PAD Queues

The wait time to see someone at pad is really long

http://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/help/pad
Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback about the drop-in that is being offered by PAD. I am sorry that you had to wait in order to see a member of the team. We are currently in the process of recruiting 5 additional PAD Tutors and as soon as these start future waiting times will be significantly reduced.

DISCOVER

1) I am having difficulty saving journals into my folder as I collected over 20 and now it says there are 0 in there.
2) Some of the journals are not avaliable as full texts and the link to them Please may you tell me how to access journals another way if the link to their websites are not working

1) I will assume that you mean DISCOVER not RefWorks.  If you you've clicked the Sign In button at the start of your session then it should remember everything you've done.
Have you tried it on more than one browser?

However, as a back up plan, remember you can always send items to your RefWorks account. It's the Export icon in DISCOVER. That copies across everything from the citation (who/when/where) and also the abstract and permalink (URL) so you can retrieve the item. Refworks also has the nice feature that you can create subfolders with names. So if you find a useful article you can put it in a folder called 'Essay for J Smith' and a folder called 'Reflective Practice' - it's not like Windows folders. DISCOVER only lets you have one folder so it can get unwieldy.

2) You were not looking at a journal article but a policy paper published by a Federal department in America. Unfortunately, there is is a shutdown of federal departments in America presently (due to disagreements about the budget and Obama's healthcare plans) and this has affected access to everything from national parks, cancer trials and, unfortunately, the ERIC website. When the shutdown reopens reports like that will become available again. If you save the title (What can schools do to motivate students) and paste that into the DISCOVER box it will then take you to the ERIC full text link.

Aylesbury BREO & Timetable

Breo can be confusing, would like the timetable to be easily and prefer one timetable rather than different ones.

Study Environment at Luton - talking on silent floors

LRC - ICT - 2nd floor, people talking on phone too loudly

Many thanks for your comment. I sympathise with what you say. It would be more appropriate if you spoke to staff about this so they could do something about this on the spot. Tell Us has a guaranteed response of 2 days so waiting that long is not really effective.

Levels 2 & 3 of the Luton LRC are silent floors. No amount of talking is acceptable. Phone conversations are supposed to take place on the landing outside the lifts. If other customers are making any noise please report it to staff. There are staff patrols approx every half hour and the area is electronically monitored for noise.

A member of staff has just patrolled and has spoken to 2 students who had "forgotten" they were on a silent floor

Action is taken towards anyone who disregards the silence requirement. I hope this reassures you. Please tell staff directly if you experience any further problems (which I hope you don't).

Luton - Private study space

There needs to be more access to private study space. Bookable for group work.

Many thanks for your comment. Learning Resources is trying to address the requirement for private study space by offering the silent study floors on levels 2 & 3 of the Luton LRC. There is no capacity for bookable group or individual study rooms in the current LRC.

There are group study rooms available in the Campus Centre and I would advise you to take advantage of them.

When the IT Suite reopens you will see that the new furniture offers a variety of learning spaces that would be useful to groups. May I recommend that you investigate this when it re-opens 17.10.13?

Library Account problems

I am a new Student who came to the registration on Saturday

I have tried to log into the Library to obtain an e book but for some reason my user id is not on the system

Am I correct in saying that (1) My User Id is my Student Number and (2) My Password is my DOB

I would appreciate your help as I need to view the book of CORDER (NICHOLAS) Learning to Teach Adults

Thank you for your enquiry. I am sorry that you have been having trouble with logging into your library account. I have just checked it and it seems fine today.

I will say that it takes 24 hours to create your University accounts so if you registered on Saturday it is just possible that they didn't get uploaded until Monday ie ready for today.

Please try again
username is your University ID number
password is your date of birth in the format 2 digits per element: day month year ie if you were born 1st January 1999 your password would be 010199

If you are still having problems please ring Bedford Campus Library and staff will talk you through the problem

BREO - Aylesbury

Breo is slightly confusing to use and e.mails to tutors do not always send.

I would advise you to talk to your tutor about how its best to contact her and get her to reassure you about BREO. Unless you get a message saying that the e-mail hasn't sent you can safely assume that it has gone to the right place. You need to talk to you tutor about this
