Text book citations

I was wondering if someone could help me understand what the numbers in brackets at the end of a sentence from a text book paragraph mean i have copied and pasted an example.

Symptom dimensions actually reflect groups of symptoms that generally occur together and may explain a part of the phenotypic variation between patients [4,5,6,7,8]. First concepts to classify symptomatology stem from Kraepelin’s original distinction between affective and non-affective psychoses with ‘dementia praecox’ [9].

Thank you for your enquiry. If you look at the end of the chapter you will find a reference list, showing where the information has come from. Each item in the reference list will be numbered. Where there is more than one number [4, 5, 6, 7, 8], this means that multiple sources have provided that information.
