Billed items

From Twitter: i forgot about a book so have an overdue fine, i have a letter about book replacement but still have the book so what do i do?

Quite simply return the book. If your loans are more than 5 weeks overdue they become Billed Items. You will be issued with a replacement bill for the items you have on loan and your library account and network account will be blocked.
As soon as you return your loans the bill will be lifted and replaced with a fine. Your library and network accounts will be restored. So finally you just need to pay your fines.
All this information is on LRWeb: http://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/libraryservices/availableservices/borrowing/fines

Luton: Study environment

From Twitter: what is the point of a silent study area where people are talking?! #shutupI'm trying to study

First of all I would like to apologise for the inconvenience caused by this problem.

We take care to ensure that important matters such as this are properly managed and dealt with. It is most appropriate to speak to staff about this so they could do something about this on the spot. Overnight this would mean asking security for support.

Levels 2 & 3 of the Luton LRC are silent floors. No amount of talking is acceptable. Phone conversations are supposed to take place on the landing outside the lifts. I appreciate that when library staff are on duty you have reported noise problems directly. During staffed hours there are staff patrols approx every half hour and the area is electronically monitored for noise.

Level 2 & 3  of Luton LRC are designated Silent Study at the request of the student body. Provision is made for group and social learning elsewhere in the LRC so there is an expectation for students to choose their preferred study environment and abide by the requirements of that space. This is harder to monitor overnight as the building is patrolled by security. Any student caught breaking the Silence requirement is allowed one verbal warning after that Library sanctions come into effect. Student behaviour was a key theme at the Student Union conference November 2013. This is a university concern which is being looked at by staff, students themselves and the Student Union

Action is taken towards anyone who disregards the silence requirement. I hope this reassures you. Please tell staff directly if you experience any further problems (which I hope you don't).

Bedford - study environment

I am doing ph.d over 3 years on Bedford campus, and often study in our library. I am very pleased that the library provide silent study room this year. Except these room, to be honest, there had been no place to study due to the horrible noise.

The silent study place should be supposed to be calm for everyone. However, often some are chatting with friends and then making a noise here. Even though I warned them to be quite sometimes, they did stop talking. There must be strict role for them, for example, no permission to access this room again if they interrupt other people several times and so on. or there are an urgent need to let them know the code of conduct here. They should learn what the library is for.

I do believe that  the atmosphere of library reflects the academic quality of university. I really love and support our library's efforts such as 24hour open system and the silent room, but it would be highly appreciated to manage the silent room more strictly for those who study and research hard.
