Alumnus Access

 You said

I am an alumni and was wondering if I am already allowed to use the library or is there still restrictions?

We said

Thank you for your enquiry. I have to advise you that the University of Bedfordshire is not open for visitor access/membership for the foreseeable future.

Due to the current exceptional circumstances a part of the University of Bedfordshire’s phased return to campus includes a prohibition on Visitors for the foreseeable future. This includes the library. Please check our website for updates. We have ceased to accept or process membership applications or renewals for external membership. Please monitor this page to see when this will be lifted.

I was just enquiring as to if the silent rooms are availiable to use on a walk in basis or if they need to be pre booked? I haven't used the library other than to pick books up before now.

Library cleaners - complaint

 You said

I am writing to file a complaint against the library cleaning staff. My friend and I came in early this morning to complete our dissertations which are due tomorrow. At 10am a cleaner came onto 5th floor to clean. Once she was on the floor, she started swinging chairs around to move them, resulting in them crashing into tables and walls, not only this but she was on the phone talking extremely loudly and disrupting others whilst they were studying.

Once she had left the floor, she came back a few minutes later to vacuum where she proceeded to tell me "Move", disrupting my work. She was still talking on the phone as this was happening. She then told my friend to move. My friend told her that she shouldn't be on her phone whilst she was working and that she was disrupting those who were working on the floor to which this employee told my friend "Get on with your work" which she was unable to do because she had been made to move away from her desk.

I understand in these current times that the library needs to be clean, and the staff are doing what they can to abide by the rules however, it would be wise to ask the staff who work here to be respectful to those who are working and remember social distancing.

We said:

Thank you for your email and for raising your concerns. I have flagged the issue with our Facilities colleagues and they have investigated your complaint and can report:

Level 5 library is designated 1st area to clean.

  • Agreed arrived at 10am.
  • Did not “swing chairs causing them to crash”, but did move some to “tidy up”/”put back where they belong”
  • Was NOT talking on the phone at the time
  • Wiped all surfaces with Alcohol solution as directed by rota.
  • Cleaner did ask, “excuse me/can you move for vacuum”… English not great
  • Student did not move.
  • Did not say to student “get on with your work” said “I get on with my work, sorry”….(meaning for inconvenience).
  • Cleaner said if not satisfied to direct questions to supervisor.
  • Again not speaking on the phone
  • Was upset at thought she had inadvertently upset someone…and apologised if her poor English affected this.
  • Staff member said often uses Google translate on her phone to show people what she means if her English translation is good

Lessons learnt & communicated to all staff in meetings today.

  • Do not disturb students studying, do another area and return later…or report to supervisor for advice/action later
  • If you need assistance with staff or students call supervisor
  • We reminded all staff about how they could be perceived by staff & students.

I also asked Security to view CCTV and report findings.

  • Cleaner appears to be doing her job
  • No sign of chairs being forcibly moved crashing into things
  • Cleaner seen vacuuming near students….possibly noise irritation?
  •  Cleaner wearing 1 earpiece, its difficult to tell if actually talking on phone
  • Security opinion nothing out f order from staff or students.

Further to this we also asked cleaner if we could look at phone call history for the time in question….this was granted immediately , there were no calls to or from phone during this period.

I am satisfied my staff member did nothing wrong. We have had to change drastically how we clean & what we prioritise and I’m afraid in order to clean high hand fall surfaces early am other things…eg vacuuming will be carried out later in the day. This can cause some annoyance to our users but COVID is our main priority.

I hope this reassures you that every consideration has been given to your complaint and we can draw a line under this incident.

Returning books - Bedford

 You said

I have some books that have reached renewal max that I have from semester 2 last year. I haven't been able to get to campus and I intend to return all of the books that I am still using along with those books at the end of the year when I graduate.

Can someone please help me? I’m intending to come and put them in the hatch outside the library on Bedford campus on Saturday. Do you know if I will need to book a test if I am not entering any buildings?

We said

Thank you for your email. I am puzzled as to why they weren’t automatically renewed. They are renewed now. Please make sure you return all your library items when you finish. In the meantime you will need to enter via the Gateway building (there is only one entry point to the campus atm) so please remember to bring your ID

Overdue Books

 You said:

I would just like to check. My library account says I have been charged for a book, however when I collected the books I had rented, I asked the librarians about returns as I live over two hours from the campus and wasn't able to return until the end of the semester (I informed them my deadline was the 4th June so definitely not before then) and they said that would be fine. They said there wouldn't be a charge for books out at the moment because of the lockdown restrictions. I'd just like somebody to confirm this as I can now see there is a charge for the book below. I am not happy seeing that payment anyway because of the advice I was given onsite however I am also worried about that going up as I do not have the time to drive up and back before my deadline.

Thank you for your email. I have reviewed your loans and can say

All your loans (total 13 items) are due back either 13.4.21 or 24.4.21 – all are about to become Billed

The item you wrote to me about is already Billed because it was requested by another student so you were no longer able to qualify for automatic renewals and the item was due back 6.3.21

You can check your library account any time by logging in to the “Renewals sign in on the library catalogue here:

https://brum.beds.ac.uk/patroninfo

and using your usual University username and password to authenticate in.

Please can you advise who gave you the loans advice on campus (or at least date, time and where would be helpful) so training can be put in place so this doesn’t happen again.

In the mean time I have asked staff to investigate your account further and hopefully in the next few days you we see that the Bill has been lifted and all your books have be renewed.

If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact me.

I am a previous student of the university and graduated last year, I am now studying in the University of Westminster, and because of the current situation, it is difficult to travel to London to use the library for studies. I was wondering if the Uni Beds library is open and how can I have access to at least the lower level to have a quiet space to do my work.
