Ebooks on demand

very impressed with the on demand service from the library - after my review had timed out, was given access to the book immediately my request was sent. Thank you!

Thanks for your positive feedback. Learning Resources has over 33,000 ebooks available on demand you can find them by searching for them as normal on the library catalogue or DISOVER they will appear with all the other ebooks and books.
On demand ebooks look like other ebooks, except that you need to click on the Preview button. Then when your preview has finished you can click on Request Access. This will automatically trigger a one week rental of the ebook, paid for by Learning Resources. When two students have requested a rental of a book it is automatically purchased, again paid for by Learning Resources. This is a great service for students because:
  • you can choose the books the library buys
  • these ebooks are available immediately
  • you can always find a book for your topic
  • you can read an ebook anywhere with an internet connection
  • any number of students can read an ebook at once
  • a lot of extra money is being spent on making sure you get the books you need.

Digital Library Passwords

I have tried to open a discovery account numerous times now. At first it wouldn't accept my choice of password (even though they were progressively more complex). Now it says that my username choice is already in use!

I would be grateful for any help!!

I am sorry that you are having problems setting up your DISCOVER account. It would seem – ironically – that EBSCO have “strengthened” the procedure for creating accounts and passwords, to make it more secure, to the point where it’s very difficult to actually come up with a valid password. They have had plenty of feedback to the effect that it’s overkill for this kind of account, and it’s turning users off, but, they maintain it’s a good thing. Since it’s an EBSCO account, and Learning Resources don’t maintain it in any way, there’s not really anything we can do. The database covers all EBSCO account users all over the world, not just University of Bedfordshire students, so it is quite likely a username will be already taken.

Learning Resources is putting together some advice to help devise another username and try again. It will be posted on our

You could try again yourself until that blog post has been made.

Sorry I can’t be more helpful at the moment.

Digital Library

I have just tried to request to online books, one being Batting: how to play, coach and win and the other being Globalizing Cricket: Englishness, empire and identity.
I was wondering if you could sort these books out in order for me to be enabled to view these.

Thanks for your enquiry. These titles are ebooks. That means that they are available digitally from any PC/laptop with internet access
Our ebooks are all listed in our catalogue in the same way as the printed books.  You can access them by doing a search on the library catalogue just like a "normal" book.
When the search list comes up click on the item you want. This will take to the item record click on the link on this page and sign in with your usual University username and password

Luton - book returns unit

I would be gratefully if the library would consider introducing two or three points, where books could be returned. This would make it easy for books to be returned and it would also give a receipt.

Many thanks for your suggestion. Luton LRC will only be in its current location for another 11 months so there will be no changes to the current space. In the new library - L Block - there will be book returns units at both entry points to the library.

F Block's book return unit is on the ground floor of the LRC (Park Street end) which is easy for students to return their items without having to come into the main LRC space. Once the books have been returned a receipt is issued for your records.

Office 2013

Could you please the Office application in LRC computers. It was very good that you last updated to Windows 7 but a lot of us disappointed to see that an Office application which is over 5 years old to be installed on these machines. CATS faculty already using Office 2013 for almost a year.

Thank you for raising your concerns. The University does not have any immediate plans to roll out Office 2013 to all student PCs. Any software product being considered by the University has to be robustly tested to ensure that it is fit for networked use.

The CATS installation of Office 2013 you refer to is a test installation by ICT in conjunction with CST
