions. University of Bedfordshire is on the cutting edge of self service library functions. Finger print log ins are not widely available for large institutions - although some schools do have a version of this. Universities need a robust process that will operate without staff for large numbers of people. Please persevere and I am sure small typos will be a thing of the past.

Having such a beautiful campus on my doorstep, I was wondering are there any schemes or public access, whereby I might be able to use an area of the library to study?

Luton Library - temperatures

The library is too warm too work in currently. Could something be done about this please?

The library suffers from being too hot for some students and too cold for others. There is a lot of temperature variation between floors so I would encourage you to find another cooler spot as the library adjusts to our rather unseasonable weather

Sconul Access

I hope someone can help me. I’m a part time masters student at the university of Edinburgh but I live in Bedford. A friend of mine told me that I may be able to use the library facilities as Bedford Uni because of a shared school scheme. I’ve asked at my university but they said I have to speak to someone at Bedford to find out if you do.
I wondered if someone could direct me to someone who knows if I can use the facilities?

Thank you for your enquiry. If Edinburgh is part of the Sconul Access scheme you can use that to gain free access. Ask Edinburgh about getting authorisation from the scheme and then follow our processes to gain membership at our Bedford Campus Library

I hope that helps

Luton Study Environment

i'm writing to bring your attention it's continuously for a week people (one or two ladies) are very noisy on the ground floor every afternoon. We're working on M floor but their voice are highly pollution in this library building. Please take a look and hope we are working in a library not a market.

Thank you for your enquiry. I am sorry that you cannot find the study environment you want on the mezzanine floor. It is an open area over the library reception and so it will always be noisy. There are no silence requirements enforceable for these floors.

The only spaces that offer quiet or silent study are the Silent Study Rooms on levels 4, 5 & 6. Please relocate to one of those rooms. I am sure they will meet your study style better than the mezzanine.

Bedford PCs

I have issues at Bedford library with pcs being really slow to log in and when trying to print printers are not available or it has the wrong printer.  This has been occurring since last year

Thanks for your enquiry apologies for any inconvenience caused. Please can you tell us what PC you were on so we can investigate? If you ask at the Customer Service desk the Technical support team will come down and try and sort any issues quickly.

Using resources

I need more support in the library. I’m fine with finding library books it’s the journals I’m struggling with the journals. My tutor said he wants us to use journals for our essays but I don’t really know what I’m doing or how to find a journal I have asked but he didn’t really explain properly. Can you help me please?

Thank you for contacting me. The immediate help I can direct you to includes
Study Hub Drop ins

Online study hub resources

Your academic liaison librarian - Janine Bhandol - will help you with specific use of psychology journals. She has created some online support for your subject

I suggest that you explore all of these options to find the one that suits you.

Alumnus Membership

I’m an alumni and I was looking at the options for joining the library.

I see there is an option for £30 that allows me to borrow books. However, I’m preparing to start a masters at UoB next year and I was wondering if this included access to the online journals?

Thank you for your enquiry. Although the information on our web page clearly states

There is no remote access to digital resources for UK or overseas alumni.

There is access to a limited range of digital resources on campus only via guest wifi and your own laptop/tablet/pnone

You do not need borrowing status (£30pa membership) for this

I hope this helps

Sconul Access

I did not understand how to use the access. I did give up as no one explained to me how I would use it. I started back at the University of Bedfordshire on the 1 of October. I was then told that I should print the email that was sent to enable me to go to the south bank which is walking distance from London Bridge and if there is a University near to Elephant and Castle would you please be kind enough to send me details on my bed's account.

Thank you for your enquiry. All the information you need is on our website
https://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/libraryservices/membership/students2

You should have received an email from the Sconul Access scheme giving you authorisation to apply to Universities in the scheme for Reference membership. You need to take this email as a print out or on your phone to any institution you wish to use and ask them what their access arrangements for Sconul Access students are. You can check before visiting by visiting their websites

I hope this helps

Luton Library - study environment

Silent areas are noisy. Students talk on mobile phones and listen to loud music I complained to staff on 6th floor but said cannot do anything as student will abuse and be disrespectful

Luton Campus Library has silent study rooms on level 4, 5 & 6 their use is dependent on being silent. Sanctions are in place for non compliance, The rest of 4, 5 & 6 are not silent however and you cannot expect them to be. I am very concerned that you were told by staff that they would not assist you please send me details of date and time of this incident and I will follow it up.

Bedford Library - rolling stack

The Library needs to get the Literature rolling stack working, it's a massive inconvenience and is hindering Literature lectures; especially as shops are out of many books due to demand. Literature students NEED BOOKS!

Unfortunately due to an electrical fault the Bedford rolling stack has been out of order for a week. It has been reported and a part is now on order. It may a little while longer until it is mended.

Staff are prepared to move the rolling stack and are more than happy to retrieve items on your behalf but this will need to be done during staffed hours

Returners registration problems

I'm just starting my 3rd year of this degree and have a problem logging into Discover.

I am able to log in to BREO using the password I updated in the summer, but the same password will not allow me into Discover/Library Catalogue.  I've tried some old passwords in case it's reverted, but they don't work either.

One other issue - the part time students on this course are unable to re-register at the moment because the system has not loaded our units or fees - we are all in the same boat.

Thank you for your enquiry. Sorry to read that you are having problems with DISCOVER I have two questions for you

  1)      Have you recently updated your logon password – or have you missed a notification to do this (please check your University emails)?
  2)      Have you had an email from the University with the address
Please look for it (in you University email account) if it  doesn’t ring a bell. If you have that email please follow its instructions

It might be worth changing your password again as it could be that your accounts are out of synchronisation

Information here – and link to the page

Signage

I visited your fabulous new library for the first time today and was a little shocked to notice that the big red boards that give details of all the services that are on each level of the library have a pretty bad grammatical error on them, that you may well be aware of... At the bottom of the lists of services it says "PC's". There should be no apostrophe after PC. I felt compelled to mention this as it is a university library and these sign boards are pretty prominent and important. I do hope you'll forgive me for pointing this out. Thank you.

Thank you for pointing this out. The signs were done by someone who is used to using the apostrophe as a space marker as well as a punctuation mark. This didn't sit well with the library team and they were supposed to be corrected over the summer I will look into this to see where we are with this job.
