Luton Library - study enviroment

Just a quick query. I just want to know if I able to use the group study spaces if they are available and I am not part of a group?

I feel there are not many large desks in the silent areas only the narrow computer spaces. It's great that there are so many large desks outside the silent areas but I really need the quite to concentrate and the group areas seem to be unoccupied in the evenings. I personally can't work so close to the computer screen and there isn't much space to spread out. It's going to be a nightmare when deadline season approaches and were doing all-nighters. Where am I supposed to put my books and snacks?

Many thanks for your enquiry

The group configurations of furniture in the open library spaces is open for any use on a first come first served basis. If there was pressure on space then individuals may be asked to move from group space.. It would be reviewed on a cases by case basis if required.

The bookable group rooms however are for groups of a minimum of 4 people

May I ask which floor you are working on? We have two types of PC provision – high density where students will be sitting very close together. This is mainly available on level 1,2, and 3 although it is available on all floors. Standard PC provision with space either side of the PC is available from level 4, 5 and 6. Its sounds to me that this might suit you better rather than sit uncomfortably in the group sofa arrangements. There is some pair working work station which will offer more space too. Please wander around the library to find the different options available to you.

The silent room provision should be part of our standard offer (ie with space either side of the PC) and this is specifically to discourage chatting or any noise at all.

Please remember is it is good study practice to take a break to have your snacks and I would suggest that you go to the ground floor and eat there. There is proper disposal facilities there and a bit of movement may help you rest your eyes from the screen and let your body move a little bit. If you have to eat at your desk please remember hot or messy food is not allowed anytwhere in the library except the cafe

Staff are happy to take you on a tour at any time. Please ask at the Customer Service desk on level 1.
