Scanning at Park Square

Customer 1

... bring to your attention the number of times the scanner is not working ... why only one scanner?

Customer 2

.. only one scan machine and its not working ... no fax machine

Thanks for your raising your concerns. Each site of the University has a scanner in the LRC/library. At Park Square there is a scanner on level 1 and in the IT Suite. The IT Suite scanner is attached to a Mac. We are hoping to get another scanner for the IT Suite in the New Year. The level 1 scanner has had a few problems in recent weeks and is currently being repaired. This should be sorted out soon.

There never have been any student fax machines in the LRC/library. With the way communications technology is progressing this will not be reviewed.

Document Supply Form

The Student Document Supply Request Formis poorly structure in term of title space is not enough to write titles of the articles requested and author space also to enter name of the author's. The suggestion is to review the structure of the request form because I find it very difficult enter request without squashing the word in.

Thank you for your comments on our new version of our Document Supply Form. It has been pointed out that this incarnation of the form doesn't allow enough space for titles and maybe author's names so efforts will be made in the next version to improve this.
Thanks for your patience in this matter and if you need more space please write the details on the back of the form while we use up existing stocks

Laptops in Social Learning Space pods

I would like to address you from the name of my classmates who are just like me disappointed from not being able to use our laptops in the Social Learning Space rooms. That is why they are build for. We have been using them for a whole semester.
The computer that is provided is uncomfortable. You have to stand. To connect a USB. To put all files on USB. You don't have neither your saved favourite links nor anything on that pc.

Thank you for your comments regarding the use of laptops in the Social Learning Space (SLS).
I am assuming that you mean plugging the laptop into the SMART boards in the pods not using laptops in the SLS generally as SLS is wireless and therefore laptops can be used anywhere in SLS.
There was a plug in facility last year but the connection points were a little inaccessible so our equipment was getting damaged. We are investigating having a front plug in point. I will advise you when this becomes available.

Meanwhile please continue to use the pc provided. If you set up a Delicious account (its free!)and put all your favourite web links on that it will travel to any pc you use not just your laptop.
Thank you for your patience.

Butterfield Classrooms etc

Something needs to be done about the parking as there is not enough car parking space for the students. People have to park on the main roads and they will soon have yellow lines

Catering is poor no hot food available or even there is no cold food available

The rooms (classrooms) are so cold that I have to wear my jacket throughout the lesson

The tablets are so small it is hard to write my notes on the lesson. If its not my pens falling off its my pad or books

Thank you for your comments noted above. I am so sorry that you seem to be a bit disaffected with services at Butterfield at the moment. In reply:

Car parking. The LRC is not responsible for the parking at any University campus/site but I will pass your comments on to the relevant department.

CateringThe LRCs at the old Bedford Hospital and L&D Hospital sites did not offer catering facilities (although hospital catering facilities were within walking distance) and so there were no facilities to transfer when we moved to Butterfield. I understand that there is a cafe on-site and this has some catering facilities. The LRC is not responsible for catering at any University campus/site but I will pass your comments on to the relevant department.

Temperature. If you are uncomfortable because the heating fails please ensure that your lecturer or Faculty admin or LRC staff report the problem to the Helpdesk. That way the problem will get prompt attention.

Tables. The LRC isn't reponsible for kitting out the classrooms but I will pass your comments on to the relevant department.

Butterfield Parking

There is no way enough car parking spaces the students. This is a priority and needs to be looked at.

Food machines or canteen for hot food is needed

Thank you for your comments noted above. In reply

Butterfield - Catering

The catering facilities at Butterfield are lacking, the tea machine is often empty.

Butterfield Parking

The parking facilities are very poor once the gravel area is full students have to park on road. Soon yellow lines will be drawn and there will be less places to park.

Parking is something of a premium throughout the University and the problems at Butterfield are well documented. The LRC isn't responsible for parking arrangements at any campus/site but I will forward your comments to the appropriate department.

Butterfield Bus

The University is running a free shuttle bus from Luton Town Centre and train station to and from the Butterfield site daily. The buses are operated by Three Star Coaches.
The bus will depart from Vicarage Street on the Park Square campus. Vicarage Street is a 5-10 minute walk from both Luton Bus station and Rail Station. There will be a drop off and pick up point from Luton Train Station for each service. If you wish to board the shuttle bus from the train station stop you must wave for the bus to stop.
The Bus will pick up from the bus stop at the end of Station Road (turn left down the road as you come out of the main entrance to the station or turn right on to Midland Road if you come out from the back of the station )
There is also a local bus service from Park Square opposite St Mary's church behind the main campus building. Arriva bus services 100, 101 and 102 all run from the town centre to Butterfield and vice versa. Please note the Arriva busses are not free.
The confirmed University bus schedule from Monday - Friday is listed below:

Reservations / Holds

I feel that if a book has a hold on it the the person who has the book should be informed that the book is waiting for somebody else.

Thank you for your query. Any item that is reserved by another person which is out on loan when its requested, cannot be renewed. If that book becomes overdue the customer is emailed, advising them to return the book.

Mobile phone nuisance

Why don't you get a bit more strict on people talking or answering the phone in the library? If everyone knew that if their phone rings they would be banned for a year they would take great care so that it doesn't happen.

Thanks for your query. Whereas I share your frustration with mobile phone use, a year's ban is disproportionate to the offense caused. There are clear rules regarding the use of mobile phones in the Universities LRCs and library. All mobiles are supposed to be set on silent (ie no ring tones anywhere in any LRC/library) and voice conversations are only supposed to take place in designated areas. At Park Square that is the Social Learning Space and the stairwells. I would advise you to report any disturbance to security and they will take steps to stop this inconsiderate practice.

Default Printer

My print out defaulted to the colour printer. Over charging and causing a nuisance

The colour printer was the default printer at the time you sent your printing through. The dialogue box that pops up for you to confirm or change the print options would give you the opportunity to change this.
A new print system is coming into the LRCs for 2009 and that will give you the opportunity to cancel any print job - at the last minute if necessary - to avoid mistakes like this in the future.

Please read the pop ups and this should help too.

Reservation Problems

A customer from Polhill wrote to me about some problems she'd had with a reservation and someone keeping a book out on loan - thus holding up the reservations queue.

Thank you for writing to me about your concerns regarding our fines and reservations policies.
Regarding your reservation problem as I do not know the book you are after I cannot follow this up specifically but I can say:
reservation lists can run into double figures - particularly nursing titles - so the book may be working its way through a reservation list before it gets to you
if, as you seem to suggest, its another student holding up the queue by not returning the book then our fines policy will kick in. As you know we have a very low fines regime to minimise adverse financial implications for the majority of our customers. If someone keeps an item out on loan for more than 5 weeks after its due date the item is billed; the customer's library and network accounts are blocked and the customer must either return the book and pay a fine or pay for a new copy of the book. This has a very high impact on most of our customers and makes our fines regime very effective.
I am sorry you have been experiencing difficulties. If you have placed a request the first available copy will be sent to you (not necessarily Polhill's copy). If you wish to discuss this further please contact me (01582 489341) during office hours on weekdays.

What's in a name

It is very confusing having references to library/LRC. Is it not possible to call your libraries, "LRC" or "Library" and maintain a consistency in all your promotional material and web sites?

When University of Luton merged with the DMU site at Polhill we had two different cultures. UoL called its resource centres/libraries Learning Resource Centres and Polhill had a library. In an effort not to confuse or alienate any students after the merger both forms were kept. It is on the agenda for review but for now we have to cope with some rather clunky terms of description.

Carpet tiles LRC Park Square

the carpet tiles on the new lrc desk looks odd, dont match

With all the building work that's been going on this summer some carpet tiles are seeing the light of day for the first time in 10 years! Unfortunately because other tiles have faded the newly revealed tiles "look odd". I'm sure after a bit of normal customer traffic the contrast will tone down and you'll see a closer match.

Course Information

I wanted to know is there any information in website where I could find
necessary literature for my course.

The library doesn't hold that information. I will copy this email to
admissions to see if they can help. Meanwhile

Astronomy at Putteridge Bury

Who is responsible for the astronomy la at Putteridgebury?

That's an interesting question. As we don't teach astronomy at the University of Bedfordshire we do not buy astronomy materials. Any titles in stock are from discontinued course/modules.

Use

Recently I have not been able to get access to Net-mail or Internet service because I have not payed my tuition fee for 2007-2008 yet. Now that I have payed it, could you please enable me to get access to the services?

As soon as you paid off your debt your accounts were made available to you again.

Park Square LRC level 2 blinds

We've had a request for blinds on level 2 of the LRC at Park Square.

This is a reasonable request and will be investigated. There isn't a simple course of action possible ie installing blinds as that will impact on the natural light for the whole floor. Consideration will be given to re-locating the pcs to cut down the glare.

Computers

why are most computers not working when we need it the most, like when we have to hand in assignments?? and why dont we have a back up when we have a power failure at the university??

The University is currently experiencing system problems following a power cut at the weekend (17.5.08). ISD have advised us that the current problems relate to a specific part of our server cluster which deals with authentication, directory and identity services. The matter rests with ISD who are working on it.

Not meeting expectations

i think our uni LRC specially it suit is getting **** useless there arent enough facilities and space for student specially in exam term and during assignment and getting universities are charging alot for international student they should do sum extra stuff for them and provide them special other facilities isnt it

At this time of year LRC use is at its peak. It is inevitable that there will be occasions where space is difficult if not impossible to find in "favourite" areas of the LRC and IT Suite.

Please walk round the LRC! There are 300 pc places at Park Square. There are study places on all floors of the LRC. Don't be put off if the IT Suite is busy. The Library Floors and the Social Learning Space offer plenty of opportunity to find somewhere to study
