Luton Library signage

In the old library there was signs up with the book topics of each floor rather than just the numbers, this time it is just the numbers. It would be much easier for students to have the topics, especially if they wish to explore other topics and link subjects in their course. Also I could not find many up to date books within social sciences (I am doing an assignment on child trafficking).

Sign posting
The subjects used in the old library dated quickly as new terms and facets of a subject are delivered each year.
I would advise you to use a quick search on the library catalogue to start you off with a few catalogue number and then use the red signs to find your way around the floors.
Child Trafficking
Using the search term “child trafficking in the library catalogue I got 27 items 17 of which were 6 years old or less.
Using the search term“child trafficking” in DISCOVER – available on the front page of LRWeb
http://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/
I got 291,025 hits. As the majority are articles that’s a lot of very current material
There is a lot of help available on-line which I would direct you to have a look at
there is a very specific section on finding information

Referencing

I wish to inquire about the Harvard referencing.

First is on how to cite webpages. On the part where it says, 'Title of Webpage', what does it pertain to? Is it the title of the article on that webpage? Take for example the publication by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) entitled Identifying and managing clinical risks in newborn babies and providing care for infants in the community who need respiratory support. Will that be the title of the webpage? That's the only title I can see on the webpage itself.

Second, if I find a journal article online in a pdf format such that it looks exactly the same as it would on a hardcopy of a magazine, which formatting do I use? Will it be the webpage because I found it online? or the journal articles because it actually is a journal article but just in a pdf format?

Thanks for your email.

Yes you are correct the title of the webpage is the title of the article on the webpage.  So yes the CQC webpage title you have identified is correct.

I would reference a journal article in the journal article format if you have all the information you need to be able to do this, e.g. Journal title, volume number, issue numbers, page numbers.

I hope this helps  there is information on the web too

External Customers - Sconul Access

I wanted to find out more information about how I can gain access to your university library. I have read the page on your website which gives information about sconul access, however, I got a bit confused about the sconul access vacation scheme as it says it is only available between June and October. Are they two different schemes?

Can you clarify if I would be able to access your library anytime of the day and year or does it have to be a specific time period.

Thanks for your enquiry
Yes Sconul Access and Sconul Vacation scheme are two different things

Please check with University of Hertfordshire that you are eligible to apply and then proceed with your Sconul Access application

This offers access throughout library opening hours

DISCOVER

am wondering if you can help me, I am currently using discover to do some research for an assignment I am writing. When I was searching, the articles etc it brought up were irrelevant, so I inserted a couple of different words on different topics and it came up with the same results each time. Could you please tell me how to correct this or let me know when it will be corrected.

Thank you for your enquiry. There is advice and guidance on LRWeb you may find useful
http://lrweb.beds.ac.uk/digital/discover

If you want to visit the study hub on your next visit to the library staff can see how you are using DISCOVER.

Two tips come to mind:

1.       Emphasise keywords. Keywords can be emphasised by searching for them in the Title or Abstract for example.

2.       Start thinking about journal publication. Reading lists/recommendations from staff can work quite well in refining results appearing from those publications. DISCOVER has the option of refining by Publication

Luton Library - temperatures

The library is very cold, especially the silent study rooms, there seems to be no source of heating operational. This is a huge issue for me due to health issues regarding my back, leg and nervous system, having these rooms so cold is causing me pain and discomfort, yet it is the only place in the university with silent study and computer access. If there is somewhere else for people with health conditions to sit, do work and have silence please point me in the right direction?.

Thank you for taking the trouble to raise your concerns with me. Luton Library's environmental controls are set between 19 – 23 degrees centigrade and we monitor temperatures with cardboard thermometers. If temperatures fall between these parameters we can do nothing. Temperatures have not fallen outside these parameters so far!

I can offer you a cardboard thermometer so you can find study space that measures in the 20 degrees centigrade rather than 19 degrees (and of course if it dips below 19 degrees you can let us know). Please let me know and I can arrange for you to pick one up next time you are in the library.

I understand that you have not approached the Health and Well Being team so the University doesn't not have specific information on your condition to help you. May I advise you to do this at your soonest convenience?

I will also say that the recent drop in temperatures has taken some students by surprise. Perhaps you could review your wardrobe so you can adapt to the lower winter temperatures with appropriate clothing

Refworks

I want to use refworks but It is not accepting my email id what to do.

Thank you for your enquiry. I am sorry that you have been experiencing issues with Refworks you shouldn’t be logging in with your email ids, it’s a Shibboleth login.

Have you been using the information on LRWeb? I think you’ll find it very helpful

Luton Library

I have taken out a loan laptop several times from the library, however each time I have not been prompted for alogin which made it difficult for me to print documents off, I then had to speak to one of the librarians for them to try and help me, it needs to be made more clear about login into these laptops, for the purpose of printing and saving documents if needed. I am also particularly concerned with the noise levels within the library and I am finding it difficult to study as many people come here to socialise instead of study, people who are not studying should either be prompted to keep the noise down or leave.

Thank you for your enquiry. I will break it down into section to ensure I answer each of your concerns

Laptops: If you do not get a log on prompt it means that the person who used the laptop before you did not log off correctly. If this happens again please switch the laptop off completely and start again. Some trouble shooting tips are being drafted and this will be included in the advice.

Study environment: Luton Library offers a huge range of study environments with the more social floors being 1, 2 and 3. If you like using these floors I am afraid that you will have to expect more conversation than you would like. Silent study rooms are available on levels 4, 5 and 6 and I would advise you to study there
