Fines

I think that there is not enough books copies for the MBA course because of the big numbers of students in the course and student don't return the books on time so I suggest that the library should raise the fine on returning books.

Thank you for raising your concerns with me. I am sorry that you have been having problems securing loans for your research.

May I suggest that if you find an item you want and its on loan you reserve it straight away. Even if there's a waiting list for that item at least you get a chance to use it. You are allowed to reserve up to 6 items at a time.

http://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/libraryservices/availableservices/reserve

If there is a long queue of people waiting for a reserved item you could check the Public
Library catalogue to see if you may borrow that item from them

https://vpoint.culturalservices.net/bedford/#sthash.FSxCAHOq.dpuf

You could identify list of alternative titles. Check the catalogue number of the item you want
at University and see what other books at the same number are on the library shelves,

You could purchase your own copy of a particularly useful book. It is expected that postgraduate students will purchase some books.

lrweb.beds.ac.uk/libraryservices/availableservices/reserve/high-demand-holds

Your Academic Liason Librarian makes sure that most of the new purchases for the MBA are 7 day loans to promote a fast turn around. If you experience problems with a particular title please contact him with the details so he can consider making it a Reference copy so you may consult it in the LRC

If As a service Learning Resources is reviewing our fines regime and careful consideration is being given to having bigger fines for reserved overdue items

Late arrival

I am a PhD student, I missed most of introduction week , there are some problems with me using e-library,

I have tried to search for conferences and papers related to my topic in IEEE .I have found them but it's not possible to open them for reference. For example I have searched for the terms like "evolutionary computation" and "genotype and phenotype for evolutionary models" and there is few documents related to them but couldn't open them. It seems that it is available online but needs a subscription. I used uni network and from different user  but still unable to access it. Please can I get an appointment to get this sorted and also familiarise myself with the use of different resources in the e library.

Thank you for contacting me. I am sorry that you seem to have been having problems finding research materials. Am I correct in thinking that you are using the prescribed route ie
library catalogue: http://library.beds.ac.uk/

and still having no luck?

I think you need to have a chat with your Academic Liaison Librarian Chris Whitfield, he will rehearse the research routes and authorisations needed for University materials

If its appropriate Chris will also outline our Document Supply Service which will give you access to materials outside the University

In the mean time may I draw your attention to the Subject Guide Chris has created for your subject area

There is a wealth of information on these web pages to help you. This may be of interest to you too

I would suggest that you contact Chris with some urgency and make arrangements to discuss your needs with him

Fine

I am unable to renew my books online due to exceeding my loan date, however I am unable to attend university this week due to other commitments.

I was wondering if there was any other day of renewing them online to avoid further fees.

Thank you for your enquiry - sorry no I cannot renew your 4 items on your behalf and there is no other way to renew them.
You borrowed them on 23.3.14 renewed them once and they were due back 2.5.14. You have had two overdue notices to remind you to bring the books back.

As long as you bring the books back next week the fine will remain as it is

If the items are 5 weeks late then you will be billed for each item and your library account will be blocked. If you bring them back next week you will avoid this.

Billed item

I have just received a letter stating that I have to pay to replace a book I am not yet finished with using. I have renewed this book now and I do not want to have to pay to replace the book as I will be returning it.

Can you please deduct the £20 from this fine?

You took the item out on 24.2.14 you renewed it twice and it was then due back 15.4.14. You have had 3 overdues since the item became overdue. It has now reached Billed Status as it is more than 5 weeks overdue hence bill of £20 being added to your account.
You cannot renew Billed items. The bill will be removed once the item is returned.

Putteridgebury LRC - friendly staff

Chris, who works in the  PB campus library in the afternoons, is a absolute credit to the university. When ever we go in to get a book he is always friendly and cheerful and can't do enough to help us! Makes looking for books a lot easier and in turn makes doing assignments far easier!

I want to thank you for the kind words you said about Chris Carter at Putteridgebury LRC.  Your thoughts are important to us, but we're especially pleased when the feedback is positive.

We try hard to provide the best possible service to our customers and their satisfaction is our reward.  We are honoured to be part of your journey with the University of Bedfordshire. We really appreciate you taking the time to let us know we're doing something right.

Luton: noise on Silent floor

I want to raise my concerns to the 'silent' area that you have on the second floor. I am trying to revise for my final year exam which is on Friday but I can't because it is so loud. Students do not follow the rule of not talking, and I am constantly surrounded by people on their phones and talking to their friends. It sounds like I am in the LRC downstairs. The librarians do not help because they are hardly in the library. I have been here since 9am and I have not seen one librarian. This is really not helping my revision and I would like to be able to come to university and know that I will be able to have a successful day of revision. Please can you do something about this.

Thank you for bringing your concerns to my attention. First of all I would like to apologise for the inconvenience caused by these problems.
Secondly I would like to be clear that we take care to ensure that important matters such as this are properly managed and dealt with. It is most appropriate to speak to staff about this so they could do something about this on the spot. Overnight this would mean asking security for support. Otherwise please raise your concerns with staff at the level 1 Customer Service desk

Levels 2 & 3 of the Luton LRC are silent floors. No amount of talking is acceptable. All  conversations are supposed to take place on the landing outside the lifts. When library staff are on duty please report noise problems directly to them. During staffed hours there are staff patrols approx every half hour and the area is electronically monitored for noise.

http://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/libraryservices/availableservices/study-env

Level 2 & 3  were made Silent Study areas at the request of the student body. Provision is made for group and social learning elsewhere in the LRC so there is an expectation for students to choose their preferred study environment and abide by the requirements of that space. This is harder to monitor overnight as the building is patrolled by security. Any student caught breaking the Silence requirement is allowed one verbal warning after that Library sanctions come into effect. Student behaviour was a key theme at the Student Union conference November 2013. This is a university concern which is being looked at by staff, students themselves and the Student Union. Action is taken towards anyone who disregards the silence requirement.

Reservation

I had a very wonderful experience in Beds library. I had never been into library since 25 years but the Beds facility and fast system is speechless. I got the book after 2 days as reserved. I am so happy.

More Print Options on webprint, specifically printing in A5

Webprint is designed to only print the document (A4 or A3) but not change the paper size. If the document is in A5 it will print A5 on A4 paper.

Bedford - overnight library use

There is still far too much chatting on the 2nd floor this needs to be stamped out

The library is cold at night. Why do all the automatic windows open fully especially at night? Also noise from outside very audible and students can be very roudy

Thank you for bringing your concerns to my attention. First of all I would like to apologise for the inconvenience caused by these problems.

The automatic window have been reported to our Facilities department and they will give attention to this issue

I cannot do anything about external noise. i appreciate open windows would exacerbate this but you could move to a different area of the library

Wifi

No wifi available for the past 2 days! will nto connect annoying when dissertations are due soon

Thank you for taking the trouble to tell me about the problems you have been having with University WiFi. I understand how frustrating it must be for the connectivity not to live up to your expectations
The University has a cross Campus project to improve the WiFi connectivity at every Campus. None the less in high traffic areas with each individual having an average of 2 -4 WiFi dependent items, the University bandwidth is bound to struggle.
May I suggest that you move to slightly quieter area where the connectivity might be more consistent. Or use a University PC while you are on Campus or use Eduroam which should be a more stable connection.

Reduced loans

The library is only allowing 2 books out at a time. I am a part time student visiting uni once a week. I should be able to have my books on hold until tomorrow.

Thank you for your comment. When we experience problems with our library management system - which fortunately, is very rare - we can only offer manual issues. When this happens there has to be a restriction on number of items that may be borrowed per person.
I do apologise for the inconvenience this caused you. I do agree that it isn't the standard of service we'd expect to provide. It is being looked into by the University's IT department to help avoid this happening again.
Meanwhile talk to Learning Resources staff about your circumstances (in the unlikely event that this happens again) to see if they can allow up to 4 items on manual loan

Bedford - more silent space

More silent library space ie more places like the 3rd floor with computers and silence.

Thank you for your enquiry. As you know level 2 at Bedford Campus Library has become a
silent study area. PC use creates noise so it was a conscious decision to move some of the PCs from level 2 to different floors. There are 22 PCs on that floor but there another 150 PCs on the other library floors. In addition there are 42 PCs in the Learning Hub. You are welcome to use your own laptop or tablet in the Library there are specific plug in power points available on every floor. If you cannot find any please ask staff on the Customer Service Desk (ground floor) for help. You cannot plug your device into the the University network so please use WiFi if required

There are a good proportion of PCs to students at Bedford. We rarely have no PCs left for customers to use. Please check all the library floors for available machines. We have introduced a PC booking service to make it easier for custom
ers to get a machine when they need it most.

WiFI

No wifi - struggling to sign in, took a while. Cheers

Windows 7

Please please stop messing around with us by changing these computer settings. Just keep things simple for us.

As of January 2014 XP is no longer supported by Microsoft so the University has to change its operating system. Windows 7 inevitably has some appearance and functionality changes which are bit of a shock to start with. I am sure that after a few uses you will find Windows 7 as simple as XP

Windows 7

Works fantastic just different from previous software

Glad you like the change. As XP is no longer supported by Microsoft the University has to change its operating system.
