Referencing

Please could you advise me on how to reference the following

The document you want to reference is an article published in a journal.  The referencing guidelines explains how to set-out a journal reference here:

As with a book you start with the author's surname and initial.  In this instance you have two authors - Cihak, D.F. & Ayres, K.M.

The publication year is in the header at the top of the page - (2010).

Then you type the article's title in single quotation marks -  'Comparing pictorial and video-modeling activity schedules during
transitions for students with autism spectrum disorders'.

The journal title comes next and this is in italics to distinguish it from the rest of the text, because anyone interested in reading more about your topic, would use that title to track down the source.  Journals are often give volume and sometimes issue numbers to pinpoint which edition in a particular publication run an item appeared in.  The header tells you that this item appeared in volume 4 between pages 763 and 771.  So, as there is no issue number in your example, these details would be set out like this.

Research in Autism Spectrum Disorders 4 (2010) 763–771

As you are reading an electronic copy of an article, you also need to include some extra details

  • Name of electronic journal supplier
  • [Online]
  • Available at:
  • URL of collection
  • (Accessed: date month year)
I'm not clear from the URL you supplied, which route you used to locate this article and therefore which electronic journal supplier you have used.  The URL does not look like you've used the University's links to this journal or gone through Science Direct remotely.  However, if you can't remember your route, just put 'Science Direct' as that is the main host site for Elsevier titles like this.  The point of including info like this in a reference is to help your readers to read your source materials, so SD is fine in this context.
Then you put '[Online].  Available at:' and paste in the persistent URL (ie stable) if you know what that is.  If you've not got a record of it, the URL from the address bar which you've pasted in your email will have to do.
And then finally in open curled brackets right 'Accessed:' and add in the date, month and year you looked at this website.  This is very important, especially without a persistent URL or digital object identifier (DOI), in case the portal you've quoted in your email times out.
