Access to Learning Resources

Students can enter the library without scanning the ID

Access to Learning Resources is only available to authorised people. It is a University regualtion and and part of the Learning Resources code of conduct. Everyone is required to scan their ID or membership card when they enter Learning Resources. This is to ensure that our primary customer base has ease of access to the resources, print & digital materials and study space they are entitled to. If anyone gets in without ID or a membership card and they are found they will be asked to leave Learning Resources

Bedford - bookable room

There should be a discussion room in the library purely for final year students. Alternatively the discussion room available form April to June for just final years. Computer in Gateway discussion room is also an alternative.

Thank you for raising your suggestion. There is a bookable room on the ground floor of Bedford Library which I would advise you to use. As its only one room and demand is high book your time slot sooner rather than later. Enquire at the Customer Service desk.

Ebooks - daily limit

Restricting number of e-books in a day - we have a dissertation to write and cannot use e-books at home

As a result of your enquiry Learning Resources has taken steps to change the standard settings of 5 items per person per day to 10 as a temporary measure during the dissertation period.

This will be discussed further later, with a view to keeping access at this level

Hopefully his adjustment should help you.

Ebooks - access

Restricting the use of E-books on a day is ridiculous

The number of items per person per day is determined by our licencing agreements with our digital providers. As a result of your enquiry Learning Resources has taken steps to change the standard settings of 5 items per person per day to 10 as a temporary measure during the dissertation period.

This will be discussed further later, with a view to keeping access at this level

Hopefully his adjustment should help you.

Luton - External Customers

I study at Queen Mary University London, I was trying to gain membership through 'sconul' however it says my university doesn't participate in it. As I live in Luton and my university is in London I thought applying to Bedfordshire would save a lot of money, hassle and travel! I was wondering if there is any other way I can get a membership pass? Perhaps if I bring my university ID (for proof) and talk to a member of staff in the university. I'm desperately hoping for a pass as revising in Bedfordshire uni is much more convenient and hassle free, I can assure you I'm a good student whole stay out of any trouble!

Thank you for your enquiry. As St Mary's isn't part of the Sconul Access scheme. You may purchase membership if you require study space,  details are on our website

Reference access £25 p a

I must advise you that we are declining access for external users at our Luton Campus
University of Bedfordshire’s Luton campus will be closed to External Customers – including Sconul Access and M25 customers – Monday 15 May to Sunday 14 August 2016. This is due to the relocation of Learning Resources to a new library. This will include processing applications for membership as well as access to the Luton Campus

I hope that helps

Bedford - praise for staff

Just to say a very BIG thank you for the support of all the Bedford library staffs since using the library law wing. The assistance of Sarah Duffy who was the staff I met on my first visit had been very invaluable and I am so grateful having passed all the law exams in one swipe.

Thank you

Bedford - PCs on silent floor

Do students really need to bring their laptops to the silent floor and seat in front of a pc that they are not gona use? It is a small number of pcs available so was great if this was avoided. The library staff is so instructed to shut up students, do they could be instructed to talk to students about this?

Thank you for raising your concerns. Its a good point. Some students do use two (or more devices to study so they may not be using the desktop the moment you see them but they are alternating between their laptop and the desktop.

I will discuss this with the library manager at Bedford to see if there is a way forward with signage.
