Bedford - Praise for staff

I would like to thank Kathryn Gray and the Educational Librarians for all their help recently in locating two books. The team did not give up in the search for an elusive book, that had appeared as 'on hold' on my ticket but had gone astray! They emailed me on a number of occasions to update me on what was happening. The team even very quickly managed to get an e-book, as one reservation was difficult to get hold of. Now everyone can access it! Thank you to the team for all the hard work!

want to thank you for the kind words you said about Kathryn and the Educational Librarians

 at Bedford Campus Library.
Your thoughts are important to us, but we're especially pleased

 when the feedback is positive.

Luton: Study Environments

The silent study area, downstairs, near the 'Art and Design' bookshelves is not clearly marked as 'Silent'. Am i wrong in thinking this is silent when the door used to enter this area says 'Silent Area'?. Many times students sit here to have group discussions and i have noticed the students who are trying to work in silence are disrupted, including me. As there is no staff here, they cannot keep an eye on this. I suggest putting up more signs to say it is a silent area as just outside the door, we have a very nice area for group work. ~Many thanks

There is no Silent Study near the Art & Design books at Luton LRC. Silent Study is located and clearly signposted on levels 2 & 3 of Luton LRC
Levels 2 & 3 of the Luton LRC are the silent floors. No amount of talking is acceptable. Phone conversations are supposed to take place on the landing outside the lifts. I appreciate that when library staff are on duty you can report noise problems directly. During staffed hours there are staff patrols approx every half hour and the area is electronically monitored for noise.

Record Loans

Keep record of the last 10 books so that it is easier to do the reference of the assessments

Thank you for your enquiry the University's Library Management System does not store previous loans for data protection reasons so I am sorry I am unable to help you with this.

I would advise however that you log every item you borrow, download or read into RefWorks. RefWorks is a web based reference management system that allows you to create and manage your references; import references from databases import references from the University's library catalogue or DISCOVER and automatically formats reference lists in a chosen style (such as Harvard).
This is good academic practice and it means you can populate your assignment bibliographies with ease

Bedford staplers

This is an email to highlight the current issue concerning staplers and hole punches. I would like to know why the Luton Library allows a stapler on each floor however, the bedford library we are not allowed to remove them from reception? This is rather frustrating when I have about 50/60 questionnaires and paperwork to staple. I think all students are responsible enough to be allowed a stapler/hole punch on each floor as it would make filing a lot easier. If there will be no change then please could you provide a reason as to why? Surely as a university as a whole all rules should be equal?

Thank you for your enquiry. May I clarify that Luton LRC has staplers and hole punches for use on level 1 only. Single floor access is just the same as it is at Bedford (there is the ground floor). Both these locations are close to the Customer Service desk on each Campus. Allowing these items to go to other parts of the building consistently results in them being left away from the point of enquiry with a high potential of getting lost.
These stationery items are not that expensive - may I suggest that you consider purchasing your own stapler to help you with your questionnaires.

Luton: Macs in the silent areas

In October 2014 and January 2015 you said - can we have a Mac on one of the Silent floors.

I am happy to report that there is now a Mac on the 3rd floor of Luton LRC

Bedford Library study environment

Would it possible to remind the Bedford library users that the library should be kept quiet or relatively so when they are using it. On Saturday 24th there was a large number of students who decided to be as rowdy as they wished on the 1st floor from 9pm to midnight, which was rather disruptive. There wasn't much that security could do because when approached, the students would say if one wants silence they should go to the 2nd floor silent study area. Although the silent study area is there, it is not ideal when one has to work with a partner on the same paper and needs to talk about the work which we can do on the 1st and 3rd floor. There are study rooms but these are often booked. Today, Saturday 31st Jan, there was a student on the phone for a good 10mins chatting with a friend about their planned night out. I had to ask him to take the call just outside by the stairs, which he wasn't very happy about it. If possible, can you please remind students or put signs up that using phones or causing disruption in the library is not allowed? I think a reminder would be beneficial because some assume that there being a silent study area means they can do as they please on the other floors. The librarians and security are great but there is only so much they can do if there are no clear rules on display. Thank you.

First of all I would like to apologise for the inconvenience caused by this problem.

We take care to ensure that important matters such as this are properly managed and dealt with.

Levels 2 of the Bedford Library is a silent floor and it may be advisable to study there out of staffed hours
