Assistive status

I have just received this letter regarding outstanding payment because of a book being overdue, I however have unlimited access to any books and can keep them for as long as i want due to Dyslexia.
I asked before I took any books out whether I had any limitations on this, for example having to return then retake a book out and was told there were none, therefore I will not be paying the fine.
I have received no notifications that the books are due back not have a revived a message to say I have to renew it.

I would appreciate someone to shed some light upon this.

 Thank you for your email.
You state
I have unlimited access to any books and can keep them for as long as i want due to Dyslexia.

As an student with assistive status our policy states:
Assistive Customers are entitled to unlimited renewals (unless the item is requested by another customer). Fines will be waived but other associated sanctions will apply.

You need to renew the items you have on loan so they don't become overdue. If you forget to renew the items you have on loan and they become overdue you do not have to pay fines. BUT if the items are more than 5 weeks overdue they become Billed items and you will be sent a replacement bill. This is an "other associated sanction". This sanction should encourage you to return the overdue items. When you do this the bill will disappear and you will not have any outstanding fines.

Sconul Access

I am a University of Bedfordshire PhD student living in Bristol, UK. I conduct much of my writing-up at the University of Bristol. To continue I must have a current SCONUL with Band A.

My SCONUL Band A card expired on 02.07.2015.

Is it possible to renew this for a futher one, two or three years by distance (otherwise I will have to make a six hour round road trip by car - and as a partner in the European Green Capital 2015 - Bristol UK - that will be a disaster)?

May I reassure you that Sconul Access was primarily created for students like yourself so a lot of the admin may easily be done remotely.

If you follow the advice on our web pages
http://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/libraryservices/visiting/sconulaccess

and check the advice on the Sconul website

then apply online

When you get your approval email you can print it out or show an electronic version to staff at Bristol and go through their membership requirements.

If you have any questions please get back to me

Butterfield - noisy study environment

I was in the Butterfield library today and the amount of noise coming from the reception area is unacceptable. I am desperately trying to complete my dissertation but found it very difficult with the disruption to concentrate. I'm not trying to be a kill joy but I have travelled far to use the facilities and make the most of it. I understand that a small amount of noise will occur but it is very hard to tolerate.

I hope it comes to their attention and be more considerate.

Thank you for contacting me and letting me know the problems you are dealing with. Choosing your study environment is essential in trying to do your best work. I completely understand your choice to work in Silence. Unfortunately Butterfield Campus does not have capacity for silent study. This means that – unavoidably – study areas will be noisier than you would like.

Virtually every course of study has an element of group work that requires appropriate space for students to work together. Each student of the University has their own learning style. This style may change as an individual progresses through academia or according to the assignment in hand. Some people like to work in noisy environments. Some people need to talk as part of their learning style. As a University of adults self monitoring is a part of that progression. One person's idea of quiet or silent is quite different to another. Setting a standard of behaviour when applied across many individuals the environment is not going to be quiet.

May I suggest that you use the Luton Campus for your dissertation write up? Not only is it open 24/7 x 365 it has two silent floors (levels 2 & £) which are monitored electronically to ensure that the study environment is maintained.

Provisional place access

I was wondering if a provisionally registered student can borrow books from the library, without having a library card.

Many thanks for your enquiry. Congratulations on gaining a place at the University of Bedfordshire. I hope you have a happy and successful course of study.

I am sorry to have to say that there is no loan facility for provisional students. Your University ID is your key to the services University of Bedfordshire students enjoy.

If you require reference access to the print resources please talk to staff on the campus you plan to study at,

or contact your academic liaison librarian.

Bedford - Resources

There is a chronic shortage of books for our faculty, to the extent of having no books at all for some modules, like pre-litigation,for an educational institution that is shocking.

Thank you for raising your concerns, after all if we didn't know there was a problem how could we improve? The University of Bedfordshire is expanding its range of e resources year on year. At the moment the University of Bedfordshire is proud to stock: 4,000+ ebooks; 30,000+ ejournals; 80+ databases; University past examination papers since 1999; edissertations via the University repository. If you have any specific titles you would like the University to stock please talk to your Academic Liaison Librarian Alan Bullimore

or use our Recommend a Resource facility http://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/contact/recommend-a-resource
